Platform-specific DLC

By phantomwhale, in Mansions of Madness

Is there any development (current or future) planned to get around the platform lock-in on the DLC?

E.g. playing with laptop at home, or mini-tablet when travelling - would hate to be locked down to one device, as the laptop allows easy use of my giant monitor at home, and the mini-tablet is obviously much smaller / easier to carry to gaming evenings down the pub.

I'm holding off on any DLC because of this - which is a real shame, as I was keen to try the new scenario solo last month, but then didn't want to not be able to play it through with friends in the future. And, sadly, I'm one of those tight-fisted gamers who doesn't want to pay $10-15 per DLC scenario (whatever the cost of buying it twice in Australia is).

In the short-term it's solved with the new expansion - very excited to pick that up - but as someone who wants to get into the DLC in the future, has any consideration to this restriction been made or addressed at any stage ?

My guess is there isn't a really good workaround for this and there isn't likely to be anytime in the near future. Cross platform issues have plagued DLC content for other Apps and games as the game developer is largely at the mercy of the platform creators to want to make cross platform downloads work, which for money reasons they usually don't. This is why in my case I have used steam for most of my downloadable content because this makes it accessible on multiple computers. I recognize of course that this doesn't fix wanting access to content on a tablet (Unless there's a steam tablet I'm unaware of). However, I must confess that my knowledge of technology is limited (it would be a two my stat sheet).

I have also been reluctant to buy the digital scenario for this very reason. I want to play it, but I regularly play using 3 different devices depending on the situation and location (my desktop PC, my Android tablet, and the laptop of a friend I play with). I want to buy the scenario, and I think that 5 dollars USD is a very fair price, but I don't want to buy it multiple times.

Cross-platform access is a very solvable problem (I know there are tablet/phone apps that can sync your purchase data with the Steam version, for example), but frankly, I have very little faith that FFG / ANA actually cares to implement a solution.

They could sell limited use key codes that unlock the dlc on 2 devices

Again, this is an area I am not well versed in, but my understanding was that apple, amazon, google, etc. require as part of the business agreement that the seller not give apps or expansions (dlc) based on purchases made at other stores, the only exception to this requirement being Steam. At least it appears to be the problem Days of Wonder has run into with the Ticket to Ride App.

It's a shame that they are limited by the lockout that the other services have in place. I too was hoping for some kind of account login work around. I guess everyone has to get their cut from the use of the software..

Pulled out MoM for another game today - finally got through all the published missions!

Looked at the one DLC mission (still only one ?!) and note that the platform lock-in problem still remains - bleurgh.

But I guess if there is little desire to make more DLC, then it's not really a problem that's work spending the money to solve?

Spending money to get Google, Apple and Valve to change their terms of service to their disadvantage? I would be extraordinarily surprised if FFG had that kind of money, no matter how many cards and minis they sell...

Oh look - a much smaller games studio just did this for their companion app... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.ares.swordsorceryct&hl=en

(by just providing a code to unlock the DLC, which you enter into the app, no matter what platform it's on)

No T&C changes required; Just a different approach to how DLC is distributed.

Apple's policy on DLC is pretty clear:

Quote
  1. Purchasing and currencies
    1. Apps that unlock or enable additional features or functionality with mechanisms other than the App Store will be rejected
    2. Apps utilizing a system other than the In-App Purchase API (IAP) to purchase content, functionality, or services in an App will be rejected

This game has so much potential for DLC, so it is sad that it is marred by these issiues. Itm ay also be why there is only 1 DLC so far, it was a test to see how many were willing to shell out for it. But since many will be holding back because of the cross-platform problems, FFG may not do any or only very few future DLCs.

I guess so far the best place to get the DLC is on Steam, since many people I play with have either a Laptop or Desktop PC and the phone is bit *** to use if you are many people.
