so what about that u-wing?

By Scoundrel, in X-Wing

me and my playgroup friends have taken it for a few rides. I sort of like it. 3 red, 2 green, decent dial and a lot of customization options with systems, crew and all. So far, though, ive not seen it do a lot. It has suffered the b-wing death of focus fire until now. I think it could fill several roles but I want to build an offensive version. maybe han crew, FCS and EU? Finn maybe. But one could also build more defensive fighter with stuff like threeps, sensor jammer, artoo crew or whatever. also, with Hera it can be a weird gun turret that just stands at the board edge and covers and area. And then there's obviously the spam list but right now I want to focus on just getting use of one. idk. is it worth putting a lot of points in this ship to should it just be as lean as possible?

any builds, comments or experiences are welcomed!

I'll be running this build to test it out:

Heff w/ Gunner, Jyn, FCS, Title

Alongside 2 Rookie X-Wings and a Stresshog (for the Rogue 1 fluff)

Also got a 2nd so I really like the idea of running 2 Pathfinders both with Gunner, Tactician and FCS. With an ace alongside.

With fairly basic stats but a whole load of upgrade options, the U-Wing is a blank canvas that you can paint on the support needs of other ships. Need something to hoover stress off your Aces? Cassian pilot with Inspiring Recruit. Want to improve the defense or action economy of your fleet at low cost? Jyn and Jan on a Blue Squadron Pathfinder won't break the bank.

The U-wing is going to take some time to settle because its stats do not lend it particularly to a single excelling role. Rather it is a solid ship which can carry almost any buffs the rest of your fleet needs. Even with several upgrades, it can still be brought in below the 30-point mark which fills a useful space in the Rebel fleet.

Its main role I think is that it allows you to bring plenty of support crew without investing a lot of points in a freighter.

I love the idea of using it to carry Sabine and two sets of mines in a Galaxy Note 7 kind of list (usually 3 Ks with Cluster Mines and Sabine + other crew), I want to try that tomorrow. Haven't had too much other inspiration so far, but that comes down mostly to me not having Rey crew and my tiredness with support ships. I had my fill of that running HWKs in wave 3-4 a lot.

I haven't had a chance to run the U-wing yet, but here's the build I've been wanting to put on the table

Blue Squadron Pathfinder

Sensor Jammer

Cassian crew

Zeb crew

pivot title

anti pursuit lasers

The idea is to try and block the enemy, denying them actions but still being able to shoot them if they're in arc. Their ability to shoot back would be hampered by no actions and sensor jammer.

It does come to 32 points though, which might be a bit too much

I haven't had a lot of success with it yet so i will what to see that other say

the U isn't the difficult to figure out

as mentioned, it is a B-wing except

*1 more crew slot (Assuming B/e mod)

*large base

*much faster dial (Esp due to large base)

*most of the time, 2 agility

now 2 agility is not a big deal (good ole goddamn green dice) unless you stack them mods

so that makes building a U easy, you just gotta jam focus down its throat

don't waste time with SJ. It is expensive and oftentimes does nothing. FCS is what you almost always want on a ship with this few actions.

2nd thing you'll want/need is Rey crew. Rey makes the U. That's a free on demand focus whether you get stressed, go over an obstacle, or bump (all of which you'll be doing a lot; large base). The amount of power she gives the ship is so incredible that it actually feels like an entirely different animal altogether

FCS and rey together already give you a chuncky combat ship regardless of what else you have it doing. You kind of need this, because the U isn't cheap enough that you can have it putzing around with minimal mods and plinking off of enemy green dice. it needs to do work , not just support (ie, it ain't Ahsoka)

then you just add Jyn and El Heffe (Heff was made for Jyn); done

Cassian is also really fun, I've found. You'll be using his ability on anything with PTL/experimental interface/r3-a2 or red maneuvers (which, considering no defenders, is a lot of things) regardless of if your opponent brings asajj or not

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v4!s!234:140,36,-1,218,201:47:-1:;175:18,-1,78,204:-1:15:;9:135,-1,-1,69:21:-1:&sn=Home%20for%20U

also found that experimental interface Jyn Kanan (With FCS) is a surprisingly powerful bastard. Cassian gives him an incredible freedom of movement/action by slapping off the Ei stress

Played this list last night and did alright at a casual game.

Cassian + FCS + Jan Ors + Inspiring Recruit + Title + adapatibility (for zero points and not using his EPT slot, I figured why not)

Gray Squadron pilot + TLT + BTL-A4 + R3A2

PS9 Poe + Predator + R5P9 + IA + Black One

What's better than a stresshog? A stresshog that can do his red moves and therefore have a much larger dial possibility. Cassian + recruit clears the hog's stress when he locks down a ship with stress, and with FCS and 3 dice can dish some damage himself. Poe is a heavy lifter, moving after the rest and lining up a shot on whichever poor soul lost their actions this turn following an encounter with stresshog. And if anybody is in need of some extra protection, Jan is there for converting a focus to evade (which I mainly used on the Uwing itself). I picked the gray squad over gold just to get in before the opponent's generics (which are usually PS2)

Sure, it's a fun list with a little synergy, and it probably won't win any competitive events, but it works for what I did.

