Speculating on the Future of EotE

By intothenight, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

With the last of the career sourcebooks theoretically almost out, I can't help but wonder if we'll get more content specifically in the Edge line. They've still got plenty of books to release for AoR and F&D, not to mention books covering the new movies.

I suspect we'll get new specialization decks to cover everything in EotE as well as catching up with all the new specializations covered in the other lines' sourcebooks.

It would kind of make sense to leave EotE alone from a publishing standpoint and focus on churning out the rest of the books for the other lines. I'm reasonably confident EotE will at least get more adventure books.

Deep down, I hope we get at least one or two more region books for EotE. As far as I know, we still haven't really touched on the Mandalorians yet, and EotE seems like the best fit for them. Dare I hope for some MandalMotors ships, Mandalorian armor, maybe even specs for Mandalorian humans (and hopefully the Echani)? And it might also be fun to see what kind of scams, smuggling operations, and firefights an enterprising crew of ne'er-do-wells could get into if they found themselves in the Corporate Sector.

I think there's still a lot of possibilities I'd like to see explored in the seedier parts of the galaxy.

What about you guys? Any places or aliens you've been dying to see fleshed out in EotE?

PC Mandalorian Humans are in the Friends Like These adventure for AoR.

As for other books they could create, a forum Pirate suggested an idea a while ago that caught my attention, a book of Modular Encounters. That's number 1 on my list.

But a Corporate sector book, as well as an Arkanis sector book.

Then an adventure based around colonisation and exploration.

Corporate Sector would be nice, but does the Arkanis sector really have much identity? Sure, there are some important places in it, but as a whole it doesn't have the established identity of Hutt Space or the Corporate Sector.

Exactly, gives FFG some freedom to create more unique content, Weik was rather cool.

Beyond No Disintegrations I expect FFG to publish at least one more regional book for Edge of the Empire giving more details on Tattooine, Ryloth, Rodia and a dozen more of the most interesting worlds on the fringe of galactic civilization plus a world wholly created by FFG.

I also think that FFG will pulish at least one more Edge adventure in 2018.

I think we'll be seeing more edge adventures.

Most other systems have a player's guide, a nice thick book with everything I want inside.

Jawas. If there are no official rules for Jawas ever released, then their lives shall be forfeit, and their lineages shall be ended. I know there are rather good unofficial rules in the menagerie, but Jawas require, nay DEMAND to be acknowledged as the true movers and shakers of the Star Wars galaxy! The entire line should be repurposed to be all about the Jawas.

I'm not asking much, am I? Of course not!

I think HappyDaze nailed it; we'll probably see a book on shadowports or some variation on "hives of scum and villainy"-type sourcebook. There's also a chance that with all the career books out they'll try something different, like a new line of themed sourcebooks. Perhaps a campaign setting, like WEG's "Lords of the Expanse" or "DarkStryder"?

A tatooine source book has to be in the works, ive suspected this for some time, as we appear to lack stats for two of the most iconic species in Star Wars, (either as Pc or NPC) and thats Jawas and Tusken Raiders.

I don't think any of the members of those species that appeared in the movies even had names. That makes them less significant than Ewoks...

None of them had names used on screen...but then, neither did Ewoks.*

Secondary sources, such as short stories, Decipher's CCG, comics, Essential Guides, etc. gave some of them names.

*(Until secondary sources gave them names that were used in The Ewok Adventure, Caravan of Courage, and the Ewoks animated series.)

SECOND EDITION!

With a real vehicle/starfighter/capitol ship system that makes sense!

With tweaks to soak/damage so you cant become immune to blaster pistols!

With tweaks to talents so the Doctor isnt the most devastating hand to hand character in the game!

That maybe so, although I believe that the Jawas may have had names , behind the scenes in much the same way as Pondo Baba did. Though the sand people were featured heavily in the marketing at the time. Let's face, tusken raiders, have had more screen time than most of the races, when you combine the total screen time of all the playable races in any individual splat book.

My view of what the game needs isn't just in regards to EoE.

I want a book(s) full of modular encounters, unique named NPCs with their basic location(s) (ie. Bob the Bothan and his Bistro on Planet B), more adversary decks and intro some for items and vehicles, roll out mats maybe with a couple themes, Cantina, Dock, Space, so marker/minis could be used for more complicated fights, an exemplar tome that goes through all the skills with more detailed play examples and dice results charts, to name a few.

Ship combat could use a more in depth set of examples and suggestions.

What I don't want more of is books filled with fluff, there's plenty of fluff freely available on the internet and I don't want pages taken up or my money spent on more of that. I don't need more fiddley bits, as in guns, ships, and stuff, that's all too easily created by a GM. A sprinkling of new universal specs is fine, but I don't want a second pass on the careers, that's just bloat.

