Any Epic movement tutorials?

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing

An Epic tournament is coming up and I think I really want to do it. Problem is, I've never played with epic ships!

I need some video tutorial to watch so I can practice moving.

Any ideas?

Practice moving it on a table with a ship on each side. Practice turning it around an asteroid while having small ships stay in formation with it.

That is the best way to get how huge ships move.

Make sure your ship is diagonally placed to start, if you are to close (to paralelle) to the edge your tail end will swing off the mat if you need to turn early on, also start at an end if you can as letting the enemy straddle your ship is a death bringer!

Haven't seen angle tutorials but something has to be out there.

Tips:

Watch that turn. I've seen so many new capital ship drivers eat their own fighters trying to turn. Straight lines are usually good but that turn throws people due to the wide turn, how far it moves and the fishtail on the back end.

Rock placement is very different in epic. Two rocks at a time, within range one of each other.

Really avoid those rocks with your big ship. They take a face up card if they hit it, then remove the rock.

Reinforce is the best action on the big ship. A free evade for every shot incoming on that side. Often times it's better than recovering shields since you end up losing all the shields you just gained anyway if enemy ships have you lined up. Knowing when to sacrifice reinforce to do something else is tricky. The bigger two card epics can due two actions, but the small ones just get the one.

Okay so a couple of things to remember.

  1. While a 1-4 straight section is as long as the 1-4 straight template huge ships do not add their base like the small and large ships do. So a 1 is really a 1/2 straight, a 2 is a 1, a 4 is a 3 and so on.
  2. The bank section of the huge ship template is shallower than the 1 bank template for x-wing. For small and large ships it takes 2 bank turns to make a full turn (90 degrees) to the right or the left. For huge ships it takes 3 bank turns.
  3. Because of the long base the end fish-tales a little. So don't try to deploy your huge ship sideways or inacorner. The back section will go off the playmat.

What's tricky is Energy. You select your maneuver, then you move. Then comes Energy. You gain whatever the dial shows you, plus optionally the Engineering team. Then you allocate the Energy to the Upgrade cards that show Energy values (and optionally gain two energy from that reactor upgrade). The rest remains on the ship, which is important for the Recover action. Two-card-ships can take two actions, and every huge ship can gain an additional non-Recover and non-Reinforce action with the "Automated Protocols", which is kind if important. For two-card-ships the Reinforce and Recover-action are on the same card, so you can take only one of those, and Coordinate and Target Lock are on the other. To conclude the Tutorial, when you shoot in the Combat Phase, your Primary (if you have one) shoots PLUS all your equipped hardpoints. Keep in mind that the latter usually cost energy to fire, and some of these weapons have weird arcs and ranges.

I am not aware of any tutorials. Long time ago I built an outline of the movements in comparison to the small ship bases. This helps me tremendously.

Below are some Vassal versions

I did learn just recently that if a small or large based ship hits an epic ship, it only bumps like normal. Only when the epic ship hits the smaller ships do they blow up. I've been playing that whenever ANYONE hits an epic ship, it's destroyed. It's a much different game at that point.

Still need help on moving, though? I can help if you want. You basically put the line on the template on the middle portion of the ship, then move it forward per the speed. I think it's in the rules manual for epic ships.

Well, a small or large ship running into an epic ALMOST bumps like normal. The small/large ship also rolls a red die and suffer any hits or crits rolled. So it is technically possible to blow up by bumping into a huge ship.

Wait, I thought that only applied if the huge ship overlapped the small ship. So you can potentially cripple a huge ship by putting loads of small ships in the way like mines, but at that point wouldn't you rather just invest in Cluster Mines or Proton Bombs?

Er... Clarification...

So if the epic ship runs over something standard size... it crushes the standard and the epic ship rolls a die to see if it got a scratch in the paint.

If a standard size runs into the side of an epic, it treats it as a standard bump AND also rolls a red die to see if the standard sized ship took damage... The epic cruiser suffers no effect.

Yup, so never fly in front of one or splat.

IMHO I wish there was a dodge attempt. If you have no stress tokens, not ionized and have agility>0 you can roll one green die regardless of agility. That die can be modified with tokens. If no evade result the standard ship is destroyed, If evaded move the ship either straight back or straight forward until the bases are only touching. The standard ship cannot attack the huge ship while their bases are touching but the huge ship can attack the standard ship.

Every time I teach someone about movement, the end result of the conversation is, "You have to learn by doing, so go home and put some asteroids on your table and do some maneuvers."

I prefer the guess and hope method. Doesn't always work, but it's always interesting.

To clarify, I only get to play epic about once a year.

That sounds about norm. I wish there was a way to make epic more accessible. Surprisingly there is so much animosity against huge ships because of their price. However if you take a look at the points you can put into huge ships they are cheaper than buying 4 small ship or 2 large ship expansion packs.

Agreed. The most fun I've ever had was an epic game this past Gencon. My partner was a guy I met the day before in another really fun game; he's a member on here but I can't remember his screen name.

All four of us had a blast and enjoyed the entirety of the game. Epic always seems to have a better atmosphere to it, I think it's the extra explosions.

Er... By chance... Did you have two Gozanti cruisers? My partner was a guy I met playing Xwing that weekend as well!

Yup, haha! Good times were had, I wonder if the other two guys are on here too