I've really enjoyed this:

Cassian Andor (27)
Snap Shot (2)
Enhanced Scopes (1)
Extra Munitions (2)
Han Solo (2)
Sabine Wren (2)
Proximity Mines (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Pivot Wing (0)
Total: 43
its a fantastic ship with a lot of offensive potential. Not many see that Prox mine coming... usually right on their heads! The enhanced scopes is great for dropping it where I want to. :) Usually good for 3-4 damage.
The tactic is simple, boost, snap shot, bomb, target lock, flip. rinse and repeat.

Also, this list started as a rebel swarm leader jank

But kanan started carrying it and winning even when swarm leader ended up never procing

So now

Cassian (rey, fcs, gunner, pivot; expert handling)

kanan (fcs, autoblaster, jyn, chopper, experimental)

refit prototype pilot

A is almost entirely there to keep kanam from being blocked, but if you can block with him the little bugger can really pull his weight

I need more suggestions : )

My Heff build (however crazy) would be:

Heff Tobber:

Enhanced Scopes 1

Jyn Erso 2

Sabotuer 2

Pivot Title 0

APL 2

Yes, I want to try Saboteur on him. No, it may not actually work still lol

wow, thats an insane build : ) I kanda like it.

i played my first game with it today - the U wing build i had up above, with enhanced scopes instead of sensor jammerpaired with an Braylen Stramm and a just for fun luke skywalker build that i wanted to try.

VS - duchess and a tie swarm

The U-Wing worked brilliantly, taking down three of the TIE's, whilst died due to brilliant piloting on my opponent's part. Duchess evaded everything until a poor barrel roll choice put it at range 1 of the Braylen who had put two direct hits through on him.

The U-wing was great, but i never got the chance to use it as I wanted, I think i agree with ficklegreendice, just throw FCS and Rey on there and you're set

My Heff build (however crazy) would be:

Heff Tobber:

Enhanced Scopes 1

Jyn Erso 2

Sabotuer 2

Pivot Title 0

APL 2

Yes, I want to try Saboteur on him. No, it may not actually work still lol

And when you are frustrated with how little Saboteur does you can replace that with Jan Ors and still have all the fun stuff :P

Oh I'd replace him for Sabine and put Action: bombs on me all day (for more points, granted)

But I like giving older, unused cards a go on new builds just in case. Literally don't think I have EVER used Saboteur.

Oh I'd replace him for Sabine and put Action: bombs on me all day (for more points, granted)

That I can tell you is a great plan, did it yesterday and the extra durability on the U-Wing (especially Heff who is more likely to be focussed) helped a ton at keeping Sabine around.

Yeah SlingPaint just did a vid where one of the guys took a U and two Ks, all full of bombs, to an event. I've put the idea into my U/X/X/Y list though.

i dont know if the ship is just bad or completely goes against my playstyle because i have yet to get any work out of it. Lost like 10 games in a row, all 10 games it felt like it was the Uwing's fault. Never had that long of a losing streak with any ship, not even the punisher lol

it's a tad clunky, due to large base and no k-turn etc.

gotta swing it in from the flank to minimize the need to pivot (landing) into 0ks, or use it to block the **** out of people

FCS and rey are imo a must so you can be as tricksy as you need to be without sacrificing essential dice modification

other than that, keep it as cheap as possible (generally just an ept for cass and another 0-2 point crew)

if the U is the main threat of your list, you may have done goofed. It's not a "support" ship like the Rebel HWK, because it is very self-sufficient, but it will be playing 2nd fiddle to whatever else you have brought along

this is because, again, it is a bit clunky

because it requires a lot of foresight to use, it'll probably never be top tier competitive. It's **** fun, though, and capable of taking care of itself if you build it properly

My current build with it is

Blue squadron pathfinder (29)

U-wing (23)

Sabine (2)

"Chopper" (0)

Pivot wing (0)

Seismic charges (2)

Extra munitions (2)

Collision detector (0)

I'm currently 4-1 with it, a b-wing, and a non-stresshog y-wing

Can i ask you how that list is flown? Just s naked b? Generic or named?

Stupid question; jyn Works on The ship shes on, right? Any ship within r1-2 Can be her own ship iirc.

you are friendly to yourself

you are not "another friendly"

so Jyn does work on the ship she's on (hilarious with el Heffe or Kannan Jarrus)

but Cassian (pilot) does not work on himself

because FFG hates us :(

I took this to Seattle Regionals and went 4-2, ending up in 20th place of 110. My two losses were to a TIE Bomber alpha-strike list, and to the Galaxy Note 7 player who ended up in Top 4. I think I could have placed in top 16 if I'd had some more practice.

"Blue Bombers" - 99 points
