Continue to Be the Community We Want to Be! (Old Thread, Still Relevant)

Of course, I think the game is in a really healthy spot which may color that opinion.

I can't speak for everybody, but I think most of the people on the activation-gameplay-is-a-problem side of the aisle at least accept that our analysis is possibly a minority analysis. We're looking at the same data and coming to separate conclusions. I think the real "shouting-down" hasn't happened in the threads where actually discussion is taking place, but in side discussions where people can't help but make snide comments putting down valid opinions, such as how the FAQ thread almost immediately turned into smug "I told you so's".

Edit: Which inevitably bring every topic back to the same **** flotilla discussion.

For all my joking around about thread necromancy....

Actually I have been doing a lot more joking than usual to try and diffuse tension. Hopefully you folks are receptive to the jokes / see that it is all in good fun.

I've been getting frustrated over the amount of complaints that wind up on the forums, and have been guilty of at least thinking "Git Gud" (and in one case posting it in jest). But I know that the people airing these complaints are also players, invested in the game, that want to have fun playing our horrible, broken, dead game. And they are coming in with the same love for the game that I have, with the goal of making it better. Even where we disagree, their goals and mine are the same.

Realizing that most of the disagreements about flotilla use are based on having a different opinion as a starting point helped me understand both sides of the argument and really just kinda relax about the whole thing. So, that was nice.

On this side, I'd love to see how community and FFG stop calling WORLD champioships to NATIONAL USA championships. Since is virtually impossible for thousands of players all around the world to travel to a local USA store to compete for that.

How can you name a world tournamet an event with 95% of the participants being from the same country?

Right, much like politics, if a disagreement is coming from a fundamental difference of opinion, there's nothing I can do except just accept we don't agree. And that's totally cool.

Yup. I'm just gunna keep doing what I do and ignore if people hate my list because I run flotillas.

Should countries get to bid for the world championship a la the World Cup and the Olympics? :D

How do you explain Miss Universe contests????

I think FFG should take resposibility on this and make it more restrictive for stores about organizing world contests.

Can't upvote this enough!

Why are we talking about the location of the World Championship in this thread?

Not saying it shouldn't be discussed, but it's an odd spot to have this discussion. @xerpo do you want to start a new thread on the subject?

Well they only sold a hundred some tickets, so the thousands of players you claim want to go, actually can't go anyway. No seats.

And they are based out of Minnesota, so it's cheaper for them to host it themselves.

I don't disagree with the concept of having Worlds outside of the US, but it seems like a logistical nightmare for FFG.

Sorry? What?

Only one store organises the World Championships - FFG HQ itself in Roseville.

The Winners of the European Championships will be getting Tickets, Room + a bunch of expenses paid. That is something that I wouldn't get being in Canada, despite the fact that Airfare from this side of the Country is about the same as it is from the UK...

So... I mean. Yes, do as Biggs suggests - create a new thread and tell us what you mean...

Then we should stop using "World champions" lists as references of top metas and statictics, but as national metas.

Ooooookay...

Happy to see people still pushing the "Fly Casual". I keep hearing about it from the X-Wing crowd how they're the most "chill" group, but I've yet to see it on the forums and on the tabletop. I assume we all just want to push around space ships we remember from our childhood and have a cohesive rules set to go with it. I'm here to have fun and the moment it stops being fun, I'm not buying anymore.

The best way to kill a community is to make the environment you play in awful for your friends/opponents.

We absolutely should be still pushing for a friendly, casual atmosphere, even at the highest levels. We want new players to come into the game, we want them to learn quickly (and have the desire to learn quickly) so they can get up to speed with the game. This is how we build our community, after all.

Most importantly, we want these new players participating in the community. We want them to ask questions, have opinions, and be unafraid of being wrong.

We want our meta to be fluid and fun! We don't want to tell any player "no one does this, it's stupid" and miss out on seeing something outside the box work, or fail in such a way that it sparks further thoughts of "how can I make this work?" We don't want 4 "A" Tier lists winning every tournament. At least, I don't.

I'm hesitant to call it "Fly Casual" these days. That isn't inherently an FFG term, it's more of an X-Wing term for better or worse. I think our phrase is more along the lines of "Don't be a Jerk", and I'd like to imagine it always has been even if we haven't put it on a T-Shirt (yet).

Looks like we need a "Don't be a Jerk." T-shirt made then.

At last year's Worlds, the feel of the Armada tournament stands out in my opinion. Armada is a mentally taxing game. We were crammed into a meeting room with little place to put any of our actual ****. Everyone still had a blast. The FFG folks consistently commented about how weird we are. (This is consistent with all of my "little" tourney experiences.)

I don't play X-Wing yet (or RuneWars, or...**** you FFG), but those folks looked like they were solving equations. It was super intense. Of course, take that with a grain of salt, I was drinking beer and watching the top 4 cut.

"Star Wars Armada: Don't be a jerk."

or

"Star Wars Armada: Don't be THAT guy."

Maybe with a picture of Vader choking out Motti?

We already have "Classic Ben" T-Shirts.

This is going to sound crummy, and I don't mean to rain on your feel good parade... I've been involved in a whole lot of different games and their communities in my days! Aside from 40k who seem to accept that they are, in fact, the worst (jk!)... every community says these exact same things.

I agree though! Worlds was great and people were chill... but I find that is the norm for most of these silly games. Maybe a bit of confirmation bias?

I totally agree and wonder why we even argue about these little pieces of plastic. We are truly lucky in our place in the galaxy if we have nothing else to complain about.

Further- Forums rarely accurately represent the community as a whole.

Finally, I sincerely hope that anyone who has watched my videos or played me at a tournament can say I was a good opponent. Long ago, I stopped deriving any amount of self-esteem from my performance in dumb miniature games. I do, however, strive to ensure my opponent and I both have a fun, gentleman-ly game. That is more important to me than winning by a huge margin. Thankfully, I do not think I am alone in that approach in both this community and the numerous others I have had the pleasure of participating in.

Yes indeed. Well said :)
