God Help Me, I Kind of Want the Vong

By Greatfrito, in Star Wars: Armada

So, due to discussion of "Can theme ever be a reason for rules changes on its own" in another thread, I got to thinking about all of the stupid things Star Wars has in the whole of the EU, and how really, there's almost always some justification for any random dumb thing somewhere in the Star Wars universe.

Which got me to thinking about the Yuuzhan Vong, and how stupid that was.

... And god help me, I kind of think they'd actually be interesting in Armada. Mechanically at least. Visually.

Thematically, god, no, just... well, except they're just as "thematic" as "lifeboat" commanders (maybe moreso, since we actually see them ever in Star Wars fiction).

Thankfully, though, they've been burned from the canon (and were loathed regardless), so it's at most a pipedream.

Correction - ... at most a "PipeNIGHTMARE".

It would be neat, but didn't their weapons just go through shields and straight to hull? And their fighters were obnoxious I thought. Shooting lava or some crazy stuff.

I think it would be cool but very hard to balance.

World ships though.

If there is one thing I love about the EU being nuked by Mickey Mouse is that the Vong are gone. Jesus it was dumb. Also lets be real the old EU had some really cool stuff but most of it was a steaming garbage of contradiction and subpar writing.

I did enjoy how Chewbacca died though. Getting crushed by a moon is an epic way to go.

(pokes head out of coral skipper)

ummm...I kind of liked the NJO series...

It wasn't that their weapons go through shields, but they had some gravity tricks that made the shields of the ships and fighters go down.

I was also thinking how it would be for the Vong to appear on Armada, but I don't know, it could be weird :P

That's what it was. I don't think it would happen since Disney already rewrote the canon, and I think FFG wouldn't be allowed to reach that far into the EU.

I'm a minority here, but I actually kind of liked the Vong for the first 5-6 books of the NJO series. Then the writing got bad. But man, Salvatore and Stackpole led that series in amazingly.

They're not canon now, but who know what could happen in the next season of Rebels...

(Answer: Not this. We all know at least that much.)

Well they are doing the FO and Resistance for the movies, so I'd assume FFG would pull from there.

I'd love to see Vong, but we are dreamers.

I think a lot is just that it happened during "the time". I was 15 when the series came out and it just hit me at the right time and the right place to make me care about it. And I was coming off a Stackpole high with the X-wing books. I got pretty tired of the series around Star by Star.

But as an adult, I went back and read Vector Prime and Dark Tide I and II and I still feel they are solid. Vector Prime feels so weird, but its a good weird.

Its just I hate them so much is all. Also they aren't cannon anymore. But I would probably play them if they were fun and they looked cool.

Haha, fair enough. We'll never see them that's for sure, but Armada has it's share on non-canon already. Not as crazy as the Vong though.

Mel has a bunch of 'vong if you're wanting to - at least, visually - give them a good look over.

I stopped readin EU around the Jedi Academy series because I thought Kevin J Anderson was a poor writer, and then I never came back to it. So, I have a vague idea who the Vong were, but why so hated?

I'm just being lazy here and don't want to read shite books just to find out.

Love or hate them, they make a pretty well-fleshed out third faction. In my opinion better than scum or Zann consortium.

They would make for a reasonable and believable 3rd faction. That said, please, please no.

We could, but...

(Imagine if we didn't)

I hope we don't see them. Though if we do I hope they are fairly well balanced.

100%. I mean the Sun Crusher? really? Every man and his dog becoming a Jedi. Clones of every bad guy you can imagine. Lukes good, lukes bad, lukes good again. Oh wait, he's bad again. Now Lukes great grandnewphew or whatever is bad. Also he's a space pirate. Soontir Fel's kid is now the Emperor too. Jesus.

But then we did get some gold, the X-Wing series was pretty good for it's time. The Imperial Knights were well thought out I think. and Thrawn. The Han Solo trilogy was good I recall aswell, but I read that when I was 14.

I actually liked the YV, and thematically they're the best candidate in the Legends EU for a third faction. The problem is, they've never had any screen time, and only pretty fringe comic book appearances at all as far as I'm aware (could be wrong here, not really into comics), so their visual aesthetic is pretty far removed from the Star Wars that anybody knows. Nobody sees a YV ship and associates it with X-wings and Star Destroyers.

I'm pretty sure we'll never see this become a thing, but I personally would love it.

Serious, I think the Legacy Comic Series was pretty darn good. The Imperial Knights were awesome, and the main character was actually pretty developed. I enjoyed the idea of the dark side being used to heal. I have the entire collection in my closet. Edit: Krayt was also a pretty cool Sith Lord, and you knows how I feel about my Twileks, Darth Talon.

I think it says something, but I think most fondly of the parts of the old EU that were furthest from Lucas. Legacy (140 or so years into the future) and The Old Republic (3000-4000 years into the past). I wish the new canon would stray farther away.

Kevin J Anderson is largely considered to be one of the worst Star Wars writers. Fun enough, he later went on to ruin Dune too.

As I said, I am in the minority that actually kind of liked the Vong themselves, but I fully admit the Vong series got pretty terrible.

I for one want the Battlestar Galactica (or the Star Wars equivalent) in Armada. Speed 2. 1 black die armament on all sides. No shields. ...and about 4 black dice anti-squad.

On a serious note, I want to see the CIS in Armada. I also get that it has the same mixed reaction as YV. Personally, the YV just never stuck for me. I couldn't get into them
