Tanukifest 2017: BigDeck & Modern Championships: April 29th

By Lapp, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Howdy folks, Bayushi Jinn-Ja here once again to announce our final unofficial L5R event before the re-launch at Gencon 2017.
As you may recall from last year, with no Kotei season, the Tanuki Clan (Philadelphia playgroup) wanted to continue hosting events to coincide on the same weekend as the Yards Real Ale Invitational beer festival, as we've done for the past 5 years to combo with the Atlantic City and Phoenixville Koteis, and last year with our Tanuki Salon event.
On April 29, 2017, at 10am will once again be the unofficial L5R Modern World Championship, hosted by it's founder, Donovan Sparks. Chris Medico won this event last year, and took home a custom Tanuki playmat, hand drawn on site by artist Charles Urbach.
Likewise, at 3pm will be the BigDeck Championship, hosted by Antonio Calderon, under the new 80/80 format. Mark Armitage won this event last year with the Ninja Stronghold, taking home an original piece of Tanuki art, hand painted by Drew Baker on site.
David Lapp will be Scorekeeper for both events, with judges including Jon Palmer, David Campos, and Cameron Conarroe, amongst other attendees.
This year L5R Artists in attendance will be Byron Mutt Wackwitz who will provide a prize to the winner of the BigDeck event. Prof Paul Herbert was unable to attend but graciously sent prize support and a unique art piece will also be provided to the winner of the Modern event.
Last year we've received a generous amount of foil rare sets from the Ivory and 20F arcs and many promos, some of which were never released and intended for Onyx, many left over for prize support this year. We have additional card collections and participation prizes.
Cover charge for facility entry from 9am to Midnight is $20. Both tournaments and side events are free. There will be some EE games and Draft occurring, as well as general celebration of 21 years of camaraderie.
Proxies are allowed for both events, no limit.
Information on Modern can be found at http://l5rmodern.com/
Information for BigDeck can be found at http://shirobigdeck.com/
This year we will return to the sites of our original Tanukifests, with the event being held at
Delta Community Support: 2210 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Glenside, PA 19038
We will have a gathering the night before for Draft and other L5R games at 24 E Glenside Ave, Glenside PA

Thanks!

I notice how you don't need to mention which Clan Chris was playing :)

Can't recommend this event enough to people. We've had a fantastic time every time we've attended - the atmosphere is wonderful, and the prize support amazingly bountiful. Drew and Charles are incredible artists and it's worth the journey just to chat to them (and buy many things from them). Watching them create the prizes on the day is jaw-droppingly cool.

Really looking forward to hopefully being there again this year!

Thanks Mark, really hope you can make it as well!

Looks like we'll have a couple more artists in attendance. Please take note of the updates here and on the FB page in the coming months!

Bumpity bump bump, just wanted to update that I've not heard yet when the Yards ticket sales will be live for the event the next day, will update accordingly. Also working on bringing in additional artists!

Hey folks, just to update since a few people have asked, Yards tickets have not gone on sale yet. I anticipate they will within the next 2 weeks. This will be the final Real Ale Invitational at the Yards location you know and love (new one is nearby on Spring Garden). It will be on April 30 to coincide with this event as usual.

A few announcements:
1. Yards tickets are currently 20% off, so if you want to snag one while they're under $50, do so soon @ https://yards.ticketleap.com
2. If you have extra BigDeck and Modern decks, please bring them, I know quite a few people attending mainly for the comradery and don't have one.
3. We have up to 4 l5r artists attending, I just need to verify with each of them. Like last year, entry fee will go to them for unique prize support. I'm not going too crazy outside of that, I know most of you aren't coming for the shinies, but there will be other promos, like from last year, and people trading to complete collections.

And what would be an unofficial tournament without unofficial story choices. GenCon approaches and the details about FFG's plans concerning the story and how the players will be able to interact with it will finally be revealed, but it doesn't mean you have to wait for a little alternate timeline fun.

Details on the Tomorrow's Prophets' project can be found here:

The story prizes for Tanukifest will be as follow (and I believe we kept the best for the last)

Jade Edition (Modern prizes)

1. The winner of the Modern tournament must choose one of the faction that was removed from the game at some point, preferably around Jade and Gold (Brotherhood, Naga, Toturi's Army, Yoritomo's Alliance, Shadowlands Horde). It will be saved in part from Tomorrow's destruction and potentially create a new faction or radically change another. It may not be selected by other players even if it would otherwise be a legal choice.

2. The top player of each clan will be allowed to save a member of his clan who was alive at some point during the Jade Edition. It

can be any personality, unless it is also a main tournament prize, as long as it existed in an official L5R work (the card game, the official stories, the RPG books or the Winter Court).

