Second-guessing a location

By Nytwyng, in Game Masters

Need a little feedback for a potential location.

At least one of my players reads the forums, so I'm using the spoiler tag and trusting that any players of The Raggedy Edge won't peek inside. It'll ruin your fun if you do! ;)

So, we're coming up on the climax of one character's "treasure hunt" arc. Long story short, they'll need to get three items ("keys") from three different worlds to learn the location of the treasure. They were scattered 4500 years ago to worlds and specific locations that were perceived to be ones that would stand the test of time.

1 - This key is in the keeping of one of the Elder Houses, under the seal of protection of the royalty. This will primarily consist of social encounters to establish the player's bonafides to take possession of the key (unless they decide to break in to steal it, of course).

2 - This one's on Kuat (hence the Kuat planet sheet I made and posted recently ;) ). But, there will be some snags, as the key's gone. Turns out there's a fracker that activates if it's removed from the vicinity of where it's supposed to be without it being disabled by a droid tied to the hunt. They'll have to track it down and liberate it from the bad guys who have it.

3 - The final one is on Jedha, in the Temple of the Whills (of Temple of Kyber, as the Visual Guide calls it). Being occupied by the Empire, they'll have to infiltrate the temple. As they do, the Imperials stationed there will receive a sudden call to abandon Jedha. The idea is for the players to make their escape as the Death Star moves into position and destroys the city. This will obviously bring the campaign that's been progressing from roughly 6-9 months BBY into the timeframe of the OT.

You may have noticed that there's no planet for the first key. I was considering Alderaan, but with the final piece being on Jedha, I'm second-guessing that, thinking that it's just TOO convenient/"cute" to send them to two locations that would be inaccessible for one reason or another in the near future. Making another Elder House planet is no big deal...just looking for some additional brains on the matter.

Thanks for the input!

Number three is still a little on the cute side. Have you considered a location like Ossus from the Nexus of Power sourcebook for the F&D line?

Yeah, 3's a little on the cute side, but I'd like to get SOME use out of a great location, and it gives the group a very explicit, very dramatic statement of what point we've reached. If there was a habit of the group always dropping in on moments from the big or small screen, I wouldn't even consider it. I'm also thinking it might serve as a nice swerve - not them being there, but planning an infiltration, getting in, and having the Empire say, "We're out ," clearing the way to get the final key with little/no trouble and moving on to the actual final destination in that session, when they'll probably assume it would be separate. (As it is, I'm plotting out all four destinations in advance, in case they make short work of getting the keys...what's in mind as 3-4 sessions could end up condensed into 1 if they're on the ball.)

I'm working on a write up of this storyline to post once it's all wrapped up, and #3 will be a more generic location that befalls some other horrible fate to make it agnostic in terms of placement on the timeline; there will be a sidebar stating what was used in our session, in the event anyone running it chooses to do the same.

That's further down the line, tied into another character's story. ;)

How about Hoth except when they get there it reveals a long ruined complex with a broken statue set behind a stone circle with a pentagram with three holes for the keys to be inserted.

Once inserted an ancient hologram reveals the statue was that of an ancient Sith Guardian that genuflects before gesturing to the heavens where once was a dome depicting the skies of ancient Hoth.

The light show if recorded and they have an archaeologist involved will reveal the ultimate destination as Taris...

Searching there will reveal a similar complex long built over but they kept the planetarium and the weird stone circle with holes for the keys intact and anyone familiar with Taris or their advertisements will recognise the planetarium as remarkably similar to the ruin on Hoth.

Please note if they never went to Hoth they wouldn't know of a link to Taris!

Hope that helps!

The final destination where the keys are inserted is already set pretty much in stone.

Appreciate the suggestion, though. Tucking it away for a different campaign on the horizon.

For #1, what if the location is Serreno, and the old family belongs to Count Dooku?

Or maybe Eriadu, and the Tarkin family?

Eriadu crossed my mind, but I wouldn't say it was one of the Elder Houses. I've dipped into (the poor side of) the Tarkin family already, too.

But Serenno...hmmm...wheels turning.

Thanks, Brad.

Always glad to help! :)

Not to mention, it will result in a new planet page for you to yoink. ;)

That is a strong positive motivation! :)

I was also going to suggest Serreno.

That was fast! Thanks! :)

I've got a pretty good routine for them down, even when there's a fair amount I have to make up.

Lianna from 'Mission to Lianna' in the old WEG adventures is a nice planet for one - it would make for a very different location from the other two, which is also nice - lets your folks exercise politics, social skills, and such.
