2017 System Open Series: Hangar Bay Rule Questionss

By Gilmoro, in X-Wing

Hello, all! I'll be attending my first tournament (other than a store championship) in a couple weeks. I've only been playing for a year, but I've been reasonably successful, locally, and I hope I'm not woefully out of my depth by going to one of these events.

At any rate, I am a bit perplexed by this new Distinct Rule for the System Open Series side events. From the 2017 System Open Series Briefing:

To play in a Hangar Bay side event, you should bring two standard squads that follow the 100-point maximum. These squads will use the same damage deck and obstacles. For the 2017 System Open Series events, we will also be using a new stipulation: the Distinct Rule states that each of your squads cannot use any of the same ship models, pilot cards, upgrade cards, or unique names as your other squad.

I think this is worded...murkily. It says it's for 2017 System Open Series events, but it's only listed under the Hangar Bay event description.

Here's my question: does the distinct rule apply only to the two squads that you bring to the Hangar Bay or all three squads (two for the Hangar Bay and one for the main tournament)? Whatever the case is, it needs to be clarified because that has pretty big ramifications. Whereas I'd be tempted to just bring two lists (one for the main tournament/primary for the Hangar Bay and a secondary for the Hangar Bay), if this rule applies across the whole thing, then I need three DISTINCT lists - one for the main tourney and two for the Hangar Bay - none of which can duplicate anything that any of the others has.

Am I making any sense? Does anyone know the intent and planned enforcement of this rule? I really don't want to show up and find out I've planned my lists incorrectly. I really don't do well building squads on-the-spot.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Gilmoro,

Depending on which system open you are attending, you may have already received an email from the respective convention manager at Cascade Games. You can email him your queries.

Since it says "other squad" in the description it am positive it only applies to the Hanger Bay event or it would say other squads. The main tournament is completely separate from the hanger bay side tournament so they should have no impact on each other.

This is a good question. So can both my hanger bay lists have fire-control system in them?

The restrictions on ship model and unique pilots makes sense, but then the 'Distinct Rule' mentions upgrade cards.

I'd read it as 'you can't have more than one copy of any single pilot or upgrade card or unique name'. But we'll find out soon enough I guess.

Which means swarms can go hang apparently, and so can Mindlink. But on the plus side, so can multiple x7s...

It makes for a very interesting set of list building options though.

I hope they publish the full rules soon though, I need to actually plan my Yavin Hangar Bay lists. And this time round if it DOES work like that I'll have to bring 3, because my tourney list is a 2x2 identical ship mindlink build :( .

You can't duplicate upgrades/ships/names between your two lists. So as an example, if list A has Push the Limit in it, list B can't. There's nothing stopping you from having multiple versions of PtL in list A however.

I hope you're right.

(Or do you have official confirmation of that, in which case yay, I only need to work out one list)

He's right.

Yeah it's not duplicating between lists.

It does need to be read carefully, but I think it's clear that this is the correct interpretation and your hangar bay and main event lists have no interaction.

So you can now have two lists of the same faction but they have to be unique?

So, just to clarify. If I have Rey as a pilot in one list, can I have her as a crew in the other?

Nope.

Rey is a unique name. The rule says you can't have the same unique name in both squads.

Yah, it does nothing to stop swarms, multiple x7s in one list, or mindlink (since it only applies from one list to the other, not within a single list), but if you have x7 in one list, you can't have any in the other list (nor can you have any TIE/Ds because you can't have a TIE defender in both lists). If you have sabine crew on a k-wing in one list, you can't have any ship piloted by sabine in the other list, regardless of faction, etc.

I still think the faction rule from before holds, so has to be 2 different factions, AND now cards/names cannot be duplicated across the lists.

There's no stipulation that you can't use 2 lists of the same faction
