Duchess, how you feeling him?

By Darkcloak, in X-Wing

If English isn't your first language "duchess" is the feminine of "duke", so she. If English is your first language... well "duchess" is the feminine of "duke".

Definitely still a he. Reference post 2

I'm not sure anyone is quite mad enough to have picked up 5 to do that. I maxed at 3. I'm not making the same mistake I made with the TAP; just because you can swarm 5 of them, doesn't mean you should buy 5 at launch.

"However, since there are times you might prefer not to have "Duchess" race forward at speed "1" before executing her maneuver, you can allow her to ignore the ability of her Adaptive Ailerons. Effectively, she can execute her maneuver, then, from any of four different positions, rather than from three different positions, and she can better react to fighters that buzz about her in close quarters."

Pretty sure they've made their point.

The preview articles always have errors in them. You just found one. It's a little game that FFG likes to play.

Frank Brooks would know if "Duchess" is male. At about 22:35 in this interview Frank confirms it.

Check and mate.

I pop an extra hull on Duchess and shield on Sabacc, rather than lighten frame. Add in the ability to arc dodge and one of the three named pilots makes it to the end game. I've found it is better than relying on those fickle green dice.

I run four Strikers and so far have won three, drawn one. All timed games. No tlts encountered though.

There was an interview with the Devs where Duchess was specifically referred to in the masculine form.

Oh and I'm answer to the OP's title - only where there's been prior consent....

How about we agree not to derail every TIE Striker topic with the same sh*tty Archer joke?

I think we should all support Duchess in this difficult period of transition.

Considering we never actually "see" Duchess all we have to go on regarding whether it is male or female is the word of the developer. And as others have said they may be saying "Duchess" is a male as a joke.

I don't particularly care, but the name is feminine, and a female pilot is depicted on a Striker specific upgrade card (that just so happens to correspond with Duchess's ability) therefore, I am referring to Duchess as a she.

Likewise. Assuming otherwise requires far more of a leap of logic in the direction of this (becoming increasingly tiresome) Archer reference, and the use of 'he' in the oft-quoted interview is far more likely to be a mistake than confirmation of this 'joke' - I hear people calling obviously female pilots (Like Miranda, Jess Pava, or Ryad) 'he' all the time, simply because the person is concentrating on the game rather than the fluff at that given moment.

If people want to run with the 'joke', then that is up to them - but assuming the developers are also in on it is wishful thinking at best, and the stronger evidence ('Duchess' as a female pronoun, female pilot in AA card art) supports Duchess the Striker pilot being female.

The last thing we need is X-Wing 'memes' like this - please let us maintain a bit more dignity than that as a community.

Because grown adults pushing tiny plastic space ships around on a table need to be as dignified as possible. Got it.

Duchess with VI, AA, and Lightweight Frame is a very solid 26 points. She's not got the strongest attack with just a focus for modification, but she's excellent for arc dodging and in particular diving into range 1 donut holes of TLTs and the like. I ran her alongside Quickdraw and Backdraft packing Homing Missiles at our last local tournament, and they did solid work as a list.

All of the TIE Strikers benefit from not being the most dangerous thing in your list. They're quite easy to focus down even with Lightweight Frame, but they can be an excellent thorn in your opponent's side if they need to focus on other things first.

I greatly enjoy predator Duchess and intend to stick that 28 point ship into many squads. I also enjoyed VI Sabacc and find they make an awesome 53 point tag team. Expertise Tractor/D Rexler Brath with an engine upgrade made a fun squad.

"enjoy predator"

Predator doesn't do anything but give you rerolls, I struggle to see how it makes a difference to the feel of a ship.

Reliable damage output, more confidence to Evade/Barrel and still get some hits. Absolutely you can enjoy it.

How about we agree not to derail every TIE Striker topic with the same sh*tty Archer joke?

How about we find your lost funny bone then get Mr grumpy a juice box, would you like that?

You're right sorry. The first 14 times I saw the sh*tty Archer joke it was literally the funniest thing I'd ever seen and caused me to pass out from hyperventilating with hilarity.

This is the fifteenth time, though. I'm over it now.

Better get used to it and not let it ruffle you up, because you are never not going to hear Archer "Duchess" referred to as "he."

This thread wasn't derailed by someone making a sh*tty Archer reference. It was derailed by people insistent on correcting the OP for referring to 'Duchess' as a he.

And they all want to win the cup, god forbid.

I think that's actually "Pure Sabacc" pictured on that card. Her nickname comes from a number of run-ins that she had with gambler and suspected smuggler Lando Calrissian. In an attempt to charm his way through an Imperial entaglement, he told her "Seeing you is as sweet as seeing that I'm holding Pure Sabbac". Squadmates who overheard this have never let her live down the incident and the nickname "Pure Sabacc" has stuck with her ever since.

Because grown adults pushing tiny plastic space ships around on a table need to be as dignified as possible. Got it.

It certainly needs to be more dignified than the kind of internet cess-pools that spawn memes like these. Posting an image (as our esteemed second poster did in this topic) as the entirety of a post in the perpetuation of said 'joke' is not a valid contribution to anything, let alone the discussion at hand regarding the Striker's actual game performance.

If people want to use the joke among themselves, that is their business. Trying to push it to a 'viral' state with claims of developer backing and legitimacy for said joke alongside said image-posting crosses over into idiocy and I have no patience with it.

Am I making too big a point of this? Almost certainly. But the Archer joke is not something everyone is going to get or particularly like even if they do, and this insistence on it being the 'correct' answer rather than a moderately amusing coincidence has irked me.

meh

here's the thing

enough people enjoy it. Enjoyment of something is far more than worth its contribution to the thread

sounds kinda stupid to not exercise a very efficient post --> enjoyment ratio because someone's got a stick up their ass about it, especially when we have no responsibility to cater to said person's quirks

besides, I already contributed to the striker part of the thread. I believe the extra die pure sabecc provides makes him a superior duchess equivalent when using VI

It might be that the folks having fun with the reference are trolling the people that are earnestly trying to correct the record on the appropriate pronoun to use with "Duchess".

I know that's my motivation every time I link that video and give the time stamp.

Btw, if you look at the sourcing on that, the only source is the TIE Striker pack for this game... specifically, "Duchess"'s card... in other words the author of that fan written page pulled it out of their ass and its not based on anything canon. The only thing the source backs up is the card art showing "Duchess" flying over an AT-ACT at the battle of Scarif.
