Star Destroyers- Why aren't they white?

By Maarkean, in Star Wars: Armada

I own a copy of Sculpting the Galaxy, a book that's nothing but photos of the props. The Star Destroyer models, even after RotJ, were very clearly white or a very light grey. A couple shades lighter than the color of the Falcon.

Are ISDs white or are they grey?

Well the same model can be either. The top photo is a good illustration. Where the ISD bridge is in shadow it looks blue-grey. Where it is in sunlight it looks almost white. If it was in strong sunlight it would look more like the Rogue One photo shown earlier. Perhaps the classic ISD photo from ANH shown earlier was white but in subdued lighting.

In the end it depends on how sunny it is in space. Ok then, how close your ship is to the centre of the star system that you are currently bringing order, peace and the Emperor's justice to.

And what colour Star, no doubt- since Starlight is the most overwhelming of the sense of lights - Different Stars are different wavelengths, which effect visibility....

Shameless plug/serious example!

No, that isn't a Disney ISD compared to my painted ones... that's an FFG ISD using the exact same color basecoat that the two ISD's above use. It just goes to show you how weathering can drastically affect the overall color tones of the finished product. If you look closely, you can see that the brightest, cleanest spots on my weathered ISD's share the same nearly white color as the one on the bottom. The tilted camera is what's responsible for the apparent size/proportion discrepancy: it just goes to show you how you can't trust even movie shots too far!

Do you know how much it costs to build a Death Star? Imagine painting the fleet as well, I mean all that paint would have cost them a fortune; then everytime you chased some rebels through an asteroid field, it has to be re-painted. Then there's the pinstriping and racing stripes!

Can that angle explain the teeny tiny miniscule bridge section?

Admittedly however, the paint job already looks more promising, slight weathering would make it perfect. What basecoat are you using?

Testor's Model Master Camouflage Gray, acrylic (it's brighter than the rattle can and lacquer for some reason).

As for the bridge, I'll see if I can put the ISD on a stand and do a perspective that gets it closer to the stock images :)

BTW, I do agree though that the FFG model is off- however, I actually quite enjoy the modified proportions. From a gunnery layout perspective, the FFG's increased hull angle actually allows the ISD's turrets to be superfired if you consider the engine axis as the central axis: it's actually a smarter design than the "real" ISD. The FFG ISD proportions are even more clearly off when you look at the hangar locations, but the OCD part of me would rather have the sensible armament layout than the movie accuracy.