3. The tournament organizer is free to select one individual who showed exceptional sportmanship, an overall impressive attitude, or any other special quality worthy of mention. This individual will be able to select one unaligned/minor clan personality or an icon to be saved. The icon must be an item, a location, a school or something similar which was created or discovered during the Jade Edition.

Gold Edition (Big Deck prizes)

1. The winner of the Big Deck tournament must choose one of the Toturi's children. He or she will be saved from Tomorrow's destruction and radically change the factions and the balance of power in the City of Prophets. He or She may not be selected by other players even if it would otherwise be a legal choice.

2. The top player of each clan will be allowed to save a member of his clan who was alive at some point during the Gold Edition. It

can be any personality, unless it is also a main tournament prize, as long as it existed in an official L5R work (the card game, the official stories, the RPG books or the Winter Court).

You know, all those are playable in modern.

Yoritomo's Alliance is just Mantis Clan and pretending they are different things is just kind of silly.
Shadowlands Horde is Spider Clan and pretending they aren't is almost as silly, but if you want to split hairs-- they have The Maw's Grave as a stronghold.
Naga has The Forgotten Temple. (Granted, it is Naga/Ratling/Miscellaneous)
Toturi's Army has Journey's End Keep exp, Lost Traveler's Castle, Palace of the Breaking Dawn and Sunrise Keep.
Brotherhood has The Lost Path (which, granted, given that it stops you from winning in the two ways Brotherhood was good at winning is hardly a fair replacement.)

Granted-- you probably cannot come up with the necessary "win on turn 4" deck using any of those strongholds necessary to be competitive in the environment and the highlander rule screws them on personalities (not so much the Maw) as they might just barely reach the minimum required 25 unique personalities to fill out half a 50 card deck, but... they exist. They could not possibly win a tournament by a long shot but... kudos to anyone who at least tries to make and play them!

Though, really, the factions you wrote for your personal AU here are all... very random. And none seem like they would be particularly big, they really seem like small bands that happened to rally around one particular influential leader or another. I would think there would be dozens, if not hundreds, of these sorts of groups in a totally shattered empire. Like every city and temple and castle would spawn the sorts of small factions like the ones you describe.

Did somebody say something?

I lose in the final last year and you tell me my faction could not possibly win a tournament? Harsh, man ;)

I stand corrected then. I figured the factions that have 10x the available personality base would be a lot more dangerous simply from being able to find enough personalities that support a particular victory condition and have abilities that can trigger off of one another in combination. If nothing else, they are sure to have a good wide base of personalities that are nearly identical but were just printed in different editions while, for one of the lost factions, you are kind of scrapping every last one available into the deck. But, it looks like both the Forgotten Temple and the Maw can work just fine.

Also... I was thinking of using Naga and Ratlings out of the Forgotten Temple, I neglected to realize that the abilities allow you to run a meaty Oni deck out of it. And it seems like there aren't enough Naga or Ratling personalities in modern to run them as an effective deck if you are tied to the highlander format.

I only really tried to make a ronin deck and an imperial honor running deck and found well... neither worked particular well. I tried to put together a goblin deck out of maw-- but one good Fear effect and the whole army goes up in smoke.

Then you are doing something very very wrong...

I am pleased to announce that Sparks will be in attendance, so we will once again have the authors of both in attendance for their respective championships!

Unfortunately due to personal commitments, Urbach will be unable to attend this year, but Wackwitz is confirmed and very probable artist Prof. Paul Herbert will be in attendance and we are awaiting confirmation from Baker.

I will be reaching out to them to have a repeat prize in custom piece for each winner; working on some participation trinkets as well.

What time will the 4/28 event start?

Tentatively aiming for 7pm for 04/28 gathering, just awaiting confirmation we will have product to Draft. If not we will still have a social gathering for games and drinks.

Post updated to reflect artists in attendance

Fairfield Inn by Marriott is another hotel option I know a few people are staying at, 2440 Maryland Rd, Willow Grove, PA 19090

Couple updates
-There will be Top of Clan prizes and Top 4 altered cards, unique art piece for Winner of each event
-Due to some trash talking on our committee group, Friday night will be a gathering of EE and Draft games (if people bring product). Looking at this being in the brewpub right underneath Schmucki's house. Guy opens whenever he feels like it so making a special request

I can bring a box each of Thunderous Acclaim and Evil Portents...I still haven't actually played an Evil Portents draft!

Also, what constitutes a Clan for Top of Clan prizes? :)

Awesome! Shadowlands, Ninja, and all major clans (even Mantis and Spider, hehe) will have top of clan for prizes in both events. I've got something different for Imperial if someone plays that and Ronin/Toturi's Army, etc, I'll have to get clever with.

Hey guys. We made a podcast and we did a little shout out to this event. Please give us a listen.

Link is posted in this thread!

Thanks to you all for hyping the event!

Images of top of clan prizes will be up next week!

For Friday night gathering:
