New Player

By Rozy, in Strategy and deck-building

Hi,

I am considering of buying some boxes to start the game. I am planning to play mostly with my girlfriend home.

Can you recommend what sets should I get to have a good experience and to pay the least amount.

I am not planning to build several decks, but I want it to be fun and not the same all the time.

Welcome! Here's a resource you might find helpful:

New Player Buying Guide

Thanks. That is very complex guide. I was more thinking in sense of buying Core Set + one or two Deluxe expansions.

Do you think I would be able to enjoy the game with just Core Set + Khazad-Dum + Heirs of Numenor?

I do not want to invest too much into single packs to get as much from the Deluxe expansions as I can and keep the costs low.

Well, I can't speak to the type of gamer you are, but I can say that I enjoyed playing with just the Core Set, as well as at every point from then on, buying every pack as it came out. So I think it's possible for a person to enjoy the game with any subset of it. But to address your specific question, Heirs of Numenor is known to be a very challenging box, and you will likely face trouble with it if you are working with a small card pool. Khazad Dum is more friendly.

Unless you're trying to bundle stuff to get free shipping, why not just get the Core Set first to see if you like the game?

So I just bought core set and I am thinking of buying the Dwarf deluxe box and maybe 3 APs based on my budget currently.

Can you recommend some decks I can build? I want at least 2 strong-ish decks for me and my girl. I am thinking Drawf deck should be pretty easy to build, but what next?

If you want to build a Dwarf deck, then the Return to Mirkwood AP is a no-brainer.

After that, if you are not going to buy in order and are just going to buy a couple APs, I recommend Foundations of Stone and Shadow and Flame (both of which require the Khazad-dum box in order to play the quests). But be warned, you'll be spoiling yourself. Don't expect all the APs to have such high power level of player cards.

That buying guide on TFTC is really a great start point....i started buying in last year in "order of release" but sort of wish i had not been such a slave to my "completist" tendencies and just bought what appealed to me in terms of LOTR lore (like i dig Silvan stuff way more than Dwarves)

Searching out stuff on ebay and BGG marketplace has been a good way for me to find people dumping large amounts of cards for way below the retail price.

also check out Seastan's "Minimum Purchase" play-throughs on YouTube to get an idea of what can be done with a 1 core set and some expansions. the guy is a total genius. here's one of the videos:

The coreset is mostly Unisphere decks, but on ringsDB I rarely see those. Is it better to build TriSphere decks even if I do not have lot of cards?

If you're very careful you can, but when you're just starting to learn the game it's better to not have to concern yourself with sphere-matching and what not. Once you're comfortable with the rules of the game, you can start experimenting with deck construction.

duel sphere can work very well out of the core - especially Leadership/Spirit since you can use Leadership Aragorn and Celebrain's Stone to give him the Spirit resource icon.

Ok thanks, I am looking for options since I only have coreset now, but I am planning to buys some AP from the first two cycles and possibly Khazad Dum.

I do not think I will be able to make a theme deck, but I was thinking it might work a bit. Doing something like Leadership/Tactics Dwarf deck.

I'm a pretty casual, and relatively new player. Been out for a while, but my partner and I are playing progressively. We both play duel sphere decks and it's pretty great. Cannot recommend Khazad-dum enough. The quests aren't nightmares and the cards seem pretty good adding to your core cards.

Last comment: Foundations of Stone and the Steward's Fear are among the two best adventure packs. The player cards alone are worth it for new players, even if you don't buy the accompanying deluxe expansion and can't yet play the quests. The first has spirit Glorfindel and the second has the Outlands set. These two sets can help up the fun factor for new players or those they're teaching (like your girlfriend). Their power makes quests less frustrating for new players.

Thanks, I also have question about playing with more than 2 players. I think in the coreset rules it says I need 2 coresets to play with up to 4 players. Why is that? There are 4 decks in coreset...does not seem like there is not enough cards.

One Core Set only has two threat trackers. It's also possible you might run out of tokens. Of course both threat and the three things tracked with tokens can potentially be tracked in other ways. An additional point I would make though is that the Core 'starter decks' are not very good decks.
