Speculating on the Future of EotE

By intothenight, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

A book with LOTS of NPC creatures and "animals" from around the Galaxy would be nice. But they are more likely to splash them in other books, as they have up to this point. And I guess that is what the NPC decks are for (and they are great....)

So I changed my mind. I want more NPC cards.

Adversary decks would be great. It's so nice to just thumb through a deck of cards and pull out what I need for an evening's session and have that right at hand. I'd also imagine it's profitable for them since they self print there's no middle man.

I guess i'd like to see the following:

Hives of Scum and Villainy - an EotE book version of AoR Strongholds of the Resistance

Creature of the known systems - a book with all the playable races in one place, plus listings of all the critters, with pictures of each

A Starship & Vehicles Compendium with pictures for each ship

A gear book with the gear from all of the books in one collection, hopefully with at least pictures of most items

Sector Books, detailing main planets and points of interest (along the lines of Suns of Fortune)

These books are not going to happen because they have a low number of people who buy them. They only do books with broad appeal. So a few ships some equipment payer options as a mix to appeal to the largest volume of buyers. And as a rockstar said. A greatest hits album basically means you are done.

Self Printing increases cost and reduces global availability, I am waiting since last spring for more adversary decks from the local distributor, but their relations with FFG had been a total mess and no cards did come. You see actually a lot of self-printing from 3rd parties for those cards. FFGs global shipping costs are outrageous. ;-)

I have already informed my EOE players I am done after I finish Mask of the PQ. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE creating my own adventures but the format for EOE isn't something I see myself doing a campaign around. Simply put, I just don't feel like writing up 3 pages of backstory and minutia for covering every possible conceivable reaction for Bob-7, the Asp droid used once every 15 years by Gardola the Hutt.

Um, you do realize that you don't have to do that, right?

All of those compendium books are pretty much directly against their marketing model. If you want all the shineys, you're going to bleed some money.

I don't mind throwing money down the Star Wars shaped hole (I mean more money down the hole). I just want them for organization purposes. Everything of one category in one place for easy GM access would be a dream.

That makes sense. I would also like to see that. Of course, there is a WEG book by that name, so I don’t know if FFG would re-use yet another WEG title, but they could certainly do the same basic concept.

It’s not possible to publish these compendium books until such time as everything has already been printed in other books. And then you’re just scraping the bottom of the barrel, and the line is done.

I don’t think anything like these will ever happen for FFG.

Sector Books, detailing main planets and points of interest (along the lines of Suns of Fortune)

That also makes sense, at least for certain sectors/regions.

Print-on-demand is low overhead, but also low profit. FFG sells these at a high enough cost to justify their existence, but not by that much more.

They don’t sell that well as it is, so instead of doing mass printing which would allow them to sell at much lower prices and/or higher profit, they have to do them on-demand instead.

If you really want them, then you’ll buy them from a place that can actually get them and send them to you. Otherwise, you clearly don’t really want them — at least, not enough.

That is correct. Still if assume a rate of 53€ per hour, it is still cheaper for me to just print them myself. Which I have to do anyway as the community made cards are more complete than the FFG sets. :)

And our GM is using most of the time a laptop as tool, so a website with search function might be not as cool, but quicker to use on top. :)

I really don't want them enough to pay ~$70 shipping for something which should be at best 10. I still have them in my basket in the FFG store, just in case they change the shipping rates to something less silly. edit: Actually I just checked, shipping seems to went down a little, $40 shipping extra on a $70 order is still something which does not make me enthusiastically, open my wallet.

I can see the Starship and Gear books not going with the business model and maybe to never happen, but not sure why that would be the case for " Hives of Scum and Villainy" or more Sector Books, as both of these seem in line with current products that have been published so far across the line. These two seem quite probable to me.

One thing I would like to see is a rules compendium, pulling together all of the new tables for spending dice results in different situations, as the current model of having them appear in career books across different lines makes it impossible to have every eventuality to hand. And yes, I know that they are not 100% necessary to play the game but they do add some interesting colour to encounters.

I agree a modular encounter book would be great.

That sounds more like a few more updated GM screens, which are btw super useful, we are using 3 simultaneously in our group, because the game is so scattered that even players need those screens ^_°
