Original Species: Kiragel

By Sharatec, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I've been developing this species for use in my games, and I would appreciate any feedback you might have (including on my use of the English language, in which I am regretably not fluent). The species inhabit the world of Kiragon, which can be found on http://myswrpg.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Kiragon.pdf (courtesy of the amazing Nytwyng ).

Kiragel
The Kiragar (sing. Kiragel ) are a race of humanoid reptilians from the planet Kiragon, where they evolved into sentience countless millenia ago. They mostly keep to themselves and rarely travel into the galaxy, prefering to leave most contacts with outsiders to the numerous Humans with whom they share Kiragon.
Physiology: The Kiragar are distictily crocodile-like in appearance, with markedly elongated mouths and short necks. As they have evolved past the need to use their teeth for killing prey, their jaws have lost quite a bit of strength and the teeth have dulled. Up to almost 5,000 years ago, most Kiragar still had short but muscular tails, but this trait is rapidly getting much more rare and is expected to be gone entirely in a few millenia. Kiragel senses are somewhat weak compaired to those of Humans; they tend to be near-sighted and have average hearing at best.
The typical Kiragel stands somewhat shorter than most Humans, at about 160 cm, and has a reddish-brown hue to her skin, though albinism is quite common. They are covered in numerous small and flexible scales and have thick hides that gives them reasonable protection against physical harm, but are otherwise no more muscular or durable than most other species. Though they nurse their young, there is little visible sexual dimorphism to be found in clothed Kiragar.
A Kiragel can be expected to live for about 70 standard years, and it is rare indeed for one to reach his 90th birthday. As old age begins to show, usually at about 60, Kiragar start losing agility and their muscles tense notably, ending up making them almost immovable but no weaker than they were in their prime. As they approach 65, most Kiragar no longer eat more than once a week, drinking about twice as often as their metabolism slows down.
Society: Kiragar take great pride in their ancient traditions of learning, and most of them try to find an area of intellectual pursuit through which to hone their minds. Knowledge is always deeply respected by Kiragar, almost no mather what the area of expertise. This scholarly attitude also carries great spiritual significance in that Kirarel religion is based upon the preservasion and eternal expansion of knowledge.
Most Kiragar prefer to live in harmony with the Humans and members of other species that share their planet, though after thousands of years of peaceful co-existence, there are still some that consider their neighbours "outsiders" and "disturbers of peace and quiet". Some isolated cities on Kiragon have stronger anti-Outsider attitudes than others, but generally few pay much attention to these conservative individuals, and close friendships between Kiragar and other beings are common.
It is customary among Kiragar, as well as many other inhabitants of Kiragon, to wear one or more narrow stoles of different colors draped across the shoulders. These stoles once served to convey information regarding an individual's profession and social standing, but appart from the near-mandatory "occupational stole" (its colors and pattern giving few details beyond "mechanic" or "priest"), they are little more than fashion statements in modern times. It is considered most elegant to allow one's stoles to hang free down to the waist as part of formal wear, but otherwise it is very common to stitch them to the tunic to keep them out of the way.
Homeworld: The Expansion Region world of Kiragon has a quite pleasant climate, which allows it to produce an abundance of foodstuffs that are exported to other planets. Despite not being particularly close to the Core, it also gets quite a lot of tourism. Nominally, Kiragon remains a planetary republic, but it is an ill-hidden secret that most actual power lies with the Imperial Governor.
Language: All inhabitants of Kiragon learn to speak Basic as their primary language, though many also study the ancient language Old Kiragon. Kiragar tend to emphasise sibilant sounds when speaking Basic, but are usually fairly easy to understand for outsiders once they get used to the pronounciation. Having a rich and varied vocabulary is considered a virtue.

Looks reasonable to me.

I don’t really see why players would want to play them over any other species, but I don’t see any major flaws.

Thank you! If I may ask, would you think it reasonable to give them 95 starting XP, or are they balanced as-is?

My suggestion would be to change the Skills to read: "Kiragel gain 1 free rank in any Knowledge skill. These skills still cannot be trained above 2 at Character Creation." Or "Kiragel gain 1 free rank in Mechanics, Computers, or Medicine. These skills still cannot be trained above 2 at Character Creation." I can't remember the XP breakdown that someone on this forum did but I think 90 XP sounds about right.

Kiragel gain 1 free rank in Knowledge (Education), and 1 free rank in any Intellect-based General or Knowledge skill. These skills still cannot be trained above 2 at Character Creation.

The wording is fine and I don't have an issue with a free rank in a Intellect-based skill. I still think that you, as the designer, should choose between the options of either the Knowledge skillset or the General skillset. Offering both isn't unbalancing, in my opinion, but there isn't another specie that gets such a wide range of skills to choose from for a free rank.

I like how it looks overall. As far as the knowledge/intellect based skills, what do you want to convey about them as a species by giving them such a broad range?

Not a problem overall, but I'm curious what that conveys.

My intention was to show that the Kiragar, naturally quite intelligent, see it as their duty to put their sharp intellects to the test and learn a craft/profession where it is of use to them - in whatever way each individual sees fit.

Does that explain it better?

Meditate on this, I must. Thanks again, I appreciate it!

The intellect of 3 does this fairly well but the knowledge skills coupled with the enduring seems very contradictory. Not over powered, but contradictory.

Imagine a race that has Brawn 3 + 1 rank in Brawl and 1 Rank in a brawn based skill or combat skill and had a talent in Knowledge Specialization, Researcher, or other Intellect boosting talent
