Annoying X-Wings

By Pumpkyre, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been trying to find a way to play triple X-wings without any regen, partly because one of my frequent oponent dislikes regen ships and partly to take up the challenge. So I tried to find another ways to ensure some survivability of my ships, mainly through dice modification or maneuverability:

Poe Dameron (33)

Ptl (3)

BB-8 (2)

Primed Thrusters (1)

Autothrusters (2)

Black One (1)

- An attempt to build X-wing arc dodger. PS9, good action economy, not great dial though. Primed thrusters are there to allow him to use BB-8 and boost regardless of his stress level, which should synergize well with Black One title. He is pretty costly and I'm not sure if he can keep his weight, but maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Jess Pava (25)

M9-G8 (3)

IA (0)

- Jess Pava with M9 is the hex ship, at first providing rerolls to her comrades, then hopefully reducing the punishment coming from enemy ships. Tried her in Epic play and she was terror. Less ships now to fuel her ability though.

Tarn Mison (23)

R7 astromech (2)

IA (0)

Plasma Torpedoes (3)

- I chose Tarn to be somewhat annoying third ship. Forcing one-time rerolls and threatening anyone who targets him with retaliatory strike by torpedoes. Also, same PS as Jess to provide some flexibility. Heavily depending on how good my opponent can roll, but that's the risk for both me and him.

Total: 98 points

- I like having initiative bid, even for just placing the first asteroid if PS does not matter. So while I can for example give Jess PA, I don't think she really needs it.

What do you think? I know that regen Poe would probably be more reliable (if not straight better) choice, but I tried to avoid regen if I could. Any feedback would be appreciated.

M9-G8 has a fairly strong synergy with Tarn.

I don't know, Regen is what makes the rebels able to stay alive. I say play what you want because I've played 3 x-wings before and got stomped on. I hate playing against a lot of other stuff but I'm not going to dictate what my opponent plays, and when you beat something that you thought impossible, it's even better.

If your aren't going to use regen, at least use Biggs.

This. Regen makes xwings and ewings at least semi-viable and regen is rebels unique mechanic. If you dont want regen, i say go for 2, rookies wes and biggs with cheap astros and integrated and try to joust.

I would start with Biggs and Jess and go from there. Ideally with Rookies or Novices. Jess likes more friends.

I would also think about a BB8 Luke. He doesn't get flown much but without regen his built in defensive mods will help. BB8 to give him some re-positioning. Or vectored thrusters. Without regen, I also think that Int. Ast. becomes mandatory over AT but I don't have the math to back that up.

Tried the list today against Palp Defenders and lost, though it was close. Some observations:

1) Tarn and Jess are more fragile than I thought, especially Tarn. He got shot down in one combat phase despite R7 and IA. Flew him before and it was similar, but I thought I was just a bit unlucky. R7 is probably too unreliable for my taste.

2) Jess was great, especially as M9-G8 carrier, but she needs more sidekicks.

3) I was pleasantly surprised with that Poe build. Very slippery with solid damage output, but with weaker defense that R5-P9 version. Primed thrusters with BB-8 are also nice, plus the ability to strip 2 target locks from friendly ships may sometimes help. Definitely the ship I'll try again, though with different escort. Red ace comes in mind, to add some needed durability.

Overall, the list was really fun, but seemed too fragile. Your feedback was definitely on point, without regen every hit my fighters suffered counted. So I welcomed back regen bots, they were deeply missed.

Once again, thank you much for your suggestions.

This. This so much! I've flown him with Rey in a two ship build, and it was powerful and fun. I still lost sometimes, but I enjoyed it. I like flying this Poe with Jess and another T-70 ace, either Snap Wexley, Nien Nunb, or Ello Asty. So much X-wing!

+1!

I play this kind of Poe (I only prefere AI to AT) often and love it! And yes, it's a perfect partner for Rey/Finn.
