X-wing fix as part of a Campaign box. Good or bad idea?

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

Please don't tell me whether you think a boxed campaign is likely or not. Discuss that elsewhere.

Just curious what the consensus would be. IF we get a campaign for X-wing (the game) that contains useful or essential upgrades for X-wing (the ship), would that bother you as a consumer?

A boxed campaign is a convenient way for FFG to package a lot of cardboard for new pilots and upgrades but might alienate players that aren't interested in playing the campaign. Thoughts?

I want a campaign. If it's as good as HotAC, it will be worth it. I expect a campaign will also include a ship or three.

There would be a lot of people that would be upset about getting a campaign box for a competitive fix. Just look at all the people that complain about having to buy an Epic ship. Heck, just look at all the people that complain about having to buy the Starviper for the Auto Thrusters.

I wouldn't, though. I love all that stuff.

I think a campaign box would eb a great way to go to introduce a bunch of new pilots and upgrades for a whole slew of ships without having to re-release the ship. Armada just put out the Correlia campaign with a bunch of new star fighters and objectives which will see competitive play. I think it'd be good.

I'd be thrilled with just a campaign, so if they decide to add some useful upgrades/pilots to it then bonus.

Actually I think it'd be a great idea to release just a box, no ships, as a $20 campaign set. I think people really complain about having to buy epic ships because they cost between $50 and $100. That's much harder to stomach than buying a small or large ship. The number of people that complain about buying a Starviper is dramatically lower than those that complain about buying a Raider.

A campaign set would really open up what this game has to offer. I play a comparable amount of HotAC to normal games, just because of how much fun it is.

My feeling: if the box had fixes "just" for the X-Wing then I would be dissapointed. I think that would feel like a power creep with a "oh and you get this campaign on top".

Now, if you had a Campaign box with multiple pilots, upgrades and such designed for underused ships (X-Wing, Starviper, Kyz, etc, etc) then that would feel different and I'd be on board with that.

If, for a reasonnable amount of money (let's say 40$), I get upgrades that put a large section of my fleets back into play (let's say 100 to 200$) and get a cool campaign on top, then I'd be good with it :)

Honestly this'd be a great way to add a bunch of diverse aces into the game. HotAC already has ace pilots that are diverse, it wouldn't be hard to add upgrades that combine with new pilots to give essentially the same effect as HotAC without adding a bunch of bloat.

The Armada campaign retails for $30 US. I think I would do an involuntary happy dance if FFG brings an X-wing campaign with new pilots and options for existing ships in such a product. If we get a dozen new pilots with say 20 or so upgrade cards, that would be the equivalent of 2 small expansion packs in cards for the same price. Then you are basically trading the campaign for new miniatures. I would be super OK with that.

Another campaign for x wing would be a good addition, but kept separate from the competitive version. Aturi Cluster was fun but would have been much better with no AI and a player controlling the Imperial side, like the GM of Imperial Assault. Need to bring some characters and storyline to x wing. The standard competition gets old in a game that has so much modification potential. Mission Builder is fun for this purpose but vastly outdated. X Wing campaign series would be pretty cool. Space stations? Landscapes? Cityscapes? Multi-level cardboard pop-outs? Hmm...

Space stations would be glorious

I disagree that it would be better without an AI. I much prefer to play things cooperatively or even solo sometimes. Having a GM controlling the imperial side may be fun, but it's easier to design the game with an AI and opt out than try to opt into one.

Rest assured that IF Fantasy Flight do a campaign for x-wing, it will be competetive.

Honestly, I think it would be a fantastic way to put out a selection of upgrades, for all sides, in box without actually putting ships.

I hope there is a campaign, but i think that based on how that 77 plus mode that they announced works out they may just keep making new ways to play the game, instead of a campaign.

Campaign boxes are far cheaper than Epic ships, and if Corellian Conflict is anything to go by, has a TON of content.

