I like some of the new canon, dislike other bits of it. I want to see certain characters like Mara Jade make their return to canon though. I think it would interesting if they end up making "Legends" or "AU" games, and novels in the future so that they can play with concepts and ideas without having to fit it into the current canon, seeing what some fans might like or dislike and taking the strong bits of that and adding them over time.

Allow any Legends novels that have stories meant to be continued to continue under that heading. If there's something that Disney/Lucasfilm likes, then they can pick and choose from there. After all, the authors, whilst writing original stories, are writing stories in a universe that was created by someone else. In a sense, glorified, paid fan fiction. I'm not sure if these authors are assigned stories to write, or if they pick up on ideas offered by the company.... I really don't know how the process for that works, except that what they write has to somehow fit into the universe around it without conflicting other material (either in the offing, or pre-existing, or both).

And Disney/Lucasfilm still has a vast wealth of Legends material to pick from.

I think more than the reset, the insistence that everything produced is now canon that must be included or accounted for in the films is probably the biggest improvement. With the potential that any throwaway line in a book could now be the basis for a full film, it is making Disney really carefully consider what they'd be willing to let influence their film franchise.

This isn't to say that they can't also make mistakes, but it feels like they're being really careful about ensuring a certain quality standard with their new stuff. No more cheeky 9 year olds winning dogfights in old starfships, for example.

In some ways I agree with this, particularly after seeing Rogue One, but I also feel that the Resistance vs First Order conflict is just a rehash of the story we were already told in Episodes 4-6. I hope to be proven wrong in Episode 8 and 9. That said, I particularly miss Timothy Zahn's vision of the post RotJ universe in which the Empire is still clinging on amidst petty power politics of lesser Imperial lords. That was pretty interesting to me.

I agree with all of this! Timothy Zahn got it right in so many ways. They so should have made movies of the Thrawn trilogy.

And he didn't take away the happy ending of our heroes. They had new trials and what not but not what they did to them in TFA. And Jacen Solo wasn't a whiny little emo...

Because "Rogue Squadron" was canon as of Empire Strikes back when the callsign "Rogue Two" was used, maybe

I know its not what you mean, but its a technicality, right?

Also, Rogue Squadron's antics post-Endor aren't even remotely compatible with the new canon of "sueing for peace negotiations and disarming" between the two factions, unless maybe as Leia's Resistance. But so much of their EU adventures were against the Imperial Remnants at war against the New Republic, I dunno.
