please settle this for us .... (specialisations)

By drallcome, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi all

A player chose to specialize in handweapons and parry with hand weapons , after reading the Errata it stated that a specialitions do not affect active defense action cards. therefore the pc would not get to use a fortune die when useing the "parry " action card correct ?

Also would they get a bonus fortune die when useing any of the melee strike cards ? it would seem that if they cannot use specialisations for active defence cards then they would also not be able to use them for offense either .

One last thing, however if the PC spent advances to put a fortune die into say STR then he would recieve a bonus die to all his attacks correct ? because they are based on STR.

Thank you guys for any helpp you can offer me .

Think it would depend on the situation and the skill. If you specialised in hand weapons then you would get a bonus when attacking with that weapon, but not if you had the 'parry with hand weapons' specialisation. In the latter case I would probably allow the bonus on a defense without the Parry card though. I think all they are saying is that the parry etc specialisations do not interact with those particular defense cards, but don't see why weapon specialisations would not add to more general attack cards where appropriate.

Fortune die to Strength is a permanent addition to the dice pool so should add in this case.

The Errata is really just a clarification that those skill specializations like Dodge, under Coordination I believe, has nothing at all to do with the Dodge card or dodging in combat. If a boulder trap was going to crush you and you had to make a coordination roll to dodge it... then your specialization would kick in like normal.

An easier way to look at IMO is that specialization work when you are building a dice pool. You don't build a dice pool when you dodge in combat. You are adding dice to someone elses dice pool, and being trained might allow you to add another. Just read the active defense card as it is written. On your turn when you are making a melee attack you are building a dice pool and your specialization in hand weapons or in strength would add in to your pool.

That means whenever he parries he adds an extra black die to his enemy's pool, or at least that was my groups ruling.

As to the second question, we said yes it does, for 2 reasons. a) it s warhammer, the game has always been about dealing damage, not damage mitigation on tabletop and in the rpgs b) because the book says that melee weapons is a specialization, not any specific named card.

On the last, yes, all hand to hand attacks get the fortune die. Just like if he put in in Agi he would get it to all ranged attacks

Thank you guys for helping me out so much , this is truly a great community that has made it easier to get into the pen and paper game . (which has surprised me in being much much better than any video game )
