Epic ships as obstacles in standard tournament play

By Budgernaut, in X-Wing

I'm all for the inclusion of new rocks/debris, or even new obstacle types (I'll eat my hat if we don't get an Ion Cloud at some point), but using the Epic ships as obstacles just doesn't feel right to me. It's too much of a regular-shaped 'wall' than I think standard X-Wing is designed for, and I cannot say I enjoyed the one game I've played using the rule.

At first wall but the rocks/debris act more like a wall since flying through them often has the same effect. They are a little more hollow than a wall.

Also when looking at games like Rouge Leader often ships were the only terrain in those space missions. So to me it feels less like a wall.

And, as pointed out by somebody upthread, the rules huge ships as obstacles only apply if your base overlaps the huge ship. Flying through them incurs no penalty, making the huge ship obstacles decidedly less wall-y.

I think the wall comment was referring to visibility. The asteroids are flat pieces of cardboard, so they don't inhibit your ability to see everything on the map. With the epic ships, they do block your line of sight to ships on the other side of it. If you are at a packed tournament where you cannot walk around the table, this could be very annoying when trying to judge where a ship can move to. To me it's not a game-killer, but I can see how it could be annoying.

True but you can also take the model off the base and just leave the base as the obstacle. I've seen many games where ships are removed form their base both the epic ships and the standard. Also it is not like someone will mistake the huge ship tile for a standard ship in competitive play.

So wouldn't it be cool if we had punchboard tokens in the shapes of these ships for use as obstacles? The tokens would be shaped more interesting than just a rectangle (so less of a feeling of a blocky wall in space), and it wouldn't make maneuvering over obstacles any more complicated than it already is with asteroids and debris tokens.

What about the middle section of the epic ship? There is a gap between the two plastic bases. How you accurately tell whether your ship is overlapping that part or not, when the epic cardboard template is not at the same level as your ship's base?

I always wondered why we as players cant leave the ships that are destroyed as debris where they were destroyed +1 in the direction they last traveled.or at the very least +1 forward in whatever direction they are facing currently before they died.

I think that would allow different strategies to pop up, to use your death even as a possible block if you know you are prob going to lose something. I know if I was flying a X-wing, and i knew I was about to be blown up, id try to at least crash into a enemy on the way out.

Going forward, FFG could include a "debris" object that represents the ship after its demise.

It's fairly easy. The gap has a section that extrudes to about the exact same size as the width of the base so you really are not going to have a problem. However if you insist on taking a vernier caliper to determine if it overlaps or not then you might be a problem to play a game of X-wing with.

People with epic ships as obstacles, count as 3 obstacles, ignore Initiative and always place first unless both player bring epic ships then follow initiative rules for placement. Problem solved

Also obstacles that came with Epic ships may be used, but count as two obstacles, Now I can use my other obstacles too. Yeah!

Is this a house rule or is it in the huge ship rules?

This is a house rule, but it works perfectly.

While we're on the topic, what do we think about adding mine tokens and epic-sized debris?

When you mention mines, are you referring to the ones from the TFA core set?

I mean Proximity Mine tokens, Cluster Mine tokens, Conner Net tokens (and any other bombs that remain in place until a ship hits them). That is, you could select a mine token as one of your "obstacles".

I have played with mines instead of asteroids before. We use a button on a small ship stand, but the damage rules for Proximity Mines. It's a lot of fun. BUT, tractor beams become a LOT more dangerous.
