Helping a starter.

By Surge4tw, in X-Wing

Been playing X-wing for a while and I got my friend the new Force Awakens Starter Kit to start, when I asked what he would like to pick up or his favorite ships, he said "I really want to get the Slave I"

Aside from getting a Firespray anyone mind offering maybe another 1 or 2 ships you would recommend him picking up to go with it, so he can have a solid 100 pt team with maybe a little versatility?

I had suggested maybe a Tie advanced and another single F/O tie to throw in the mix.

Opinions or suggestions? Thanks in advanced!

If by TIE advanced, you mean TIE advanced prototype, that would be a good pickup. F/O has omega leader right out of the box. And you certainly cannot go wrong with imperial vets. If he wants to fly the firespray, most wanted will prepare him for the better scum options.

The Imperial Firespray is kinda in a bad place right now. The Scum version is far and away better, and even they aren't super competitive (unless you are very good, which I'm betting your newbie friend isn't) If he is set on playing Empire (Good Man!) then I would recommend a few regular Ties(cheap filler, good blockers, etc.) and a Decimator.(very fun to fly, pretty forgiving for newbies as long as you don't fly directly into your enemie's main force - focus fire will kill them fast, quick, and in a hurry) After those purchases, I think Imperial Aces and/or Veterans is a good next step. Lots of cool ships and pilots. Also I agree with the above poster, Tie Advanced Prototypes are great, Tie Advanced not so much.

Ask him what he wants. Anyone starting is just playing for fun, and probably not for super mega awesome tournament street cred. The game takes on a whole new wonderful flavour when you play for fun instead of just flying meta lists all over the place.

I agree whole heartedly, was just curious on feed back. :)

Mynock just covered this topic actually: http://mynockpodcast.libsyn.com/

If he's going Imperial, you can cover a lot of bases by picking up Imperial Veterans and Imperial Aces, then one large-base ship to taste (Decimator > Lambda)

No one suggested TIE Interceptor for Soontir Fel? Shame. That's an ace that a new player can fly and feel like they are awesome with. Good feels keep you coming back, and it will help teach them advanced movement strategies while being a bit more forgiving.

Get him a firespray and a Decimator. Both great ships for beginners because it will help them get shots most turns because of the rear arch and turret. Lots of health on them too so they won't lose a ship early in the game.

BOBA-CHIRP: 100 Points

Boba Fett PS (8) - 39pts

Heavy Laser Cannon - 7pts

Rear Admiral Chiraneau PS (8) - 46pts

Expose - 4pts

Ysanne Isard - 4pts

This list is fun as you will be able to toss 4 attack dice with each ship. All the upgrade cards come with these expansions.

Before I get trolled on I should mention this is not a competitive list. But a fun start for a beginner who only owns the 2 starter Tie FOs and wants a Firespray.

Actually, I think that list is pretty good for a new player... It's not like new players will have the skill to correctly use x7 Defenders, so might as well get as many offensive dice out there as possible with as many possible shooting options as possible.

Tie Adv Prototype is a great addition for him, TIE FO is for Omega Leader, etc. He should probably pick up Imperial Vets and a Defender since if he likes Empire so much he will eventually fly X7 Defenders at least some of the time.

I almost miss the days this question actually had an easy answer. Starting with a core set you get an X-Wing and Falcon and the Rebels were off to a good start; the Empire was a little more challenging although Imperial Aces and an Interceptor expansion can prove nasty. Nothing so easy now with so many more options to pick from.

Have a starter getting the expansions with those ships gives you more pilot options that can be used with any/all of them.

These are all great points; but....

If he wants an Imperial Firespray, by all means, he should get one. They're cool, fun and easy to fly. For now, completely forget the competitive meta; two reasons really, 1) he's a beginner and he will not be competitive, nor bring any sensible quality players best game that he faces, they'll be in teaching mode, 2) this is a Star Wars game and it's meant to be cool and fun first and foremost; therefore, fly what you love while you can....before that **** competitive bug stings you....even when it does, tell him to get two defenders and the Imp Vets pack, he'll then be immediately competitive.

