Hi, I wasn't sure which forum this question would be most appropriate for, but a good friend of mine and I want to try the game out and we plan on splitting the cost down the middle for now with 2 expansions and 1 core. Are there any extra pieces we should buy separately to make gameplay a bit easier with one core? IE extra dice, movement pieces, or tokens? Thanks
Buying 1 core for 2 players Question
From someone who has recently gotten themselves into the game, here's my half penny pinch of salt worth.
Sounds like a great starting point, don't forget to go to a local game store if possible and ask for a demo - great way to help the learning process!
You don't 'need' any extra bits apart from the core and two expansions if that's all you want at this time.
If you find you like the game, I would recommend a second core starter - the one you do not have. This will provide you both with a set of dice, movement pieces, rules etc, along with the additional ship options. Buying the dice/movement bits individually is a lot more costly than buying a second core considering you get the ships too - just keep an eye out online for cheap second hand stuff if budget is an issue.
I bought the TFA core after a demo of the game, played a few times and want to play it more. I have the newer Damage Deck and rules because of it, but missed out on the awesome Biggs + R2-D2 (which I grabbed cheap online). I'm finding that I would at least like a second set of dice just for myself, let alone the second player but waiting for a cheap set online! In addition, a second set of movement pieces would be very helpful. Above and beyond this - I'm buying the expansions that I like and ignoring the ones with ships I dislike (despite them providing useful upgrade cards etc) - since I'm not a competition player I can proxy them when needed.
Good luck!
A buddy and I started out the same way. We played one game amd a few minutes in we said to eachother, "We need more ships." So we split the cost of another Core Set. The we each started our own collections.
If buying one core then I recommend the Force Awakens core set. The included rulebook will more closely reflect the way the way the game is currently played. There are some outdated rule concepts in the original core set. If you get that core set firstt, then download the newest rule documents from FFG's website and play with the newest rules. If you find yourself leaning toward Rebels, then you will eventually want an Original Core Set for R2-D2. (Other people will tell you Biggs is another reason, but stay off that crutch if you can.)
For your two expansions, get whatever appeals to you. That said, you'll find many ships prefer upgrades that come in multiple other expansions. The most ready-to-use single expansions for Empire and Rebels are the First Order TIE and K-wing.
Edited by jmswoodI'd say there's no need to buy anything else. Extra dice and movement templates are nice to have, but you'll get a better value from a second core then you will buying them separately.
In my experience it is very convenient to "field" on the table two sets of rulers plus 6 reds and 6 greens. One old and one TFA basic sets are a very good starting point.
When you say expansions do you mean small base, large base, or multi-ship packs? If you are each planning on buying only a small base ship expansion then MSRP wise, there really isn't a better option. If you are talking about one of the other expansions, I would highly recommend that you pick up the "other" Core instead. This way you each get your set of tokens, dice, rulers, etc. and you then trade ships. This way you each end up with 2 different types of ships that are still similar enough in both appearance and flying style.
