Michigan Regional Report

By droz69, in Star Wars: Armada

Wow, what a day yesterday was. My apologies for not getting all this out sooner. Took me a bit to recover, lol.

Anyway, here goes.

Location: Warriors 3 Games and Comics
City: Wayne, MI
Number of Attendees: 25 (We had 32 confirmed as going on the facebook page, I consider this a solid win)
Number of Rounds: 3 Swiss

We kicked off the fleet actions at 11:30, with about a 40 minute break between 1st and second round to allow people to grab some lunch.

All in all, it was a grand time. Everyone truly enjoyed themselves, and every player was truly a class act.

The 1st round saw some really close games and some not so close games. There was an extremely high level of playing from all of our players, and we even had a newcomer to the tournament scene come in and said he had a really good time. We also saw a a good number of the new objectives being used, with a favorite appearing to be Solar Corona.

There were also some very dominating lists our there, with Dane Curi scoring a monster 732 MOV, with a massive chunk of it coming from the 2nd round of swiss with a 400-19 win. This was the largest MOV gain of the night. Alas, it was not enough to take top spot after 3 rounds.

In 3rd round, there was still no clear winner, though the top of the list saw an extremely unorthodox list comes into play. As I was taking everyone's lists for verification, I couldn't help but take note of a single list that stood out most among the others. Don't get me wrong, other than two lists were were practically identical (4x Argeutins and three squadrons, both brought by two brothers who are some of the coolest cats out there, and have possible the greatest story of reconnecting with each other that I have ever heard), the list diversity was huge. Large ships, medium ships, small ships, all of them out there. Some no squadrons, some massive squadrons, some light squadrons. And all of them were doing very well. The overall difference in the top 4 lists was a single tournament point, and into round 3, it was anybody's game. I was proud to be running this tournament, and thoroughly enjoying being able to watch these skilled players duke it out.

But then there is that one list. It boggled my mind, blew me away with it's completely unorthodox approach to list making, at least with the lists I've seen run in this area. Which is ironic, because this person wasn't from this area. He came from North Carolina, deciding this would be a good time to come see a really good friend of his that lived in Toledo, and at the same time partake in the Michigan Regional. He ran the fattest MC80 Assault Cruiser I have ever seen, fatter than any fatty cruiser there ever was. I thought to myself, as I looked at this list, thinking "This is nuts, this can't possibly work right? I mean, this is a ship you throw all of your forces at and take it down as soon as you possibly could, right?" Any of you guys ever played that game Exploding Kittens? Well, aside from the fact that the game is mediocre at best, there this incredible card that's called the 'NOPE' card. That's what this ship was. It was a whole lot of 'NOPE'. It was a monster, weighing in at a whopping 191 points. And it was a breathtaking sight to see. And guess what, this thing won. It stomped his first opponent, soundly defeated his second opponent, and had a decisive victory against his third opponent, though his third opponent fared better than the previous two.

The winner of the Star Wars Armada Michigan Regional is Britt Davis! Congratulations to him, an absolutely upstanding individual and all around super nice guy. We have his second round match recorded, as well as one match from each round. We also have an interview with him at the end with him talking about how he went about creating his list and his thoughts on the game moving forward. These videos should be posted within the next day or two, and I will update this thread with the videos as soon as they are put on youtube. The rankings are as follows:

Gents, as I have time this week, I will get all these lists into a list builder and link them over for everyone to see. I have at least given you the winners.

I'm sure we'll get a bunch of post about how Ackbar, MC80s, and large ships are dead tomorrow.

Ackbar/Large ships mad OP and also squadrons not powerful enough. Armada dead. Ben's fault.

I love the world's fattest MC80. It warms the cockles of my heart.

Edit: I mean good god, 191 points. It is everything I ever dreamed it could be.

HERO, are you seeing this? I mean, look at that beautiful thing. And no ECMs. Just a straight up meat shield.

Ben broke them.

By physically breaking them.

Classic Ben.

Ben jokes aside.

I've run MC80s for the longest of time. The Assault is one of the best variants for filling every upgrade slot. Defiance has always been a great second player staple, but Engine Techs is enormously good making a threat as first player. And in a game where Nav is offense and Nav is defense, it makes that ship surprisingly capable of getting itself out of a jam. 180 points seems to be pretty common for me. And Corvettes/Flotillas are the right units around it to make it sing. This is absolutely a solid build.

I second this. I run a Defiance build with some real badonkadonk and it is by far my most reliable ship. Always wins big because that ship has never died for me so far (knock on all wood in the immediate vicinity).

As someone who has run a 181 point Assault Defiance in the past, I can honestly say that my previous post was me gushing about how good the build was and not sarcasm.

Fat MC80s are in right now. I took a 193 pointer, same load out with the exception of ECM instead of RBD to the NC regional and took first.

I enjoyed the look people give when you tell them how much it's worth at the beginning of the game and how they thought they could easily take it down because it's only an MC80 after all. Then it all changes when they realize turn 3/4 that it seems unkillable and just give up on shooting at it.

Britt is a god amongst men.

Droz69, thanks to you for running a great tournament and to Warriors 3 store for hosting such a fun event. Everyone I met were very friendly and great competitors.

Itobergs, your fleet and Q's fleet were my inspirations for my MI list build. The MC80 kitted out is incredibly durable and throws a lot of dice. Unless your opponent is willing to throw everything at it, it is going to play havoc with your opponent's fleet. Coupled w the 2016-7 regionals data, I was emboldened to use it.

I totally agree. great tournament. This was my first regional, and I really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend that Droz69 and Warriors 3 run it again.

I agree with wolfpack95 and Emperor Dane's comments. Droz69 and Warriors 3 were great. This was also my first Regional, and even though I could have flown better everyone I faced were class acts and fun games. I drove 3 hours one way for the event, and would most likely do it again.

The Monster MC80 build was great to see. Lots of variation in list builds. I thought the other crazy list build to see (since it is relatively new) were the two lists of 4 Arq's each. There ended up being a brother on brother pairing, where both lists featured 4 Arq's. Yes, that is right, 8 Arq's on one table. Someone with more information will have to comment, but I believe it ended with an MOV of ~5 points.

Did you feel that reinforced blast doors was worth replacing ECM on the MC80? I figured it would be better to swap Advanced Projectors out with Blast Doors to help against large ships with XI7 that override the usefulness of having AP.

Having playtested against this list quite a few times, I will attest to the greatness of RBD on the pickle. It lets him comfortably double ram anything in his front arc should anything try to camp out there, which is terrible for small ship blockers.

Holy crap. I completely forgot about the double ram.

It ended up being a 3 point MOV difference. Those two end up playing each other anytime I run an event with them in it, and they love it. It's always fun to watch them play each other, their play styles are so similar. I truly enjoy watching them play, and watching the joy they get out of duking it out with each other.

Forget the double ram?!

Never forget! Never forgive!

Interestingly, I never got to use them during the tourney. My MC80 never took any damage cards. So I never got to use it. I also never had to worry about not using my brace bc solar corona tossed the only accuracies that were rolled against me.

In testing w Caldias, I didn't miss the ECM, but as we move forward w wave 5, I have a feeling that ECM will be needed as more XI7s reappear.

WAIT A MINUTE...so you're saying I can double ram!

(my mind is still being blown)

Yes! :-P

As I said from the NC Regional, I can definitely vouch that Britt is a super good guy! Really love this community!
