Another Tournament Newb

By Tysonk28, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hey guys and girls, I have played the campaign a couple times with my wife but there is a skirmish tournament coming up at the end of the month and I'm going to give it a shot. I play x-Wing so I know there are some things that are viable and some that are not but I have no idea when it comes to IA.

This is my list I made up, please rip it up and tell me what would work better or how I should be playing it most effectively.

Bantha Rider with Last Resort (I plan to charge him in and blow everything up when he finally dies)

Rancor

Weequay Pirate

Nexu

Nexu Elite

Gideon

Temporary alliance, Beast Tamer

Command Cards:

Take It Down

Jundland Terror x2

Opportunistic

Take Initiative

Rally

Close The Gap

Expose Weakness

Celebration

Urgency

Single Purpose

Tools for the Job

Crush

Toxic Dart

I know I should be using hks but I don't have return to hoth so I'm trying to substitute in weequays. Let me know what you think, Thanks!

I just picked up return to hoth so hks are back on the table. Let me know what you guys think.

What else do you have or have access to? That would help

there are some command cards that would be useful to use, but if you don't have them, you don't have them. There's nothing wrong with the list or any list for that matter, prepare to get pummeled, but that's part of learning how to play. My experience playing against campaigners, is that they know the rudimentary rules but really don't know how to play skirmish, skirmish is different than the campaign, tourney skirmish is different than regular skirmish in that now there are extra rules, time limits, etc.

learning how and when to play a command card, what figures to activate when and which figures to target first is just part of the game and that takes experience. That being said, prepare to have fun. I've some of my funnest games where I lost or didn't have a chance but took some figures down with me.

HK and Weequay perform the same purpose mid to long range shooting with variation control due to the rerolls.

Command Cards:
Take It Down maybe swap this out for Negation from your Hoth set. Its hard for Gideon to stay adjacent to anybody

Jundland Terror x2

Opportunistic

Take Initiative

Rally

Close The Gap

Expose Weakness I find this difficult to use as well, some of the Hunter cards like Assassinate or Heightened reflexes or Primary Target might work better

Celebration

Urgency

Single Purpose

Tools for the Job

Crush

Toxic Dart

I currently have:

Twin Shadows

Return to Hoth

Jabbas Realm

Luke

Han Solo

chewbacca

Saboteurs

Captain Terro

Leia

Obi-Wan

Bantha Rider

Boba Fett

General Weiss

Hired Guns

Ig88

Kayne somos

R2D2/C3PO

Rebel Troopers

Royal Guard Champion

I'll probably pick up some more stuff too.

have to disagree with buckero0 on Take it down. If its worth taking with anything its HKs or pirates (havent played them yet) since they tend to sit in the back shooting and gideon doesnt have to really move far if any. In the current map rotation you can get good shots (especially focused) from every deployment zone. Not saying it's a must have, but I've used it many times to take down stronger figures

i dunno why their is any debate over take it down, it should be replaced with assassinate.

Last resort is not consistent and its very easy to avoid.

Always, if you dead set on a bantha / rancor list i would suggest this.

Rancor

bantha

jabba or temp alliance, gideon and c3po

E tusken raiders ( more jungland terror options)

then 8 points left possible options

e weequay / beast tamer

e nexu/beast tamer/ dev schemes

r hk

2 r nexu or greedo

When you figure out your list, can work on the cmd cards.

Okay so I changed up some stuff, I'm going with

Rancor

Bantha Rider

Elite Weequays

Elite Tusken Raiders

C3PO

Gideon

Temporary Alliance

Beast Tamer

I'm going to swap out take it down for Assasinate. Hopefully I can keep my weequays alive long enough to use it.

I'm also going ditch expose weakness for Planning

That's actually a list I'd considered taking to Regionals. Start with the Bantha to soften up the opposition and make a few kills, then follow up with the Rancor. Tuskens grab objectives, and focused eWeequay keep up a steady stream of damage. I wish you the best of luck, it's a great list if you run it right!

Thanks for the advice on how to play it. I'm not expecting to win any games but I hope I don't get stomped every single time haha. I'll let you guys know how it goes. If any one else has any suggestions or advice feel free to let me know. Thanks!

so for that list i would go for cmd cards

survival instincts

ferocity

crush

assassinate

jundland x2

negation

price on their heads (<very useful now, dump it on a low point card and it takes em outta the fight)

1 point left maybe jump jets or primary target or focus or tough luck

element o surprise

planning

take int

opportunistic

the u got a few options for the rest o 0's

positoning adv / deadeye/ urgency/celebration

Its pretty decent list 2 and here are few tips.

resist the urge to send that bantha in all alone. its not that super tanky.

The rancor can be super tanky. So use it to soak then send the bantha to clean up.

focus on e tusken is also very good

good luck^^

Thanks again for the advice guys. I lost my games but I felt like I had a shot if I played a little smarter.

The maps were pretty tight which made maneuvering a little tough with two massive figures. There were a few times in my first game where I blocked my smaller figures from moving. All in all it was a great experience and it definitely won't be my last tournament.

Glad to hear you had a good time, Tysonk! Getting used to massive figures isn't really quickly. When I started playing with the Bantha Rider, I had to study deployment zones to figure out the best place to put everybody. Next time you play, you'll have it figured out I'm sure!
