Transporting Your Fleet

By Vineheart01, in Star Wars: Armada

If I wasn't invested into Battlefoam from a previous game, I'd swap to Feldherr. 2 day fullfillment from Amazon, and people tell me the quality is basically the same as Battlefoam.

You just have to wait on shipping from EU to Amazon. I am still waiting for the new stuff to hit so I can order the Liberty/Home One and Flotilla trays.

I like the small storage boxes that home depot offers. They're super cheap (~$5 a piece), it's modular, they connect to each other. i love em. They can just barely fit an isd. Still dont want to go banging it around cause of the lack of protection or foam, but my stuff stays snug, else i get some of those printable storage boxes, then pack it away. I have 2 sets of the below boxes (~$20 total) and it fits all of my imperial stuff they've released thus far (2 isd's, 2 ints, 2 vics, 3 raiders, 3 goz, 2 arqs, etc. basically either 2 or 3 of everything including squadron packs). If you're not going to be rough with ur boxes while storing or transporting, then i highly recommend these.

My VSD antenna broke before i even had anything other than the starter box lol

My partner dropped the VSD from the core set the day I got it. I gave up on the antenna at that point.

Another vote for Feldherr. $73 + free shipping with Prime to store a minimum of 8 ships and 30+ squadrons? For that price it can't be beat.

I just ordered a second MAXI bag so I can sort all of my Rebel ships into 1 bag, and my Imperial ships in the other. I'm constantly amazed at how much stuff fits into their carrying cases - they look tiny compared to KR or Battlefoam. After seeing my Feldherr bag, a player in my Armada group ordered one the next day in anticipation of our upcoming Corellian Conflict campaign.

I use KR Multicase for my X-Wing and Dust Tactics minis, and while it's a great storage system, it's bulkier and easily costs double what I'm paying for Feldherr on Amazon. The foam quality is similar between Feldherr and KR Multicase, with a slight edge to KR in stiffness. The transport bag quality is also the same (stitching, material, clips, etc...).

The big difference is the added protection from the KR cardboard boxes that store inside the KR bag, and the hard support liners inside the walls of the KR bag itself. While the Feldherr bag is compact and lightweight, it wouldn't offer much protection vs a heavy fall or someone accidentally stepping on it so I'm a bit more careful with where I put it. So far, no broken antennas on my VSDs!

I use some really cheap (£4 I think?) boxes from Lidl in the UK. Just one holds all the squadrons from the core, both packs, S&V, some extras, and I expect will hold the second squadron packs once I get round to painting them. There's not much room for them to move so I don't worry about damage / paint jobs;

The bigger ships I've unfortunately not found an ideal solution for yet and they live either in the core box or on the shelves!

I also use them for my small base X-Wing ships. Bigger ones stay in their plastic for transport.

IMG_0453.jpg

I use the Core set box (for the bases and tokens/cards/etc) and a single basic Army Transport case to carry around:

1x Imperial Star Destroyer

2x Victory

1x Gladiator

2x Raiders

1x Imperial Squadrons 1

1x Liberty

1x Assault Frigate

1x Nebulon B

3x Corvettes

1x Rebels Squadrons 1

1x Rogues and Villains

Plus room for a couple of more Capitol ships.

Core set box is great, otherwise I only use cardboard boxes for ships and boxes of pins and medicines for tokens. I also like the plastic bags used for packing in every expansion, they are great to hold obstacles and cards. And generally I don't like to disassemble my ships and squadrons. I'm too afraid that the pins will break when I assemble them...

My core set box is for everything but the ships and stands, in ziplock bags (or deck boxes for the cards).

All the squadrons and the cap ships that use peg stands (Raider, Cr90, Neb-B) are kept with the ship assembled on the peg in the various foam trays, I just slide the ship off the base. Even though the connector would be kinda overwhelming on the pegged cap ships, I wish every small ship came on the flight stands the Pelta, Gladiator and Arquitens have, as I can't see those ever breaking.

I have feldherr foam and battle foam. Feldheer is great solution if you are simple taking your fleet to and from your car. However, I take public transit which makes battle foam a better solution for me.

Also, the printable boxes seems to be a really great storage solution if you have a little extra time. I see people at tournaments and I am always amazed at how much they can pack and how organized they are using those boxes.

My Armada collection is getting too big to carry around anymore so I've started using some aluminium carry cases that I came across in a bottle shop when they were running a promotion on Tequila, there's enough room for 400-800pt fleets.

For the cards I'm using some 14 pocket card sleeves used for X-Wing, if you turn therm side ways you can slide the ship card into where the pilot cards normally go and the upgrade cards fit into the smaller pockets.

I'll be using this system for when I travel to tourneys and hopefully CC campaign games.

