L5R Rumors

By Emerych, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hi,

is quite strange until now no rumors for game rules or what else about the L5R LCG.

August is not a so long time for upcoming news......

Problems with the game test or marketing for great expectations ?

Not strange at all. Too soon for previews yet. Normally game wouldn't even be announced yet.

All we know is as follows:

1) Steve Horvath, the vice president of Organized Play at FFG and a former brand manager of Legend of the Five Rings while it was owned by Wizards of the Coast, was involved personally in the sale of the L5R IP.

2) The L5R LCG is slated for release at GenCon 2017. It is anticipated this will consist solely of the Core Set, similar to A Game of Thrones in 2016.

3) Some artists have begun to release art from the unreleased expansions AEG produced. This is a sign that either A) FFG is not continuing their contract or B) they are choosing not to pursue an art contract with FFG.

4) There have been several major leaks of the old AEG CCG cards for the unreleased expansions, but they have all been removed very aggressively and quickly.

5) Organized Play and an Interactive Storyline WILL BE part of the L5R LCG brand (confirmed: InFlight Report, GenCon 2016). The form it will take is unknown at this time.

6) There will be a World Championship for L5R LCG in November of 2017 (confirmed: InFlight Report, GenCon 2016).

That is literally all we know. I would avoid any speculation on this board, as it belongs to FFG and they would likely take steps against any leakers.

3a) Also FFG used images from unreleased AEG expansions only in their articles (none of completely new arts).

Thanks !

Oh no! I hope it does not include my faves! Which artists?

Oh no! The posts include ALL of my fave artists! Was it really confirmed that they're not doing any art for L5R LCG anymore? I mean, there were previous artwork releases but they still eventually found their way to card form... :o

All the best ones. Hopefully there are some good new artists to make favorites, but the art direction under Adrian Burton in the waning years of L5R 1.0 was truly fantastic.

I would imagine a lot of the art from the time that L5R was owned by Wizards is still owned by Wizards. This could mean imagery from cards created from 1997 and 2000 may not be available for FFG to reuse in the LCG.

4) There have been several major leaks of the old AEG CCG cards for the unreleased expansions, but they have all been removed very aggressively and quickly.

I would agree with aggressively, but maybe not quickly. they were on the fan forums for like, two weeks before some knucklehead posted about them on facebook and they got yanked down.

You're talking about incomplete text leak. TBS visual spoiler was maybe for 1 day on FB?

I wonder if there were storyline agreements included in the turnover...

Yes, the agreement was "FFG gets to do whatever they feel like because it's theirs now."

Given the dearth of new information, even articles like this are welcome.

Released at Gencon in August - wider release will probably be November.

So articles will probably start around May time - that would follow the pattern for Thrones 2.0

Definitely a fair assumption.

i know, intellectually, that theres probably no need to jam myself into that gencon day one vendor floor horde and then dash straight to the FFG booth. they're going to have more than enough copies to sell on more than the first hour of the first day.

but i'm still going to do it.

Sparks, you glorious bastard.

Sadly, no really new details in there that I can find.

Nice to know that even Geek and Sundry has the game on the radar.

As far as news goes, you guys know where to find the most up-to-date news for the game (besides FFG) right? *shameless plug*

I've been speaking to FFG about content as they get ready for the rollout.

I wonder if there were storyline agreements included in the turnover...

As I understand it, FFG is both broadly aware at how popular the storyline element of the game is, and specifically aware of outstanding story prizes at the time of the sale. AEG also had some Kotei storyline tournaments that followed the sale announcement.

That said, we don't know anything else about the storyline -- literally. FFG has not announced any elements either way. We don't know if Onyx story is going forward, and if so, whether it'll continue with AEG's original template. We don't know if it'll be a year later or five hundred years before. We don't know if there will be retcons or a reboot. We don't know how many clans there will be in the final product.

We can make some relatively safe guesses (i.e. AEG already had the art slush for Onyx Edition, so FFG's likely going to use it), and we know some areas that are going to be controversial no matter what (like the contentious Kotei season, which leaves FFG choosing between negating player victories or keeping clan themes in-clan).

We shouldn't make any assumptions, however.

With regards to the art in particular, it's possible that the contracts the artists had with AEG have simply expired. It was pretty common in the early years of L5R to get spoilers when artists posted the commissioned art before a set's list was released.

I really hope they scrap all that Onyx storyline garbage. If AEG hadn't sold the game, I probably would have quit come Onyx. (I would have given it a chance, but nothing I was hearing about it was making me very optimistic.)

wnCwcC2.png ≠ ONYX

I see your point here. But, there were nice Moshi and Tsurushi senseis incoming. ;) And honestly, technically speaking Onyx Naga design, was much fun and inspiring than anything from Mantis since Lotus, haha.
