Newbie's Worlds Questions

By ScummyRebel, in X-Wing Organized Play

From the article I saw, it looks like Worlds is open to any player, as long as they can fit into the limited capacity. Do you need any other tournament experience or awards as a physical requirement to get in the door?

My second question is, since the pricing didn't seem to be up yet, what was entry last year?

I'm asking because while new-ish to Xwing, I am just starting to get to the point where I actually have enough of the physical cards to make some of the typical competitive lists. I also have the good fortune of being within a normal drive to FFGC such that there is literally zero travel burden on me to go. I am considering the experience and playing in the Swiss rounds to learn and do my best. I have no delusions of making it past the Swiss rounds, but if I do that's just a bonus.

Based on the cost of the event, knowing that my only real cost is entry, is it a worthwhile experience? Or should I I stay away until I've gone to some Regionals (I would have gone to the Regional last weekend, except for I have never followed competitive Xwing and found about it with no time to plan for going) first?

I don't want to be a bother to the people that are seriously there to win (in terms of rules/timing I won't be). I'm just curious if the bottom half of Worlds is an acceptable place for a player like myself.

You don't "need" any other tournament experience or awards. But you might annoy your opponents if you don't have enough experience to know how to play the game or if you are playing in your first ever tournament. I'd recommend attending at least a few local tournaments first. To quote the tournament regulations description of a premier event "Premier events are the highest level of competition for Fantasy Flight Games tournaments. At this top level of tournaments, players are expected to have a moderate amount of experience. Players should be familiar with not only the game rules, but also the FAQ and tournament regulations. The focus is on a competitive and fair environment."

I think the pricing last year was $75. Registration is online and sells out within minutes.

There are plenty of non elite players who attend Worlds, so I wouldn't let that stop you.

I feel as if I have a solid handle on the rules, timing, and FAQ. I wouldn't need any help of that nature. However, I will probably not go in case of any tournament specific policy that could offend if I'm not overly used to it.

Thanks for the feedback.
