Think we'll ever get the V-wing?

By voltagejim, in X-Wing

You know, it might be interesting to use the V-wing as a ship to showcase the differences between each faction.

It's a ship that could feasibly be in each faction - making it a three-faction release might be cool.

  • Rebels - include a modification which grants an astromech slot
  • Imperials - include a modification which allows an astromech slot but prevents you taking unique astromechs (and include some "Imperial Only" astromechs)
  • Scum - include a modification which grants a salvaged astromech slot

you could easily put a 'second string' on by making the scum one also add an illicit, and the rebel one add an elite upgrade, and the imperial a system, or something similar.

Imperial Y-wings for the first omni-factional ship!

good comments. What do you guys think about adding the A-9 Vigilance or the I7-Howlrunner from Dark Empire?

Um, what was I gonna say again? Gun-something I think....but now I can only think about IMPERIAL X-WINGS FOR DA WINS!!!!

Ug, those ugly things. If the E-wing could find a place in this game then maybe those 'ships' could too. But for Non-TIE ImperiL fighters there is but one answer:

What's wrong about E-Wing? At least it looks like actual ship, unlike Tie Fighter xD

The E Wing is a ridiculous space unicorn. The MkII wasn't too bad, but the one we got in the game is an abomination.

i mind the engineering of the thing more than the aesthetics, honestly. Like, really? Two completely unsymmetrical engines put below the WINGS? That'd never be capable of flight.

So do you hate TIE fighters?

Nah. The center of thrust is on line with the center of mass in a very tight radius, so that'd actually be pretty agile. Given that repulsorlifts are a thing, TIE Fighters would actually be fully functional. E-Wings wouldnt work because you'd need a mass of thrusters pointed directly upward on the nose just to keep the thing flying in a straight line. Forget pitching downwards, it wouldnt be able to do it.

I mean, it's turning radius would probably be really tight. but that's because the laws of physics says this thing shouldnt be capable of powered flight.

Eh.... Aside from the fact that it'll never happen for like, 1000 reasons(chronological issues, not being canon anymore, etc etc), i really don't like those fighters at all design wise. Like many say about Prequels ships, i think they just don't fit the Star Wars aesthetic at all. The A9 in particular is just ugly as sin, it feels more like a Star Trek ship, being visually similar to a Bird of Prey.

And probably not on purpose, vis-a-vis the very Klingon-like Coynite race.

In a galaxy of contragravity, flight is irrelevant. ;)

This would be an awesome idea for at least one Wave. . .a three ship release usable by all 3 factions, so that everyone gets 3 new ships!

ah, but in vacuum, repulsorlifts lose their effectiveness. In fact, lots of things work in atmosphere only because they are in atmosphere. Like for example, the Su-27 line of fighters directs their engine thrust at a downward angle to assist lift. In a vacuum, that'd just make it fly forward and upwards.

So for the E-Wing, even IF you put a bunch of upwards facing repulsorlifts to provide enough force to keep the nose pointed down, in order to be able to pitch the nose down in flight, those repulsorlifts would have to be designed to be using only half their power to keep the nose level. That'd take a lot of energy nor would it work in vacuum, and engineering that wouldnt be necessary if the engines were just put in a reasonable location.

Probably not, given its atmosphere-only role. It had pretty much zero space capability and it was only really a cluster missile delivery boat.

I had thought the V-Wing was space-capable.

You gotta define which V-Wing you're talking about. There's two. One is a really dumb looking GCW-era combat speeder, and the other is a really cool looking CW-era starfighter.

Not sure about all three being useable by all three factions, but at least one truly cross-faction ship would be interesting, and the (clone wars) V-wing is a pretty ship.

Thoughts on the requirements for the ship:

  • With two twin laser cannons, it probably justifies a 3-dice attack
  • It probably wants to be at least three hull for the R5 and salvaged astromech to be worth even a second thought. Four is probably pushing it (although not impossible given that 4 hull/1 shield is not uncommon in scum heavy fighters). It should definitely have a lower hull value than the similar-era ARC-170 heavy.
  • Given the number of astromechs who play games with target locks (especially if the Empire is going to be stuck with generics like the R7 and targeting astromech) a the target lock action is probably a given.
  • It should probably have a good whilte dial rather than a heavily green one. That way, the difference between R2 astromech equipped Rebel and Imperial fighters, and unhinged astromech scum fighters, is very noticeable.
  • Given that the one time we see it on screen, it's flying escort to Palpatine & Vader, assuming a Royal Guard Pilot is not unreasonable. Therefore, aiming to make it a ship designed for medium-level PS pilots rather than the Soontir Fels and Inquistors seems like a good idea.

Inertial dampeners exist in Star Wars. They have the ability to flawlessly distribute acceleration throughout a body (i.e. a human body). Therefore, a thruster could be placed at any point on a ship, then with application of I.D. one can accelerate the entire ship without regard to moment about points not in line with the thrust vector. Once again unexplained Sci-Fi technology makes what is impossible in the real world common place.

That said, the E-wing is a little too funky looking for my tastes.
