Scattered thoughts from the Seattle Regional.

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Last Saturday was the Seattle Regional. Rather than a match-by-match battle report, I thought I'd just post scattered observations.

1) MY LIST:

"Duchess" (23)

Adaptability (0)

Lightweight Frame (2)

Adaptive Ailerons (0)

"Omega Leader" (21)

Juke (2)

Comm Relay (3)

Maarek Stele (TIE Defender) (35)

Juke (2)

TIE/x7 (-2)

"Wampa" (14)

Total: 100

I wanted four ships who could all contribute without anything falling apart if one of them died. That was one of the biggest drivers for Maarek over Vessery (Vessery just becomes a Juking Defender once Omega dies). It did well, going 4-2 with an 700 MOV (good for 27th out of a field of 110).

I also really wanted to use Duchess with the Sterling Archer alt-art card, which I had printed out on photo paper and was handing out to everyone I played against. The ship itself was decent, but feels fragile despite the 4 hull. It's basically like flying Interceptors pre-Autothrusters, but you're more vulnerable to 2-dice primaries like Manaroo.

Maarek doesn't get much love as a Defender pilot, but he was absolutely clutch. He was able to fish out a Blinded Pilot crit against a DeciVader (see below), and gave me a Thrust Control Fire over a Direct Hit which let me double-stress a Sabine-laden Lothal before she could bomb me.

2) MY FAVORITE OPPOSING LIST:

Captain Oicunn (42)

Expertise (4)

Rebel Captive (3)

Darth Vader (3)

Gunner (5)

Engine Upgrade (4)

"Quickdraw" (29)

Expertise (4)

Fire-Control System (2)

Sensor Cluster (2)

Lightweight Frame (2)

Special Ops Training (0)

Total: 100

Oicunn was SUCH A PAIN, and I look forward to cribbing this build later. I narrowly won this match, but it was only because I was able to focus everything on Oicunn and rolled a crit with Maarek that fished out a Blinded Pilot crit in the first round. Even with that, he was a wrecking ball of pain. He scored ramming hits on Wampa, Omega Leader (who had already been Vadered into a Console Fire, forcing me to burn my action to put out the fire instead of replacing his Evade token), and a killing blow on Duchess. Expertise works beautifully on Oicunn here, giving you two Focused shots when you ram, or a fully modified shot when you don't. Quickdraw also worked well, with fully modified shots and an evade token for defense, but Oicunn was a star.

3) CRAZIEST MOMENT OF MY GAMES:

Omega Leader and Maarek had both lost their shields, and were the only ships left against a wounded Lothal Rebel with Sabine, Hera, and Cluster Mines. My opponent pushed forward with a 2-straight that put him dangerously close to the edge, but allowed him to drop clusters on both of them. Maarek rolled one crit, pulling a Direct Hit and getting Sabined into dust. Omega rolls two more, putting him at one hull before S-Looping out of Autoblaster range. Unfortunately, the next round forced the Lothal off the map, but the gambit almost worked.

4) CRAZIEST MOMENT WITNESSED:

Mutual destruction between two players. They then tied the first two Final Salvos, forcing A THIRD FINAL SALVO. This is what competitive X-Wing is all about.

Overall, the tourney was a blast, and every one of my opponents were awesome.

Except for the ones who beat me. Those guys were jerks. THEY KNOW WHY.

(it's because they beat me.)

((okay, no, they were also cool.))

I heard about the Oicunn list at the tournament and wondered what it was about. The tournament was really well run by well organized TO's but no youtube videos or list summaries posted, Pacific NW has such an active X-wing community it'd be nice to see more online videos of events here.

I actually came in 28th just behind you ~695 MOV. I didn't face any TIE Strikers in the tournament but the next day in the scramble I faced countdown. I had left countdown alone for first half of the game until I slowly realized I better start using my TLT's on him before it was too late!

Seattle Regionals list summaries are available now Right Here!

With Cluster Mines, you only suffer 1 damage for either hits or crits, right? So you shouldn't have pulled that Direct Hit, correct? That being the case, wouldn't that have impacted your MOV and possibly standing?

You are correct, and we both forgot about that change (the curse of card changes being issued through errata).

Though on that basis, I have to assume my opponent would have waited and used Sabine to finish off Omega Leader instead. That's only a nine point swing in MOV. I suppose there's a chance that he could have used Sabine on Maarek anyway, letting him and Omega both finish with one hull remaining, but that still wouldn't have pushed me into the Top 16.

I'm pretty sure that whatever maneuver I had dialed in for Maarek when he died would have put him out of Autoblaster range, which is the only other thing that could have impacted that game. A two-hit Autoblaster shot after getting hit with that bomb would have killed him, which would have flipped that match to a loss.

"Quickdraw also worked well, with fully modified shots and an evade token for defense"

Maybe i'm missing something, but how does QD gets an evade token?

With Sensor Cluster you can change a blank to a evade result with a focus, but the TIE/sf doesn't have evade action...

If you roll a blank, it's as good as an evade token.

I think that's what he meant. With the Sensor cluster and no need to use the focus when attacking, it's easy to just think of the focus token as an evade.

Yeah, that's what I had meant. It guarantees that you'll be able to use that focus token to modify at least one die, unless you roll all evades anyway.
