New player ship advice

By Roughneck45, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Got a bunch of ships for Christmas and finally got around to playing and now I'm in deep. As a former long term 40k player this game is scratching my table top mini itch while burning a slightly smaller hole in my pocket and being accessible to my friends.

I love the models and know I'm going to end up owning quite a few so I was curious there were any recommendations. Currently I have both core sets, imperial aces, Millenium Falcon, Decimator, and the Most wanted pack. I'm going to try and keep all 3 factions roughly the same size because I'll be supplying the forces for both sides in most cases. With that in mind my next purchases were going to be Slave 1, the rebel aces pack or an A-wing, advanced Tie fighter for Vader, and maybe another one or two rebel ships. Was also considering a Hounds tooth and some Y wings because of the extra cards from the most wanted pack.

I'm a competitive style player so any advice on how these ships perform in the current environment is appreciated. I've looked up tournament builds and will probably mess around with some of them but if anyone has ideas for cool combos or upgrades with what I currently own let me know.

My other question is if its possible to purchase upgrade cards separate from the boxes they are sold in. Quite a few cards I'd like to have out of those epic sets.

Bump

Going to my local hobby shop today, any input would be appreciated.

As for the upgrade cards you can really only get them via eBay or some sort of trading group. I would recommend the lancer from scum over the firespray though.

Firespray is going to happen no matter what but i'll look into the lancer too.

Sucks about the cards but makes sense. When looking on eBay I noticed lots of the epic ships for sale with half the content missing and figured that was why.

Most truly competitive lists use upgrades from ship packs that by themselves aren't so competitive. A great example is autothrusters: many ships (Tie Interceptors in particular) really love this "worth its weight in gold" upgrade, but it comes with the StarViper which is a tad expensive to be very useful. For practice and friendly casual play, use squad builder programs and proxy upgrades for the ships you have. Right now, the best out of the box purchases that are mostly self contained competitive, IMHO, are:

Tie/fo: Omega Leader w/ Juke and Comm Relay

Imperial Veterans: Ryad and Deathfire (or Tomax) are both solid with in the box upgrades and could be easily put together with OL for a nice list

K-Wing: Miranda can be configured many ways and is always tough with her ability, plust the pack comes with 2 TLT which can make a Y super effective

Hero's of the Resistance: Rey w/Finn and Black One Poe work well together

If you have a local store to play at, try to find time to familiarize yourself with the group if not be a regular. Watching what others play/experiment with will help you find what works and most importantly: what you will enjoy flying. No list so far is completely unbeatable, and how you fly usually means more than what you fly. So just have fun!!! Losing (and lose you will) is much easier to deal with if you fly casual and really enjoy the ships/list you are running!!

Welcome to the insanity ;)

They were out of firesprays, but the fleet grew by 8 ships.

Y-Wing

Advanced Tie

A-Wing

HWK-290

Tie Bomber

Tie Defender

E-Wing

K-Wing

A bit underwhelmed by the Advanced Tie stats but everything else seems pretty solid, and I can't wait to use the Tie Defender. The HWK is interesting too, especially the Moldy Crow Title.

The tie advanced does struggle, Vader's awesome action economy is great. Casually I would proxy in the title that comes with the Raider. Same issue with the defender, you will probably want to proxy the titles from the Imp Veteran. Moldy Crow is fun, its a squishy ship and you need to protect it. Typically it performs a little better as a scum with the illicit cloaking device. That being said, you have the makings of near competative lists. Particularly Corran and Miranda. Also a K, Y, Hwk or A could work well together too. A-wing is gonna really want the Reb Ace expansion to be really useful, again for the title/char refit cards.

All that being said, play around with what you have for awhile and learn to fly them and proxy a few cards and decide what you like the most and build your fleet from there.
