Keeping up with Canon.......

By shotbyscott, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

HI

Do you try to keep the canon story line up-to-date in your game play? I was going to send my players to Genosis until I realised that the events in Rebels (as well as Catalyst and Rogue one) decided to kill of almost every one the planet.
We are currently about 3 weeks after the the battle of Yavin so Genosis should basically an extinct planet

Which canon? You know that the SW Ep4 movie as it was in 1977 is not the canon anymore. So things are canon only as long as there is no new super edition. And then there was A, B, C canon levels....my head starts to hurt. <_<

The most important thing is to keep the story fun in your games :) . Dont look at any timeline, dates, whatsoever.

Just because the Genoiasn are all dead doesn't mean the planet is completely unoccupied; scum could have filed in immediately after the empire abandoned the place; indeed they might have arrived on the planet before the empire even left to tip the alliance off for a pretty coin.

What is more important however is why are they being sent there? If they have a reason you can do it.

It isn't? What makes you claim this?

Not entirely so.

Check out the early issues of the (in canon) Darth Vader series from Marvel that just recently wrapped up. The storyline in question takes place shortly after the Battle of Yavin.

Further, in both tweets and at the end of the latest Rebels Recon, Pablo Hidalgo leaves the door open for further survivors by stating (paraphrasing here) that the catacombs we saw Klik Klak going into at the end of "Ghosts of Geonosis, Part 2" run pretty deep, so there's no telling if there are other surviving Geonosians.

At the end of the day, it's up to you and your group to decide how closely you want to stick to current canon.

You know that the SW Ep4 movie as it was in 1977 is not the canon anymore.

It's been superseded by the Special Edition. For example, Greedo getting his shot in at Han.

Ah, okay. Yeah, I guess if you take it to such details then you are right but I wouldn't consider that a change of canon... For me Han will always have shot first.

Strictly speaking, pre-Special Edition, Han didn't shoot first. There was no "second," because Greedo didn't fire, period. So, despite the commonly used "Han shot first," it's really just "Han shot." ;)

But, personal preferences aside, unless LFL goes in and changes it back, current canon is that Greedo shot, then Han shot in self defense, as part of retconning Han into always being the heroic rogue, rather than starting off as a (semi-?) hardened criminal.

I try to keep up with things, if only to keep things consistent with what the players might see/read in other areas so it feels like one universe. That said, if push comes to shove I have no problem throwing non-movie canonic elements out the window if it serves the story we're telling and makes for a better game - it's a big galaxy, and to take the Geonosis example, who's to say there isn't some hidden Geonosians deep in the planet? (Or maybe survivors from a hive that left the planet to go elsewhere have returned to try and rebuild their once great race).

...to take the Geonosis example, who's to say there isn't some hidden Geonosians deep in the planet?

That's exactly what Pablo's hinted at.

Wrong, I have a written confession....

current canon is that Greedo shot, then Han shot in self defense, as part of retconning Han into always being the heroic rogue, rather than starting off as a (semi-?) hardened criminal.

I've never understood the mentality behind the need to make that change. It was always self defense. Greedo had him at gunpoint and made a couple of statements which, at least in my mind, declared a pretty clear intention to pull the trigger. I don't see how killing him at that point made him less of a good guy.

To the actual thread topic, I don't make an effort to keep up with ANY of it. The only things which I adhere to are the events and facts of Episode IV and the facts (but not events) of Episodes V and VI. I also try to stick to existing planets and their locations; ignoring anything which conflicts with my campaign's history but trying to preserve everything else. Beyond that, I cherry-pick and alter as I please.

It's the difference between a denizen of the criminal underworld and cuddly, lovable rogue. Or something like that. /shrug

We were constantly winging it... if it fits the campaign or plot just go with it. I have the Han Solo Adventures as an ebook on my phone (bleargh, prefer the real thing but they're good to read while I wait for people who are late OR I'm earlier than planned) there is the novel timeline which runs for 3 pages before you even get to the contents page...

Actually, the reason is that the Lucas said in an interview, that Han and Greedo were supposed to fire at each other at the same time but the special effects for Greedo's shot never worked properly due to the camera angle and technology of the time.

The retcon is probably due to the Hollywood fad that has been going on for decades where they make beloved PG movies more kid friendly so not to scare young children. In the special edition of ET, Spielberg removed the Uzis and pistols from the FBI and federal agents and replaced them with walkie-talkies and flashlights to not offend people

Nope. Why bother trying to stay current with constantly moving goal posts.

George retconning history? Never! ;)

But, yeah...that second bit, is exactly the kind of thing I mean: transitioning hardened criminal Han into warm fuzzy Han.

It's been superseded by the Special Edition. For example, Greedo getting his shot in at Han.

And the SE was superseded by the 2004 DVD release, which was later superseded by the 2011 Blu-Ray release. Greedo scene probably is the longest edited scene in the history of the cinematography.

Details? Details? Who shot first is very important...

I generally take the stance that movie canon is 100% applicable to the game, and everything else I'll liberally cherry pick from if I think it suits the current adventure I'm running. Players follow similar guidelines for backstory stuff. And a lot of that stuff will receive alteration. Like I've got Dark Troopers in my game, but no mention of Rom Mohc or the Arc Hammer.

Why would you ever inflict this upon us?

There is no crime so heinous as to require that kind of punishment….

I dont recall Rogue One having anything to do with Geonosis?

Also, i guess it depends if you want to run the the FFG adventure "Long Arm of the Hutt", which would suggest Geonosis was alive and well (if under the Imperial thumb) at this time after the Battle of Yavin and still had its ruling class of Dukes (I did run this and my players run illegal goods there, so in my game it is still very much populated).

Call me unimpressed, this is as canon as the ewok movies. Not at all. ;-)

Not in the slightest. My campaign is set in an alternate Star Wars universe where the Death Star never destroyed Alderaan. As a result, the rebels never got to sound their klaxon of hope by destroying the Death Star. I've been playing with the same group of players for 30 years so they've been to the Star Wars universe with me many, many times through many official systems. As amazing as it sounds to me, I just couldn't get my players interested in returning... until I said it would be an alternate universe.

Indirectly ....through Catalyst and Rebels. poorly worded by me :)
