Epic tournament list with CR-90. What do you guys think?

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey guys,

I have a thread running discussing my tournament build but thought I'd put it here. A couple of caveats: The tournament rules requires 3 epic points (so for me its a CR-90, or 2 GR-75s)

I'm concerned that this list is pretty vulnerable to massed fighters.

I think it looks pretty decent. Try it out and see how it performs.

And all epic lists can be destroyed by the wrong matchups. Since all your lists need 3 epic points, no-one can spam horrendous numbers of fighters. One of the closest lists to that would be eg 2 Gozantis plus 8 Tie Interceptors - you can make each Goz 50pts, and Royal Guard Interceptors are 22 pts, leaving them 3 pts of upgrades each such as Predator, or Autothrusters + VI (PS8). Your CR90 will do more damage than 2 Gozantis, and you have 6 other ships to tackle the rest.

You could get more Tie Fighters, but I think that 300pt rules limit you to a max of 8 of the same small ship type?

I like your cr90 build, good punch at a distance. I don't like your 5 small bases and 1 large base. Just as example with a minimum epic ship investment of 80 points (2 naked Gozanti cruisers) an Imperial player could fit in 220 points worth of fighters. 12 academy ties is only 144 points, 11 with rage youngster would be 148 which would leave 70 points to add more fighters and upgrade the epic ships. I don't think your squad could withstand that many (supported) enemy fighters. You could improve your chances with just a few unique pilots dropping down to generic and having more of them. I mean by all means bring Biggs, if your epic ship carries an EM emitter he will be disgusting to deal with. A neat trick rebels have for their cr90 is to bring Roark in the hwk, putting a corvette at ps 12 to shoot every turn is awesome. Other than those specific named pilots just consider what their effects really bring to a game with so many more ships than usual. Survivability pilots from standard play don't shine so brightly when it is 300 points of ships shooting instead of 100. Good luck with your tournament.

I usually prefer to have Single Turbolasers on the fore section to overlap with the primary weapon so I can focus fire on a single target. If it looks like they're coming into range, bank away to present the aft arc, equipped with Quad Laser Turrets. Or, if you think they're gutsy, turn towards them for a chance to overlap.

But the squad seems good. I love Assault Missiles + Crackshot on that A-wing. As stated above, since everybody is bringing huge ships, you ought to do well.

I've tweaked the list a bit, thinking about the roles of the capital ship and the fighter screen:

The CR-90 build here (same as above) is an anti-capital ship ship. The escort is anti-fighter/space superiority.

Jess Pava and the Assault missile GSPs should do the heavy lifting. Tarn puts a TL on the CR-90 to give it at least 1 re-roll, then when he becomes a target can make his attacker re-roll. The 2 other GSPs are to set up kill boxes and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Biggs does Biggs stuff.

Meanwhile the CR-90 lights up enemy ships from a distance.

Ok a little tweaking:

Now I've dropped the quads on the aft in favor of the ion cannon to have some ion control. I've also added a stress X for some stress control, dropped one of the GSP with assault missiles to make room. Still I have 7 escorts and a pretty stripped down CR-90.

I'm wondering what would happen if I'm faced with Onyx Squadron /7 spam.

Any thoughts guys?

+1 for Swarm Leader Jess Pava. Brilliant!

I'm not sure how much a single Assault Missiles is going to do, so I'm wondering if you might want to drop that and put Ion Torpedoes on one of your X-wings. That saves you 2 points if you put Chardaan Refit on the GSP. Now you have three possible ships to Evade and power Jess. So cool!

Thanks Parakitor.

I dropped down the assault missle GSP to another trick/snap shot and gave Hobbie the ion torpedo. I like that combo a bit better. It goes off earlier (ps5) and will leave its target ioned and stressed. He can fire that off fully modded with a TL and a focus from the comms booster.

I only wonder if I should now drop one of the GSP down to a prototype in order to find points for another ion torp.

Jess should be able to get off a couple of turns of 5-6 dice attacks with rerolls and focus. I hope that would be enough to take down a /7 or two.
