Why are squadrons capped at 134 when 400 x .33 = 132 and 400 x .33333 = 133.332? Is this what Common Core looks like?
FFG Graduated Common Core
I don't think it's a conspiracy. Just rounding up
Common Core's math is about framing math equations in such a way that you can apply them better to every day life and to higher math. What you're talking about is called rounding up and I don't know how you got the two confused.
A fleet cannot spend more than one third of its fleet
points, rounded up, on squadrons.

.... What The Hell is Common Core?
Basic mathematics says you only round up at .5 and higher. This travesty is why the system is doomed to fail.

Yay, there it is. I knew it was 1/3 but was struggling to calculate how they hit 134 since 400 x .33 = 132.

Nah, just ineffectual math. There's a reason why they dismissed the only mathematician on the panel that created it and replaced him with another child psychologist.

I am still listing my response to the answers given thusfar as:

There's a second rounding error here. The fleet total is 1/3, but .33 is not quite one third. The three is repeating. What you need is 400 divided by 3, which is 133.333333333333.
And basic basic math rounded up at .5. But there were plenty of times in other subject matters that this was broken. It depends upon what you're trying to accomplish and when you hit good enough. So if they want to round it up entirely, that's up to them.

Federally-recommended educational standards for grade school children in the US. It's popular for people who have no idea how it works to assume dumb children are the result of Common Core rather than, you know, just dumb children (we had plenty of them when I was going through grade school regardless of what the teachers did, let me assure you).

You know I disagree with you pretty frequently, but you get a big high five from me on this one.
In short, the OP could've been about why 1/3 is rounded up in our particular game but instead he attempted to make some kind of joke that only works with old people and it failed.

*round your multiplier (a repeating decimal) down*
*wonder why your answer is low*

More or less.
Basic math doesn't say that. Basic math says you can round to the nearest whatever you'd like.Basic mathematics says you only round up at .5 and higher. This travesty is why the system is doomed to fail.
And this is why common core is bad. Math is a universal language. Changing it doesn't fix it, it makes you dummmmmmer.
This thread is quickly going to become a policy post more about common core than about the game.

I think it's really good for a miniatures game to have a Common Core set. Even if you only wind up using one of the two factions, it gives a good jumping off point for all players, and is a bit more stable than pushing out multiple starters. Especially for a universe like this one, where Empire was always going to start out with the more recognizable, more "marketable" ships.

That's just funny. +1 black dice to you.
In the United States we recently reevaluated what basic proficiencies should be taught in k-12 and it included teaching math differently than parents grew up doing so they can't solve their kids homework anymore and everyone is a panic because Obama did it and Obama bad..... What The Hell is Common Core?
With good reason. Before the standard was initiated...
"American students rank 25th in math, 17th in science and 14th in reading compared to students in 27 industrialized countries.”
...IE., yes, it's different from "how you learned it growing up"...but apparently "how your generation learned it" was the wrong way and was causing our country to lag behind the entire rest of the industrialized world. We've since started catching up quite well, because while it seems obtuse to people who learned The Old Way, what it is really good at is getting kids to visualize the math problem - which helps A LOT when it's time to transition into higher mathematics.
