Greetings all!

A tool I've grown to love over the last year is Slack. Slack is a sort of invite-only chat room on steroids that's used by businesses or shared interest groups that facilitates the easy exchange of information. There's a great web, desktop and mobile app and it's just a very efficient and fun way to facilitate serious conversation or dank (armada) memes.

It's fairly asynchronous in that you don't have to constantly be in it to benefit from what's being said. You can log in when able and join in the conversation, but you can also set up as much in the way of custom notification as you want so you're e-mailed when someone directly messages you or mentions something you're interested in.

If you're familiar with IRC and IRC Channels, it's like those on steroids.

You can also make your own private rooms within the team (that even administrators can't view) to discuss things such as game nights, campaigns, and well, you get the idea.

It's free, but invite only. If you'd like to join please send me a message with your e-mail address you'd like to register with the team. I don't need your real name, just a place to send the invite to.

Eventually if/when this picks up I'll be looking for responsible volunteers to help with any moderation/emoji-creation/etc.

For now though, lets share in the hobby together!

Wether or not its my fault is irrelevant - it still took a bit of wind out of my sails...

We already have a Discord channel, and its associated Rules section - and I'm there too - but the biggest issue would be the same for Slack - its just not as populated as the forums, as a sub-derivative of the forums...

I applaud the effort that goes into allowing Armada players to connect on any level. I just can't be involved in all of them... >.>

I wondered if folks felt this would step on Discord channels toes a bit, in all honesty it wasn't the intention. Discord is a similar but different sort of community. Discord is an amazing medium for voice communication as well as chat, but it's more of an being-active-in-the-channel sort of medium. Slack does this but also allows for a separate means easily checking back in as to what's been said, or even getting notification when someone's left a message for you privately.

I use both Discord and Slack, but I use them for different groups/reasons.

If folks decide Slack is too much and it dies on the vine, that's fine-- but at least the attempt will have been made. Slack has been really popular with groups like The Dice Tower to add some tangible benefit to the community.

if you feel this steps on your toes and own efforts to foster the community, I apologize. I can only encourage you to give it a try irregardless and see if it works for you. Either option costs you nothing but sign-up time.

The trick is, basically, Upselling what you have. What will move a group of people (said critical mass) to join in?

Punch on that, and you might get somewhere.



Very few people are like me, after all... PC user only, sits here all day... A lot of people are either mobile, semi-mobile, or at least flexing their time.

I tried Discord. But I found it redundant with how much I am on the forums. I also try to stay away from the online community when I am at home and during the weekends, so that's another reason I stopped Discord. It's not a bad idea, but I don't enjoy massive chat rooms with several convos going at the same time. The forums are easier since you kind of have to commit to what you are saying, instead of posting several things with a sentence each.

I hope it goes well though.

I think the Discord is most useful for the Vassal/TTS community, really.

Also it would probably be more useful if the **** admin knew anything about Discord and put in more than a half-assed effort on it.