Good feedback guys, i'll keep checking back and update on what he decides on :D

TIE Advanced Prototype is probably the best starter ship, period.

If you're doing Vader's TIE Advanced, it's go big or go home. It's 4 Advanced or no Advanced, since you need the Raider at $100 that comes with 4 copies of each fix card. And if you want to run the Vader man himself, a Hound's Tooth is the most cost effective way to get a copy of Lone Wolf and Engine Upgrade.

Tbh, the cheapest way to get Vader in the game is buy a single Shuttle and run a "Poor Man's Palp-Aces" with Vader crew and a few other ships.

If you are getting Vets and/or Aces, definitely get 1 copy of each generic ship, but no more than that, and stick to the higher pilot skills. Arch dodgers and ordinance users need the high skill to function properly.

Also note, the Hound's Tooth is a scum ship. What's more, if you buy Aces and the generic Interceptor, you need 2 copies of the Star Viper for Auto Thrusters, another Scum ship, so you may as well consider getting Most Wanted, but then you've got 1 foot in the Rebel door, too...

Get a Firespray and Most Wanted. With the Y-wing and Z-95s, he can make a decent list with Scum Boba or Kath.

I would tell you to get another Starter or Firespray and any of the Aces boxes/scum and vill. Extra Dice are always a great pick, past that some great lists ideas are,

2 Tie FO, 1 Firespray and 2 Interceptors

2 Tie FO, 1 Firespray and 1 Defender

4 Tie FO, 1 Firespray

2 Z95s, 1 Y-wing and 1 Firespray

I dont think any of those ideas would be a bad list for fun. Torny play with Ties and 1 Defender right now is super strong.

This is a great site for adding your collection and seeing what you can build with.

I would say after Most Wanted nab a ARC-170 simply for tail gunner and to start building a rebel list.

And proxy cards.

If he wants to fly Vader, get the TIE Advanced. Don't worry about getting the extra cards for it from the Raider, just print out copies.

After the firespray (which is a solid purchase for rookies), there are a few Imperial choices:

1. Imperial Aces + Vets. It will get you to the forefront of the meta, and a loader/proxy Soontir card gives them a lot of options for lists.

2. 2 Core sets and a TIE fighter expansion. Opens the door to Imperial swarm builds, but a bit crazy to manage.

3. A Decimator and Phantom, plus VI card. A More or less instantly solid build, which is both forgiving and challenging, with a few build options.

4. Rebel Aces + Heroes of the Resistance. If they wants to go the rebel route, this is the best way to get there quick.

But I'd say the very best way to start buying expansions is to get what you like, when you're in the store and looking at all the cool minis.

I'd like to join my comrades above and advertise the TIE Interceptor + Imperial Aces pack first.

The INT has IMHO the best Imperial pilot ever, Baron Soontir Fel (with the Countess following close second), IA pack will give him two Push the Limit cards which are always great, the Firespray will give 2 copies of Stealth Device, which work great on INTs. With two TIE FOs, three TIE INTs and the Firespray, he can make various list combinations too, for fun.

I believe fun is the most important factor for a rookiee, and INTs in general (the Baron especially) is a heck of a fun to fly.

If he wants to stay First Order thematic, one pack of TIE/Fo plus a TIE/Sf aren't a bad combo either.

I think this is some good advice, as the cards match up nicely. At his stage in the game, you guys can probably share (or proxy depending on your thoughts on it) the cards he might need that come in other expansions (like autothrusters). The addition of a Tie-FO expansion would give him 3 ties, which are always great support to a large ship as blockers or can be run as a mini-swarm. It would also give him the full compliment of FO pilots, and Omega Leader. So my vote, in order, is:

Slave 1

Imp Aces

Tie-Int

Tie-FO

That's a nice handful of squads you can run. Option number 2 would be to just buy all of the ships. Which is the advice everyone really wants to give. = )

I'm more or less (more ships and not Slave I focused, but still a rookie) in the same place as your mate and I find the arc-dodgers list the most rewarding to play with. They move a lot, so you get more practice at avoiding (and running into) obstacles, which was a major factor for me when I first started. I'd go with Imp Aces and TIE Advanced Prototype as the Inquisitor fits them nicely.
