Randolph Carter, King of Ilek-Vad question

By johnny shoes, in CoC General Discussion

Disrupt: Pay 3 to resolve an addition skill check (immediately after the initial skill check) at any story to which Randolph Carter is committed. (Limit once per phase.)

Win the skill check. Gain at that story a success token. Pay Randolph's disrupt and place a second success token? Is that correct?

That seems to be the plan. Mind you, the skil check also checks for opposition. If the opposing skill is 0, you'll get the bonus token as well, meaning Carter can win a story in one go.

That's right. Thanks Marius. Expensive but very realistic great card. FC Randolph got beat, like Hendrix covering All Along the Watchtower.

Just a minor quirk: skill check, while a widely used wording, has no reference in the rulings. A better wording would have been using the game term "Determine Success".

Also, since skill check is undefined, can Randy ability be used in conjunction with cards which force skill comparison (like Parallel Universe)?

Neutral
Parallel Universe
-
Type : Support
Cost : 1
Subtype : Environment. Attachment.
Game Text: Action: Pay 1 to attach Parallel Universe from your hand to a story card. When resolving struggles at attached story, count the total skill of all participating characters instead of the icons to determine the winner of each struggle.
Flavor text:
Illustrator: Régis Moulun
Collector's Info: The Thing From the Shore F98

The 'skill check' is part of determining succes. Parallel Universe just uses another factor when determining succes at struggles, so they don't work together.

I agree on Parallel.

If "Skill Check" -I have still found no reference on the rules of such a thing- is a subset of Determine Success, how comes the card enacts all the results of Determining Success? Or better: Determine Success makes players put two tokens, skill comparison doesn't.

Sorry for the thread necromany but I thought this would be better here (for one stop shopping) than starting a new thread:

If Carter is unapposed does that also mean he can win a story in one go? In other words, can Carter trigger his skill check ability even if unopposed?

I think so. The skill check is used to determine successes so I would hazard to say that if the King of Ilek-Vad was unnopposed at a fresh story that he could win a fresh story in one go.
