Why I'm not excited for the new epic scum ship.

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

Well, I am not that excited either. I don't play Epic to care about what the big ship does and the new Scyk does not seem that impressive either. Maybe it will have some cool pilots, but I think the Scyk is far from viable in tournament play, especially with the Light Scyk title. You pay 12 pts minimum for a 2 hull 1 shield ship that is always critted (so it is a 1 hull ship if you get Direct Hit).

Now I wonder what will FFG put in the pack to make us buy it if we want to play Scum competitively. :D

I only have 1 piece of advice for anyone who plays X-wing and that is PLAY EPIC!

Honestly the best way to play the game for fun.

You can tell him he needs to play epic, or that he needs to suck it up, but I feel for this guy. If you are a player who, for whatever reason, prefers to focus on 100 point play specifically, it is easy to see how it can be a major annoyance to pay a large amount of money for a few upgrade cards because they are tied to a hunk of plastic you don't have a use for. I don't think it's awful for someone to wish there was a cheap way to get the valuable upgrade cards which, if the past shows us anything, the epics almost always have some of the most valuable in the game.

That is probably why FFG puts them in the huge ships, to get you to buy them when they would otherwise have a much smaller market for the huge ships.

I understand the complaint, but this is what they've done for the other factions before so it makes sense that they'd do it for Scum.

Of course, if you are not playing in a tournament and are just "flying casual" with friends, it's not hard to accept a proxy card rule. I frequently play where proxying upgrades are permitted, especially in cases where the upgrade itself is cost-prohibitive (Palp from the Raider) or it's a case of the player isn't sure they will like the list long-term, and the only reason to buy an expansion is "for these cards". Let them give it a try without making the big investment, and then see how they feel about it.

If you are playing tournaments, sorry but I don't feel bad for you. The Empire and Rebels had to suffer that, you can suffer it too. It is what it is, how FFG makes a good amount of money.

I really wish that they would make the huge ship as obstacle rule legal for tournament play so everyone can get more use out of their huge ships, even if they don't play epic.

I think that's a fantastic idea, from a marketing aspect. I'd love to see huge ships dotted throughout a tournament room.

I can't hear you over all the humming Scum buzz....

I never get the chance to play epic and that is not going to change. Another epic ship to me is like a new Imperial Assault expansion, totally useless cause I don't play that game and never will. Scum is my favorite faction and the Scyk is a great ship. From my perspective, packing scyk cards with epic is just like bundling a new X-wing expansion with an uber-deluxe $60 special edition monopoly! :(

Honestly I think this is all it would take for players focused on competitive and tournament play to be less upset about feeling they need to make the purchase. Just give them something they can use the massive model for in standard play.

And don't get me wrong. I understand FFG is a business, and that including 1 or 2 upgrades that are phenomenal in standard play is part of the way these things sell. Doesn't mean it has to be an enjoyable experience for players who don't get in any epic play.

I'm hoping that once we jave epic ships for all factions thay FFG starts supporting Epic play more. The laxk of official store kits ir official events for epic play hurts it immensely.

Epic ships make very fun obstacles for casual play. They are just fun toys and look great in my lighted cabinet!

PROOF!

I said this once and was scolded for not using third party marketeers, such as eBay vendors. I think they missed the point I was attempting to make about purchasing products from the manufacture or authorized dealers an not having to rely or market pricing for 'valuable' cards. One of the reasons I began playing X-Wing is because it wasn't a collectible game with rare cards. Perhaps that statement, while correct, was a bit too broad.

Yeah, that would be awesome.

I just pre-ordered mine. Now, I'll have to settle in for the long wait for it to come to my doorstep. I do hope we see even more Epic ships announced this year.

Spending $20 on eBay to get Jabba or whatever the must-have card might be is a much better deal than buying the expansion itself. It's annoying, but there's no reason to buy a $60 paper weight. I have C-3PO, the Emperor, the TIE advanced fix, etc, and I've never purchased an epic ship.

This is even easier since you don't need the M3-A material.

Would that be the X-wing fix? :P

A previous attempt at it.

1- I already own 4 epic ships and I have yet to play an epic game.

Why haven't you played an Epic game? You own enough ships to build both lists and you just need to find people to play with. I bought the CR-90 and wanted to use it. I signed up for a local gaming convention and ran a 200 pt vs 200 pt game that used the CR-90...just because I wanted to find a reason for using it! I had a blast and met one of my better X-wing friends who had never tried the game before (J-bot).

If you want to play Epic, I've found it doesn't usually take that much effort to find someone that wants to play a game. I know a lot of people that have barely touched theirs and are looking for an excuse to use it. It just takes a little bit of effort to plan ahead for it.

It's not that way for everyone, if i asked anyone in my community if they wanted to play epic, they'd just say epic is dead and then starts playing the 100 point "dogfight"

Do you ask them at the game store on game night? Or do you post to the FB group or whatever social media group your local area has? You get much better results if you post it before the night you want to play. I know some people don't have a big game group and you are limited with what you have, but sometimes it just takes a little bit of effort.

I've also found it's a good way to draw in new players. If you set it all up at the game store and people come by to take a look at things, you just throw them a few ships and get them into the game.

I know it's not always easy, but I've often seen people not even try.

Again, if you're not excited for the new Scum Epic ship, that's perfectly fine.

You don't have to buy it. If you feel like you're not getting mileage out of your existing Epic ships, that's perfectly fine as well.

Just please - for the love of the Force - don't create new threads to say so. There's already plenty of topics on the new ship on the forum. Why go through all the effort of creating a new one just to express disinterest?

Instead of making a new thread about why I am excited for the new epic ship I'll just post in this one.

1. Epic ships are awesome

2. Cinematic, mission, campaign play is awesome

3. Epic ships, like any other new ships, add increased possibilities for cinematic, mission, campaign play.

4. Epic ships look amazing on display

I hope FFG continues to release epic ships, they will probably only do so if it is profitable and packaging epic ships with good "exclusive" upgrade cards clearly sells more epic ships than not doing so making it more likely to be profitable. They should probably keep doing exactly what they've been doing until they come up with something better.

My goal this year is to go back and play as many of the missions and campaigns as I can.

I would like to play epic. But much of the playing I do is game nights or tournaments at gaming stores. Playing epic just takes so long. I have started playing more with my neighbors and friends. Hopefully I will get an epic game in soon.

I think this ship looks awesome ... and I bet it will be more fun to play then even the Gozanti.

You know, this is a problem you can solve...
