Why are the dice so expensive on amazon and where else can you buy them

By LeslieLightning, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

They are going for more than $30 used on Amazon. Is this RPG out of print? I might have to go with FATE or SAGA edition which I have the old books for.

The RPG isn't out of print, but it takes quite some time for stock to be replenished. If you're looking for just the sets of dice, try looking at an FLGS (friendly local gaming store). You could also try to go for a beginner box. They're about 30$, but they have everything you need for a beginner game, including a set of dice. Also, in the core rulebooks, there is a table near the beginning for using standard dice if you cannot acquire the FFG dice.

If you have a smart phone or tablet, you could check out FFG's dice app. It's $5 but pretty handy.

Gameslore.com in the UK has them in stock, £9.58 per pack. Shipping to the US would roughly double that, but the shipping cost per unit drops the more you order.

If you live in the States, you can track down your local game store. Barring that, try Barnes & Noble; I've found they carry them sometimes.

I think dice apps are the way to go with this system, especially as characters advance. When you're rolling eight or ten dice, having the app aggregate the results for you is priceless.

Of course, if you want to be ridiculously practical, you can buy them straight off FFG's own website, $14.95 a pack.

But if the OP is looking at Amazon Prime's free shipping...

This is assuming you are in the US: (Also you will want two sets.)

My sets are coming from the FLGS (Acronym already defined) for a hair less than on the FFG site.

As a player prepping for a very long campaign you should plan on getting 2-3 sets of dice.

Our group uses both the App and the real dice. (I actually have 5 sets right now so there's plenty for everyone at the table). I think our group prefers using the dice over the app.

The app is good, but there's something about putting together the dice pool for that critical roll, shaking them and letting the dice fall where they may.

We use the app as it does all the calculations for you in less time than it takes to add and subtract them all physically.

The app is nice for that. It can save time compared to rolling physical dice, as long as you can get the hang of operating it. I've been playing long enough that the time difference is negligible for me, and so I prefer the physical dice. But for new players it can really speed things up!

I own three of the beginner games, and do I have three sets of dice :) and the purchases were worth it to me, because I still use the beginner games to introduce new players. But if you're trying to save a few bucks, then you probably don't wanna drop the cash for the beginner games :)

I use seven sets of dice at my table. I have 6 players and 8 pcs (2 players are each also running a lower xp total sidekick npc, characters that I would be running as npcs otherwise but they are handling them instead)

This jacked up price happened last year around Christmas too, probably Christmas caused the demand to spike and only stores selling them at overly inflated prices have any left

Having started playing right at a year ago, and the dice being difficult to find then, as well, I'd say there's something to this. In addition to a potential spike in demand, we can also look at sales possibly spiking a bit due to holiday season specials in stores. For example, the nearest game store to me ran their annual "buy 2/get 1 free" sale throughout the store from Black Friday through New Year's Eve. On New Year's Eve, this is what (most of...the whole thing didn't fit) their FFG Star Wars wall (mostly minis) looked like:

Just to the left of the picture is where the RPG dice, decks, and books are. That day, there was 1 set of dice. I was there again last night. Add about 1/3 (at least) more empty pegs and shelves to what you see, and no dice. (Also unseen, they went from about a dozen each copies of Book of the Sith, Bounty Hunter Guide, Imperial Handbook, and Jedi Path to 1 copy of BHG. Also, their current stock of Force and Destiny materials consists of one copy each of Nexus of Power and Keeping the Peace. I believe all of the CRB's were also out of stock. There was one copy of the AoR Beginner Game, and about 3 of the TFA BG - no others. No doubt, they were picked clean by people (like myself...I made several purchases throughout the store, not just Star Wars stuff, over the course of that month+.) taking advantage of the savings.

Based upon observations this time last year and having a reason to pay more attention during the holidays, there's just increased demand (for a variety of reasons) at the end of the year and going into the beginning of a new year, and it will take a while to replenish stock. (I'd also suggest to be prepared for replenished stock to go quickly for another month or so, as those looking in vain for the dice right now find them and grabbed them up almost as quickly as they can be put out on the shelves. That's what I experienced last year. When I finally got a pack of dice, I went back a week later, and they were sold out again.)

EDIT: Apparently, the profanity filter even censors a word that starts with "S" and rhymes with "hatched" that means "quickly grabbed" because of the slang meaning of the root word. :-/

In terms of SW dice, Amazon dealers are basically wearing Hondo costumes.

They're pirates.

The app, or ordering direct from FFG, is the way to go.

Btw I started using the WikiBuy plugin fit my laptop, very useful when shopping at Amazon. It looks when I am browsing an item on Amazon and tells me when I can get it cheaper somewhere else (it even factors in Prime free shipping).

But still, your FLGS is your best bet. Even if they're out of stock, they should be able to order them for you and call you when they're in stock. My FLGS (Uncle's Games in Tacoma) will even hold products for me if I ask them.

Along the lines of an FLGS holding stuff for you I have a *subscription* for all new ffg star wars rpg book at my FLGS, Active Imagination (Albuquerque NM). What that means is when they place their orders they *order* a copy specifically for me, and they didn't invent this arrangement just for me, a lot of other customers do the same thing, they have a stack/shelf of orders behind the register with pieces of paper with people's names on them attached to each item. Stores actually love this, it's "zero risk" sales/profit for them.
