Is Starting Scum Worth It?

By Elliphino, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey there, seeking your advice.

I'm happy with my rebels and imperials right now, however, I have a compulsion to buy stuff, or at least think about buying stuff, so I'm wondering whether or not getting into scum might be worth it and would love to hear your opinions.

I currently have 2 Firesprays, and bought the Star Viper so that I could have, you guessed it, auto thrusters. Since I have 3 potential scum ships already, I was thinking that if I picked up the Most Wanted expansion I'd have a pretty decent little scum collection ready to go.

I probably would have pulled the trigger on that already to get some more play variety, except for a couple reasons:

  • I was never that impressed with the firespray in the first place. And while I can see the improvements to the scum firespray, are they enough to make it playable in the current meta?
  • Being mainly a rebel player, I already have Y-Wings and Z-95s. Is the play style for these ships so much different than for the rebels that it really would be a new experience to play them in scum?
  • I'm not super competitive, but I don't want to bring a knife to a gun fight. If I never expanded my collection past 2xFiresprays, 4x Z-95, 3x Y-Wings, and one Star Viper, would I be able to field a list adequate to give my more competitive pals a worthy opponent and give myself the occasional chance of winning, or at least keeping the game close?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I don't have much experience with the Firespray, so I'll let others speak to that.

The illicit slots and Scum and salvaged astromechs do allow for a different style of play for the Z-95s and scum Y Wings. I think your issue if you go the route you've laid out isn't necessarily the ships or pilots you'll have access to, but the lack of several important upgrades that are only offered in other expansions. Your prospects for wins will really depend on how good of a pilot you are and just how competitively your friends play. The top tier lists in the current meta will be a real challenge, but if you're not playing against those, your chances for close games and occasional wins are reasonable, I'd say.

If your not sure just buy most wanted and see how that works. I love my scum ships.

There are a few scum pilots that are fun. Kavil in the Y-wing is a favorite. Ndru Z-95 can be ruthless with the right upgrades and a cluster missile. And though maybe not super competitive Kath Scarlet with tail gunner and outmaneuver is really fun when it all come together. I would say adding a JumpMaster to the collection could be worth it too. It is definitely a different experience.

I'd say, given what you currently own and assuming you don't want to fall down another buying rabbit hole, don't do it, just stick to Rebels and Imperials. If you really wanted to give it a whirl, getting Most Wanted is what you'd want to start with. I'd say once you do that, though, you'll probably start talking yourself into everything else.

I keep finding ways to talk myself out of buying into S&V even though it's introduction is what got me really excited about the game originally. Nothing wrong with the faction. It is purely budget related

Meh youre better off with two jm5ks, or a jm5k and a misthunter

You run

Xizor (mindlink, virago, fire control; thrusters)

manaroo (mindlink, feedback array)

Zuckuss (mindlink, dengar, misthunter)

If your not sure just buy most wanted and see how that works. I love my scum ships.

I agree Most Wanted expansion has a ton of the upgrades I would want as scum. I have same scum ships as author of post and recently won a Punishing One in scramble. I found "Most Wanted' had most the remaining cards I would want. I'm not willing to plunk down for a Shadow Caster yet as I prefer to not buy for 3 factions and just dabble with scum. Most Wanted at least gives me things that can be used in my Rebel list if I decided to divest from Scum.

Kath Scarlet with HLC throws 4 out the front at any range, 4 out the back at range 2-3, and 5 at range 1. Throw Dengar on from a JM5K pack, and maybe the new Expertise from the U wing, and you have yourself a mean Firespray dealing a lot of damage each turn. 52 points there, so sprinkle in others to taste. Engine Upgrade is nice for repositioning value, or if you are okay with taking an evade most turns, throw Slave1 and Long Range Sensors on so you can target lock the most threatening enemy first turn. At some point in the match, you may need it, but even if you don't, Dengar gives you the rerolls anyway (you could always TL a generic on the list since Dengar only gives you 1 reroll against those, so it may be more useful). Add in two TLT thugs, and you have yourself a list. Basic and brutal.

Get the Most wanted box. Atleast you can fly Boba and Kath as viable ships then.

If you are looking for ultra competitive Scum lists then your purchase list needs to grow!!

Id say get 2 most wanted and play 4x tlt y wings with unhinged mech.

You could also just pickup a single set of the Scum pilot/ship tokens for the Firespray if you wanted to reduce your overheads (Boba/Kath list?). If you like it running them as Scum and need the cards in the Most Wanted you shouldn't be too hard done by having bought the spare set of pilots since you'll have a second Mandalorian Mercenary pilot. You can also see what other options you have out there like Bobattanni* ? (*Courtesy of a resident blogger I believe!)
