Desperately need help ranking my lists!

By gennataos, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I got sucked into the game only a few months ago, but my collection has grown at a ridiculous rate. I love having all of the options available, but feel overwhelmed at the same time. I'd like to narrow myself down to maybe 3 lists to play on a regular basis and really learn them. Would you guys mind ranking the lists I've built? Feel free to make suggestions as well!

I've limited myself to only Rebels and core sets, aside from a StarViper I got for Christmas (yay, Autothrusters!). The only Rebel expansions I'm missing are huge ships, the YT-2400 and the HWK-290, but I'm willing to get any of them aside from the Tantative. I play mostly with friends, but would like to jump into an occasional local store tournament from time to time (haven't yet).

I don't think there can be a definitive ranking of squads, since they are all based on different metas really. For instance, Corran + Miranda seems the strongest in sheer power/ship capability, but in a TLT meta Miranda + Poe might be "better". If you were doing a tournament with just these squads as participants, I'd expect Corran + Miranda to win simply by being in my opinion, the most well-rounded squad with the fewest "bad matchups". Lists 2-4 are all pretty similar, and would come down to player skill in my opinion. Whichever one of those lists you are most comfortable flying should theoretically be the "best". Again, this list would vary quite drastically depending on what kind of a meta you are facing, just keep that in mind. What is your local meta? It would be much easier to rank these squads if I had some knoledge on what you will be facing.

Thanks for the reply!

My current meta is just me and my friends, mostly one friend. He plays Imperials and Scum, not usually net-decking. We both got into X-Wing at the same time and both struggle with narrowing down what we want to fly, which usually means we fly many things poorly. I'm from the St. Louis area, but haven't gotten involved with the local scene enough to speak to it.

Well what does your friend usually fly? If its a lot of turrets, Poe's Autothrusters might make him better than Corran if you're trying to decide between Miranda + Corran or Miranda +Poe. Are there a lot of high damage ships, such as a YV-666 with Zuckuss? In that case, Rey or a Ghost would probably be a "better" option since they rely on health instead of agility to defend themselves. If its a bunch of aces that your friend plays (Soontir, Vader, ect.) then whichever one of your lists with the pilot skill advantage would probably be the "best" in that scenario. At the end off the day though, I'm a firm believer that if you fly what you're comfortable with and have a valid tactical plan on how to beat your opponents list before the match starts then you will always have a chance no matter what you play or how "powerful" your list is.

He really bounces around a lot, probably more than me. He's flown BroBots, Imperial aces, Party Bus, etc. I don't think he ever took lists verbatim off the net, but he's versed enough to know what they're called. He just got a pile of stuff for Christmas, so his last few lists have been a mix...Decimator with and ace or two...Dengar with Talonbane.

I guess I'm less concerned about what he's flying and trying to counter it and more interested in what you talked about before...what are generally more consistent lists, fewest weaknesses across the board. With that in mind, I'd also like to concentrate on a handful of lists which offer a lot of variety. I guess it makes sense to take similar lists and fly them back to back multiple times, see which ones "stick" for me. I just want to avoid running crap lists. I don't have a lot of opportunities to play, maybe 2-4 games a week, and it's sucks to see your game window close, having ran a list which clearly sucked from inception. ;)

You listed a lot and all of it flies very differently. X-wings are limited T-70's can be more versatile with Talon Rolls. E-Wings get some tools to work with. Your list makes Corran really offensive but he can be made more Defensive as well. A-Wings fly nothing like Either the X- or E-wings. The K wing and Arc and kind of bigger slower boats, bit forgiving to start, but can also get predictable in certain situations.

The Ghost and Falcon, big ships with a different learning curve with their larger bases. Trying to judge where a ship ends and debris and other things can be tricky. You'll learn what you like and don't. Like the reposition abilities? X-Wings, K-wings, Arcs will make you cry because there isn't repositioning options without using other upgrades to get them. A-wings and E-Wings even T-70's will be more your thing. You may find out 2 Ships doesn't do enough Damage fast enough to get you where you want to be...so now your looking for other ships... lower PS pilots to offset cost.

Biggest thing I see about your list beyond the Biggs/A wing list is a lot of high PS. It's nice but if it gets hit and burns down it can be frustrating. You'd be surprised how cheaper ships in numbers can ruin a pumped up Ace's Day when he can't deal with so much going at him at once. Keep experimenting and find you niches.

You Rebel Scum...

As has been noted "ranking" is hard... I would base your choices entirely on what you enjoy using.

Do you like characters from films? (if so use Poe / Ray or both)

Do you like aces that dart around like ninjas?

Do you enjoy the big ships?

From your lists, and reading between the lines I'd go for :

Aces - Poe & Corran

Falcon - Ray + "other" (your choice really - I like Ray & Poe personally)

Rebels - Ghost + "other" (I'd go for biggs - protecting the 0 def Ghost for a while)

I see you have K wing, I understand its good, but have never used it so cant really comment

Enjoy!

I played the first list last night. Lost twice (against Dengar and Boba Fett), but there's a learning curve involved in that list.

The first game, I got Miranda in the mix too soon and kind of stopped caring, which led me to flying Corran off the board. Lesson learned.

We immediately set up another game and I lost that largely due to just not knowing these new (to me) cards. I forgot to use Sabine's ability at least once, if not twice. Couple that with me not knowing that crits also deal damage on Cluster Mines (it explicitly calls out only hits on the card, but the FAQ adds crits as 1 damage), Boba would have died early on and I'd likely have rolled over Dengar with both my ships left. Instead, Boba chased Corran around while I managed to fly Miranda completely out of the fight. I kept running away with her, using Advanced SLAM, when I probably should have slowed my roll, taken a few hits while dealing out a few on my own. The game ended on a pretty questionable "they didn't bump, or did they???" call between Dengar and Corran, but I wasn't really bothered by that. If I'd played my list well, it wouldn't even have come to that.

I loved playing with bombs. That was a ton of fun, and I'm sure to start making a lot more use of them.
