US Nationals is at the NoVA Open

NOVA is a pretty good gaming convention. it has had its ups and downs but really goes all out for its events. They made full size star destroyers (TO SCALE) for some of the X-wing events last year. Just as a warning, it is in an expensive(ish) area but they usually have food trucks come by for lunch but plan accordingly. For those who want cheaper accommodations, you could metro in from hotels a bit further out. There are also A LOT of us that live in the area that would be willing to help out with suggestions.

Ok, so the timing seems odd to me.... Regional events get you a bye to Nationals. That's in the article. Regionals for this season are Nov-Feb. Worlds is in May. So, do you get to use your Regional bye for the current regional season (going on now) after Worlds in May, for next season's Nationals? Correct me if I'm wrong here, or looking at this wrong.

Timeline of events

Nov 16-Feb17 (Regionals)------- May 4-7 (Worlds) --------May-August (Store Championships)-------- Aug 17-20 (NA Champs at Gencon?????) -----Aug 31- Sep 3 (US Nationals)---------- Nov-Feb (Regionals)-----------May (Worlds)

Please, someone, show me where I'm wrong here. Is there going to be a very short Store Championship season and Regional season for the Nationals 31 Aug - 3 Sep, cuz that leaves a ton of time between then and worlds in may......

Yea thats the time line, this year is the wonky year with the switch.

Nationals Look to be rotating around the country so that people get a chance to go from different areas.

The NA and Nationals do look a bit close for comfort I agree.

Yeah the byes thing is all messed up now as they reorganise the year. You've had Regionals with no Store Champs to earn byes from, then Worlds with no Nationals to earn byes from.

Everything is out of order. I expect they'll just pull the byes from the prize pool as they no longer make sense.

It's wonky going forward beyond just this year anyways. It was much better beforehand (and made more sense too from a travel perspective).

Old:

Jan->March Store Champs

April->June Regionals

June->August Nationals (and Gencon's North American Champs in August)

Nov Worlds

Future:

May->August Store Champs

August Gencon's North American Champs

Dec->Feb Regionals

May Worlds

Whenever the frack they want Nationals

There is no more escalation building up from SCs -> Regs -> Nats -> Worlds. It's just all over the place now.

Ok, so next year, then, how will they make it "right" by having Nationals after Regionals in the current season, or is this going to be the new norm?

That's the new norm. Note that I didn't put this year's transitional schedule since it's even more F'd up. Really going forward it's SC -> Regionals -> Worlds, with Nationals and Continentals sprinkled wherever.

So looks like a $40 Convention Pass + $35 Tournament Fee is required.

6-Round Swiss 128 players on Friday and Saturday and then Top 32 Elimination rounds on Sunday.

YUP, defo expensive. But their swag bags are top notch from my recollection.

Was this usually at gencon?

Comparable to European Champs cost, maybe a bit less. Depends what Trump and Brexit do the exchange rates by then

There's US Nationals and then North American Nationals (both of which are in the US so . . . yeah). One is usually at GenCon, the other is somewhere else.

I've gotta say, though, putting Nationals at the NOVA Open was a good move as far as I'm concerned. Those guys have always had it together when it comes to X-WIng.

Good that Yavin is separate event. I think I skip Euro tho.

So is FFG doing anything at Origins this year?? I though they had a 3 year contract with them. Trying to remember the post from last year.

Odd that registration opens in February, but FFG hasn't opened registration for Worlds in May (unless I missed it already).

The convention determines the registration date. FFG runs Worlds so they choose the registration date.

Got my ticket. Held my breath for a second there when the site crashed. Thought we were going to have a worlds fiasco all over again.

Yeah, I entered too (have a bye for IA, so decided to make the Nationals trek).

Pretty pricey entry, though.

It's more than worth the money, even before it was a Nationals level event.

I have my ticket for X-Wing and IA so see you there!

I'll hold you to that! I registered for Armada, X-Wing, IA, and the Pirate event, so a full weekend will be had.

This will be my first Nova. Grabbed Destiny and X-Wing Heat 2 -- will try to also register for Heat 1 at the con, if I don't do well with Destiny.

Pretty excited! Anyone have any insight on what goes on @ Nova outside of the paid for event listings? Are the vendors and the like?

I'll be there, but not for X-Wing Nationals. I'm doing the Epic Furball tournament for X-Wing.
