What happened to coins?

By MrAndersson, in X-Wing

I was sad to discover the prize support for the 2016-2017 season does not contain any coins. I had already started a small collection from the 2016 season and was looking forward to the opportunity to expand it.

Does anyone know the reason behind the decision to stop giving out coins? Or if they will be coming back any time soon?

They joined their patch brethren in prize support heaven...

Inflation.

I have no idea but as far as I am concerned its good riddance. I prefer prices with actual play value (Tokens/AA/Dice/Rulers)

That takes me back to paintball days.... good times. Play at the event, get the patch for it. You could always tell who the die-hard players were by the lack of blank space on their "patch vest" or shirt or whatever they used to show them off.

Got to see one of the prize packs for this quarter at the local shop as we started planning the next tournament... it's... sadly disappointing compared to past packs. I mean, I'm glad they still exist, but it got downsized a lot.

I might have to start looking into custom card runs to replace these things... I don't feel there's anything in this pack that's worth trying for. More time to fly fun stuff, I guess.

Maybe that's a good side effect of this change. A lot of prize hawking was going on with people coming in and ending up with a load of coins from places they ordinarily didn't play at.

I remember seeing where one guy used the coins as shield tokens in a tournament.

I like our local $5 tournaments where we typically have somewhere between 6-10 players. Everybody goes home with something and nobody really wins a prize that sets them apart from everybody else.

We periodically have a bigger tournament with more prize support that attracts more competitive players, but the smaller tournaments help draw in the players just starting. In the last 2 months, I think we have had at least 6 or more new players show up for their first tournament and are happy when they walk away with an upgrade card or some tokens.

I usually dig into my stash of upgrade cards and hand them a Gunner or VI card - just to give them more incentive to come back.

Split the TB tokens out a bit should make it a bit more interesting

All we've seen this year is the regional kit (which has only contained a coin once) and a seasonal kit, which also has only had a coin once. Maybe wait to see the store championship kits before complaining that a certain prize is gone for good.

:( seriously. I never quite got good enough to get a coin and I really liked them. Especially the 2016 Store Champ ones. Maybe the 2017 Store Champ kit will have them.

I hope so. I still need a few more so I can have enough for Shield Tokens for most lists. I'm running Dengossk atm and sadly I don't have 11 coins :(

So they're almost exactly back to what they used to be...

Original Kits:

1 Poster to advertise event

1 Medal w/ Ribbon for winner

2 sets of acrylics

2 sets of unique alt art pilot

17 sets of generic alt art pilot

Rules & Instructions

New Kits:

2 sets of acrylics

3 sets of unique alt art pilot

17 sets of alt art upgrade card

Rules & Instructions

So we got "spoiled" there in the middle when they were giving 4 sets of acrylics, which imo was WAY too many - everyone and their mother seemed to have all of them. It's nice that they're giving the TO an actual prize via the 3rd alt art pilot, especially since we often don't have the full 16 so the extra generics go to the TO anyways, so who needs to get a 17th of those =P. And the medal/coin was kinda pointless, sure it was nice to win, but wasn't worth the cost to put it in the kit imo. The thing I'm most PO'd about is that they've rewritten the suggested rules to have the top 4 pick a prize instead of the top 2 getting the prizes.

There were 8 sets of acrylics, and there are definitely more than 2 sets in the current ones.

Nope. Two bags of tractor beam tokens, five tokens in each.

Hmm, I guess where I was opened multiple ones then. But there were 8 stress bags before.

Some stores broke the sets up into smaller sets, but the with the exception of the 8 sets of 3 stress, the most there have been is 4, and the current is 2. If you want a full history:

I really liked the coins but was never able to get one either due to tournament timings, opponents on certain days, etc...

Everyone here showing off their coinage like it's nothing... I'm actually pretty upset they got rid of them so no I won't have the chance to earn it myself. I don't care about some plastic acrylic crap.

Considering some ideas that coins could (should?) be used as a form or in game currency it may be best that they are gone.

I liked the coins, but then I never won any... Or the medals... Really, I just missed out.

If anyone has coins and find them useless feel free to send then to me ... I have two from store champs (one for future trading), and the one with the tie fighter ... my buddy won the league session to get the x.wing coin last year ... hope we get more coins in the future

Bring back coins!

We need Sabine edition coin!

I'm really hoping they have them for Store Champs season (I started playing in tournaments right at the end of last season). And hopefully they will hand out another one at worlds like they did last time so I can at least get 1 more.

Oddly enough - the thing I'm most annoyed about is the lack of promotional poster. Something I could hang in my FLGS to announce the next tournament was incredibly useful.

That said, the guys that run my FLGS are really happy about the pack size reduction. :)

I was more partial to medals than coins for OP kits. By the time I started playing patches were already gone... so I'd be good with bringing them back.

Maybe they could do some pilot helmet or Imperial rank patches next.

There was ever only 1 patch to my knowledge. And I agree, I was totally planning on making my conquest shirt/jacket with all the patches that never came to exist.
