Large Base Explosions

By Milienius, in Star Wars: Armada

So this was a thought that came to me and was inspired by a post I saw in another thread.

When a large base ship is destroyed roll 1 red dice. If the side shows *hit* *hit* then the ship's hyperdrive goes critical and explodes dealing [X Damage] to all ships and squadrons within [Y Range].

Or at least something along those lines. It might give a ramming fleet pause and I think it could potentially add some interesting flavor to matches involving larger ships. Thoughts?

Are ramming fleets dominating your local meta? I guess I just don't understand the issue since I don't see many ramming fleets do well, so I don't think a nerf is needed. Just curious if your experience is different.

No ramming fleets aren't really a thing in my area. It prolly would give them pause but this is more so a flavor thing I though of. It's not really meant to fix anything or address some sort of issue. It is just supposed to be a potentially fun (or rage inducing) addition.

Maybe as a 1pt upgrade that triggers with any hit rolled instead? 'Scuttling Charges' or something?

Excuse, have you heard of the HMS Hood sunk by the Bismarck? (I think.)

DETONATIONS

I thought it might be fun to replace every destroyed ship with a rectangular debris field the size of it's base. Even thought about being crazy with photoshop and making every field match a ship in my collection.

have them continue to drift straight at their last set speed as moving debris clouds until the leave the board

We have this already, it's called Cluster Bombs.

And we see how much those are used.....

I see larger dead starship's more as gutted/burning hulks rather than vast explosions.....

whereas the smaller ships would most likely disintigrate under an overwhelming torrent of fire.

Well again I think the point of this would be that it only happens to large bases and their is a chance element involved in it. The ship could just end up disabled or a hulk but if you connect with the right subsystems or caches then the thing could go down in an explosion. Making it an upgrade card on such low odds is just a waste of a slot. I think it would be more interesting to make it natural to large bases. I do like the idea about debris fields though.

I think this would be better suited as a crit, or a modification on the crits. If FFG had given a class to each crit, like the Crew one but for Engines, this could be a neat way to add this in the game. So if the ISD has an Engine crit, when it is destroyed, roll 1 red and on a double hit, roll 3 blacks against all enemy and friendly ships at range 1. Damage dealt this way cannot be altered in anyway.

So you have a very low chance of this happening. Need to get an Engine crit and then get the 12.5% roll. Great fun for house rules.

I am a huge fan of stackpoling in battletech and would be okay with a mechanic for the ships. Most ships in SW break up and don't just explode. So a debris/dust field left over for those that don't would be fun too. I am not advocating we do this as a normal tourney rule. Just as a fun house rule fof goofy games.

Then again, I play STAW and build a suicide ship that threw 40 dice over several deaths in one game round. Absolutely not viable to win, but fun.

As someone who plays Dropfleet Commander and LOVES when things explode. . . lets not do this? For fun, at home sure but lets not teach it to the new players because they might confuse it for an actual rule.

I've won three games by ramming an ISD or VSD with a CR90 who have already sustained damage. This would simultaneously prevent that but also take some of the fun away :D :P

I am a huge fan of stackpoling in battletech

And that is the reason why I absolutely Hate it.

Partly because I hate the effect itself. Partly because he - in literature - shat all over pre-established Rules and Fluff in doing so.

We do that as house rule here, destroy a ship, place a debris field.

Then again, engineering and battletech go together like nuts and gum.

I am a test engineer with a physics background. I find it (stackpoling) painfully stupid and a highly amusing game mechanics. Probably because it is so stupid.

Then again, engineering and battletech go together like nuts and gum.

You see, I have no Engineering Background (just Uni Physics working towards Aeronautics)... But essentially, my complaint has nothing to do with how "realistic" it was...

It boils down to, essentially:

- The In-Game Rules say that *THIS CANNOT HAPPEN*.

- The In-Game and Out-of-Game Background, Story and "Fluff" say that *THIS CANNOT HAPPEN*.

And then he came along and suddenly, its happening, LEFT, RIGHT AND CENTER.

It was his casual disregard for those who came before him, that soured me.

oooooh there is a good way to do it. I like.

Your take is totally valid. I didn't get into battletech until the late 90s when stackpoling already existed.

Though, to nitpick. Stackpoling only occurred center at the time. XL engines made them happen left and right.

HA! :D
