Success w. Strategic

By LordTesla, in Star Wars: Armada

So what are some of your success stories with Strategic?

I for one love it. I scored 180 points to my opponent's 60 with Sensor Net (I was second player) and 1 Lambda which got me at least 90 of those points. The Lambda basically guaranteed each of my ships got a token each round.

I was skeptical at first about only having 1 Lambda for objective token manipulation. I now think it's almost ALWAYS worth having one strategic squad if you're going to bring objectives that use objective tokens.

I'm looking to experiment with these soon. Seems like a very effective method of getting and denying points. I'm interested in seeing what these can do in some of the less obvious objectives like Fire Lanes, where I can push tokens outside of my opponent's optimal firing arcs or move them into a double arc.

Never thought of fire lanes. That could be a good one. My other option was Capture the VIP

12 of 24 scenarios have tokens. There are deny tactics with lambda. One problem that need FAQ are objective tokens assigned to shis. (lambda stoleing VIP from the ship and puting it on another friendly ship)

but.... the VIP gets on the shuttle, and goes to another ship? How is that not what a shuttle is for?

Tokens assigned to ships are stored on the ship card and not the ship base. It is in the rules for this very reason.

Well I guess that solved that issue ;)

so we played VIP wrong :/

Good to know :)

Or you could move them under/into the path of an opponent's ship. That would affect the path they take as they try to avoid landing on it, and allow you to dictate somewhat their movement.

Salvage Run: got all 4 tokens because i ripped them right out from under my opponent's ships before he could activate to claim them lol.

Minefield: Cleared the way for myself, laid a trap for him :D

Jamming Field: he said hell no and put the jamming field off to the side so i couldnt abuse it rofl

I'm very surprised folks are letting the shuttles walk around so unopposed. I'd feel like in a game with Fire Lanes or Sensor Net it becomes a priority target.

Got an obscene number of points from Fire Lanes due to a Lambda. Easily worth 60 points worth from Strategic alone.

Shuttles and VCX are tough enough to take a bit of work to remove. Not impossible but odds are they take more than 1 turn even if focused if properly supported.

If you are going for a Strategic abusing strat, you should NEVER go without escort ships. Ive made my friends gun for my strategic ships to the point where one is starting to use the IG88 guy that ignores escort lol.

It may have been a priorty for my opponent. It didn't matter though because Maarek launched a surprise attack and destroyed his Intel ship with one attack. Thus he was tangled up the rest of the game

Yep, it's why I try to always bring 2 Intels.

I got to play Salvage Run last night and had 2 VCXs. Easiest 80 points I ever had. Love it.

Also, Ten Numb = badass

There are only 9 objectives where strategic can be used. I think sensor net will never be played competitively since sensor nets does benefit player 2 so much, even if player one has 2 strategics.

Yeah it can be pretty amazing with fire lanes, I don't see anything that says I can't just move the token right under someones ship so they are overlapping.

Thats just nasty and gamey. I bet your flagship is a flotilla as well! :P

The only squadrons I got from wave 5 so far are 2 Lambdas and 2 VCX, and I swapped them for a coffee.

They have proved to be very irritating, I will be taking 2 strategic ships every game from now on without fail. Its things like this that make Armada more fun than X-wing and 40k.

What if i have advanced gunnery with salvation and hyprspace with salvation/yavaris....?

It will get played because you can make some horrific objective combos now

It's awesome with lanes... But as people wise up I doubt they will pick it... It's good with Intel sweep... Haven't tried sensor net... But if sensor net is as good as lanes then strategic will be huge... Lacking a good red objective, but then you take most wanted or something of the like and your opponent will hate going first

I actually played this one competitively as first player yesterday. I had 2 strategic to his 1. He wound up getting 1 more token than I (10/11), but it was just barely and in the final round. Actually quite ridiculous and intense, how it played out. That 1 token was just enough to push him ahead and win by 5 MOV. Really liked that match.

Were you first player? Did either of you have FCT?

Yes, but no FCT. Our squadrons were engaged pretty much the whole time. He had 6 activations (2 Arqs w/EA, Demo, 3 red die Goz) to my 5. The other objective choices were Fire lanes and i forget the other, probably most wanted. I didn't have many red dice, so Sensor net was the only 1 I felt comfy with.

As a first player could be interesting to use your strategic to force the second player to overlap the objective tokens in fire lanes.