I will say one thing about campaigns...this is where X-wings shine. Babaganoosh and I are testing out missions for our GenCon event that will be balanced. I keep looking at them and the go-to ship that I pick as the Rebels is the T-65 X-wing. When you play missions where speed and hard hitting is important, you want an X-wing. The B-wing and Y-wings are too slow. A-wings don't pack a punch (with the exception of one Missile). Other ships cost too much and you need numerous ships. The X-wing packs a lot of punch, isn't easy to kill, and can get you where you need to fast.

I'm wondering if the X-wing really needs a fix for campaign gaming?

Missions usually require you to cover several spots on the table while you play. If you are putting your points into large based ships or aces like Corran Horn, you don't have a lot of points to spend on ships to cover the whole table. Just a few Aces would probably kill an enemy list quick enough in a tournament game, but when you are forced to play to the objectives, many of these Aces don't hold up. Dash might be good to arc dodge and blast people with HLC, but if your opponent takes a bunch of cheap ships to blow up an objective, Dash can't do the damage fast enough to all those ships.

It's tournament gaming where X-wings need a fix. They are great in missions normally (if designed well).

As much as I'd like to see both a campaign and a small boost to the X-Wing... I'd bet a lot of people would complain about having to buy a campaign to play tournaments.

A "Rogue One" themed campaign box would be amazing. With 1 Blue Squadron X-Wing + 1 Y-Wing and 2 TIE Fighters + 1 TIE Striker. Great chance to add those veteran pilots from Rogue One, the X-Wing "fix and some elite Y-Wing pilots.

or

A "Partisan" themed campaign box, with the story of Saw Guerrera and his group of "extremists" fighting the Empire.

I love Heroes of the Aturi Cluster, but I would prefer to see a game more like Imperial Assault, where there is a human player behind the bad guys.

I think a campaign box with fixes for every factions underperforming ships would be glorious. $30 for a bunch of new upgrades that make the ships I never play with feel new? Sign me up. Why would anyone complain about buying that over an aces pack that might fix 2 ships. They could include Interceptor and Punisher for Imps, X-Wing and Y-Wing for Rebs and Kyhraxaxs and Star Viper for Scum. On top of that you get a campaign like Corielian Conflict to play. I doubt this happens any time soon but I for one would welcome it.

I suppose "technically" it would be no different then when they include fixes with epic ships even though not everyone plays epic.

I picked up my Armada campaign box the other day, and it does not at all disappoint. The campaign itself has rules that are a dramatic shift away from regular play (hooooo boy do you have to be careful with your uniques... be they pilots or even upgrades), and the content for it is compelling enough to have caught the attention of some heretofore lurkers of the game.

The actual components in the box are also fantastic. Every Imperial I and Rebel I squadron got a pair of new unique pilots. Some of them coming slightly from left field in how they work, but all of them fantastic. It also came with a plethora of new objective cards, and even some new types of obstacles. It's ridiculous value for it's price.

The kicker is that all of this works in competitive, too. It's received universal acclaim in it's execution. I'd be shocked if an X-wing version didn't follow suit. New pilots for the old stalwart ships, maybe a few frame-specific upgrades. Something that a casual, new player can pick up after purchasing a core set and a few ships and have a great time with, as much as a seasoned veteran would appreciate deep diving into the new possibilities in competitive while playing out the campaign in their FLGS.

I'd be 110% in favour of this for X-wing. It might be the breath of fresh air it needs.

R1 campaign pack was my proposition/guess what SWX58 will be. I was wrong, alas....

I would certainly buy a campaign pack.

I think this is a great idea for X-Wing; I have heard about the Armada one, and it seems that it has produced fantastic vibes and I cannot find any haters. Like the Admiral stated, if it could fix broken ships like the Punisher, Karaxeraxeraxe, StarViper, etc. that would be bonus sauce.

Campaign box is a great idea. New pilots for ALL THE SHIPS!

X-Wing fix is a horrible idea. It doesn't need a fix.

Really? I have a much different perspective.. The entire reason HOTAC is awesome is because there is AI and you can play cooperatively with your friends.

You could always have a player fly the Imperials with HotAC.