What I'd like to see more of is tools and stuff for allowing a GM to build and run a campaign. All of that laid out in a plug and play fashion, as opposed to lengthy adventure books that make me feel like I am studying to give a book report. A book with set piece modular encounters, unique NPCs, their locations, table play aids like basic map/mats, and as always lotsa pretty pictures to go with it all.

Basically shift the focus from PCs and CHARGEN to the GM and campaign construction/support.

While I do think the game actually could use a second edition, I do have to say that barring that, I cant agree with this post more.

I have always though it was shortsighted to focus so much on character books over GM books. I know that there are more than a few people here who are now saying 'but everyone can buy character books, but only GMs buy GM books!' That would be the shortsightedness I am talking about. I dont think my experience is unique in that some of the people buy all of the books, some people buy some of the books, and some people buy none of the books in every gaming group, no matter the game or financial abilities of the people in the group. This means that the amount of income for FFG isnt based on the number of books, but on the number of active gamers. The way to make more gamers is to make the game easy to learn, and more importantly, easy to run

A book filled with themed modular encounters would be nice. Heck, maybe that should be what the next pass on career books should be. A smugglers book filled with smuggling, gambling, and larcenous encounters and with statted out NPCs for allies and adversaries would be extremely useful. We dont need 'This is Nal Hutta. Hutts live here.' We need 'This is Drogo the hutt, he has this job for the players, and this is how he plans to screw them (load them up with obligation) and this is how they can get out of it (work off the obligation).'

The only thing I disagree on is that I think that FFG should toss the ship combat out the window and start over. Make separate scaled rules for small and large scale combats and integrate the Armada and X-wing rules to some degree. Make it clear and easy to use for those times players are doing their fights in space. It is a fairly integral part to the game that there is starship combat, so it should work better. Heck, the starship rules are about 75% of my reason to want a second edition. If they patched it I would beok with that

I think in the long term, making the GM's life easier by reducing prep time as much as possible is beneficial to the game line's long-term health. When you're in your teens or your early twenties, finding a couple of hours to prepare a session isn't a problem for a lot of people. But with age come responsibilities and new interests that take up more and more of your time. It's hard enough to get a bunch of adults with jobs and families together for a regular game night. Don't give the GM so much extra work that s/he'll age out of the game due to time constraints.

Vehicle/starship combat needs more than suggestions and examples--it needs reworked rules.

I speculate a clear and concise "Here's what happened since Return of the Jedi" manual with some new locations, a run-down of all the factions, and some hints on how to play characters and run games in the new era. If executed well, it'll feel like a good Eclipse Phase expansion. Probably won't see such a thing until '19.

What I would LIKE other than [see above] is pretty much the same thing you folks are asking for. A manual of shadowports with a huge pile of modular encounters and plot seeds would be GREAT. After initial character creation, I asked my players what their main port of call was, and they all looked at me blankly. Then someone shrugged and said: "Nar Shadaa." He loves that place on account of being an old hat Dark Forces fan, and I could've brought some suggestions to the table, but a book detailing that sort of stuff would've been useful. More modular encounters and other associated fodder would be excellent. Considering the current quality of planet/location write-ups, bundling all that stuff together could make for a really great book- useful to players and GMs alike. Last, a single book with all the current adversaries and some new ones, ESPECIALLY some more wildlife/monsters would be really helpful. The adversary cards are a good idea and I'm still considering purchasing them, but I'm kind of married to the idea that a book would be more convenient. (Maybe I'm too stuck in my ways?)

I don’t think that’s going to happen. As soon as FFG starts shipping 2nd edition books, that immediately makes obsolete all the 1st edition books, and they’re nowhere near done yet with 1st edition of AoR and F&D.

What you WANT to happen does not necessarily have any relationship whatsoever with what FFG is actually likely to do — with EotE, or anything else.

Basically shift the focus from PCs and CHARGEN to the GM and campaign construction/support.

As soon as FFG does that, they essentially kill the line, because no players will be buying any of the new books. They’d cut the potential market by an order of magnitude for all further books.

Whatever FFG is likely to do, I think they need to keep the market broad and appeal to everyone, and not just the GMs or just the PCs. Anything else is likely to just wind up killing this franchise sooner rather than later.

Is that true, though? How many of those player-targeted books are actually bought by the GMs? They're probably the ones most into the game, after all.

The SW games have a lot of adventure and location books, and the lines haven't died from those either, have they?

Second Edition Dark Heresy.

Besides, it would not be all that hard to make the game back compatable.

After initial character creation, I asked my players what their main port of call was, and they all looked at me blankly.

That's because you need to treat character creation as a collaborative process, with everyone building connections between their characters. Shared locations, background characters, which ship they use, how they all know each other, how they relate to each other, and yeah, what's their port of call if they're the sort of people who have one.

Draw some rough mind maps to work all that out as the players and you come up with suggestions and ideas. That way the players have some shared knowledge of the campaign right from the start, some guidance on how to play their characters, and the GM has tons of plot hooks.
