Cost of Lightsabers

By Seam, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello!

As Edge of the Empire is the only rulebook yet published in Germany, and my players don't speak english that well and so we only use localized rulebooks, my questions are:

Are Force and Destiny characters supposed to have a lightsaber as a starting equipment? If not, are lightsabers as expencieve as they are in EotE (10,000 credits if I remember correctly and rare and outlawed?). How are Force and Destiny characters supposed to get a lightsaber if they can't buy one?

Thanks for any help.

The cost of assembling the hilt is pretty trivial, the costly part is the crystal. Lightsabers are not default starting equipment (although there is an option for an advanced start for knight level play that does include a lightsaber and a bunch of XP).

Ideally, characters would embark on a quest/journey to find a lightsaber crystal, not merely buy one.

No, the PCs were not meant to have full lightsabers be available as starting gear, provided they are built as regular starting characters. The closest they can get is a training lightsaber (cost of 400 credits).

Now, that said, if the PCs are starting out as Knight Level (finish spending XP in character creation as normal, then add an additional 150 XP which is treated as adventure XP), then the option of starting with a basic lightsaber is available, as Knight Level PCs get the choice of a basic lightsaber or an additional 9000 credits (on top of the credits they would normally get to start with).

As for how they otherwise get one... short answer is they earn it. The PCs will have to go hunting/questing for lightsaber crystals, and once they obtain those they'd need to find/receive the knowledge of how to build a lightsaber. Once they've fulfilled those requirements, the building process is either very simple (FaD core rulebook just requires a skill check to get parts for the hilt and no roll for assembly) or complicated (as detailed in Endless Vigil).

Speaking from experience as both player and GM, it is far more satisfying to have earned your lightsaber crystal and then built the lightsaber yourself than to just simply have a fully-functional 'saber handed off to your character.

I do not know if thy are given at character creation but they are still considered restricted and are still quite expensive in Force and Destiny.. these are the costs in the book

Basic Lightsaber - Lightsaber dam 6 crit 2 Engaged enc1 hp5 ® 9,300 rarity 10 Breach 1, Sunder
Double-Bladed Lightsaber - Lightsaber dam 6 crit 2 Engaged enc2 hp 4 ® 18,600
rarity10 Sunder, Unwieldy 3, Breach 1, Linked 1,

Lightsaber Pike - Lightsaber dam 6 crit 2 Engaged enc 3 hp 3 ® 9,600 rarity10 Breach 1. Cumbersome 3, Defensive 1. Sunder

Shoto - Lightsaber dam5 crit 2 Engaged enc 1 hp 3 ® 9,300 rarity10 Accurate

Training Lightsaber - Lightsaber dam 6 - Engaged enc 1 hp 5 400, rarity 6 Stun Damage

Looks like a basic lightsaber is 9300 creds, not likely a character could buy one right away and getting caught with one would land you in prison for sure.

In Force and Destiny there are 2 alternative options to a Lightsaber which starting PC's can actually afford; a Training Lightsaber and an Ancient Sword.

Thank you all for the answers!

Last question: Can characters find (a) crystal(s) and/or lightsaber (parts) in the so far published adventures from FFG?

The adventure in the Core and GM screen provides chances to obtain crystals.

The parts to make a hilt cost between 300 and 600 credits and can come from the local junk shop

Thank you all for the answers!

Yeah there are tons of crystals in Chronicles of the Gatekeeper.

Yes.

The Beta adventure (meant for starting PCs) has lightsaber crystals offered as a rewards. Though they aren't quite as good as Ilum crystals, they still work pretty darn well since they're Damage 6/Breach 1 weapons.

The GM Screen adventure "Hidden Depths" also has lightsaber crystals (called rubat but mechanically are the same as Ilum crystals) as the primary focus/reward.

The core rulebook adventure has a sidebar which includes the option of providing the group two basic lightsabers as a reward, and is again meant to work as a starting adventure for a group of freshly-made PCs.

It should also be noted that in Nexus of Power, one of the Modular Encounters is a quest for lightsaber crystals, as part of the Force Useres' Jedi trials, which can essentially be done on any planet that has native kyber crystal deposits, be they Ilum Crystals, Mephite (or one of the other Adegan) crystals (from Ossus), or any of the other types throughout the galaxy.