I got an " 'ard Case" from Games Workshop (a pelican case built to hold Warhammer Minis) which is just the right size for squadrons, and broken down ship bases / pegs / miniatures. ISDs and the like can ride on top with little to no issue. The other half stores all the tokens and rulers and things I need.

Previously I just went with my Armada box, and that worked pretty darn well, but I had to fly to Worlds.

I was just doing some thinking while on the Feldherr website, I'm trying to maximize my store and looking at getting some more trays. I got looking at the compartment box, the small one you can get. Something about it was tickling my memory, something about the size. It looks like the same size as a Plano box I have here. I grab the box, grab a bag and drop it in. Perfect fit!

So Feldherr half size trays are the same outside dimensions as a Plano 3650 tackle box.

I've used these trays for most of my small ships at one point or another. I was able to fit six MC-30's in one, eight Raiders in another, with all the bases, dials and base plates. Plus about three sets of Rogues and Villains.

Rebel collection, with lots of room to grow.

Imperial collection, with two Raiders under the two Interdictors, and two Arquitens on top of an ISD. Space for another ISD saved - would buy one but I'm waiting for the next wave's announcement.

Covered with the cases' included egg crate sheets for protection.

The cases are $20 each with a coupon at Harbor Freight, and the black ones come with 2" pluck foam and an egg crate foam topper:

I also use Games Plus (or Sabol or Portable Warfare, they're all the same size) foam for my Armada. I've been slowly transitioning all my foam to that size. I've been pleased with the quality and price, overall.

I use KR cases. Soft foam, relatively cheap. These cases have protected my X-Wing models for a while now, and I am going to order one for Armada now that I finally made the plunge.

Ard has the cheapest (and best) solution. Exactly what I do.

Cheap upholstering foam and cheap plastic containers. I'm partial to the stack lock containers Target sells so that as your fleet expands you just lock a new container onto the stack. Keeps everything in one easy to carry tower of plastic.

Sure it's a little time intensive when you first do it, but you'll never find a better way to store your ships. All you do is sit down with your ships, foam, a marker, and an exacto while you watch a show or something and just mark and cut slots for your ships. It's mostly just triangles and ovals, nothing complicated for the most part. You'll be done before you know it.

Those premade foam trays have a ton of dead zones. You can tetris your stuff into your custom foam, fitting practically an entire faction into an 8x12 tray, depending on your collection. And your ships will be more secure since you can really wedge stuff into the foam if you cut your holes on the smallish side and store most ships on their side.

Feldherr foam for me, too. I have a full suite of it for my X-wing stuff. When I got into Armada, it was a quick decision to go that route again. Everything is neat and protected, and the trays make it easy to grab what I need for a game in the store, without having to reorganize or take everything. The squadrons trays are especially good, now that there's a whole other wave of fighters to get. I'm ordering more shortly, in advance of the wave actually becoming available here...

I see the Feldherr foam, it looks nice. But what if someone (like me) doesn't want two of every large/medium ship? You're kinda stuck wasting space and/or money with doubling up correct?

Battlefoam or on Amazon Feldherr is the place for Cut foam for Armada I think.

I use Battlefoam for X-Wing and it has probably save lots and lots of damage to ships; easy to transport. But it is a good $$$ input to be sure; I want to insure there is not another option.

I have Feldherr foam in a Rigid tool box. I have a little room for a few more small trays. I can attach another tool box in the future if I need to. I will try and add pictures when I get home.

I have a mixed setup, Feldherr foam and bags, Plano tackle boxes and oddly enough an old Charon Studios Skirmish Pack which fits four stacks of Feldherr foam. I also have several of Willi's microhangers for ships I don't have room for.

See Feldherr comment above, maybe you know something I don't. How do Plano or Stanley boxes work with these ships? They look to large and oddly shaped to work well.....educate me.

Thanks guys!!

I use the Plano for my X-Wing and they are generally a round hole for an oval peg. Not much fit perfectly, but you are spending $5-50 for an option vs $100+ for Battlefoam/Feldherr. I bought a collection that already had Feldherr, I have 2 things that I do not own 2 of the ships, the ISD and Home One. I use the 2nd ISD slot for my Indicator and the second Home One is empty. I like that you can custom cut the Battlefoam for your collection; I hate their precut Xwing foam, I do not have 9 Y-Wings (or 27 since you can triple stack them) nor will I ever. I don't like the canvas bags for the foam either, I prefer a hard case. I did not go with the Feldherr hard case because it would be full with my current collection and no room for the current wave.

Using SirWilli's papercraft boxes now. Not done building everything but so far i am pleased with the results, plus it feeds into my arts n crafts side so i rather enjoy the work. Busted out some tools i havnt touched in so long they had a caked layer of dust on them lol.

Not going to bother making his token boxes as i'd much rather leave those in baggies (plus i have a hard plastic mini-box for active gaming tokens/dice anyway) but all the ship boxes are wonderful so far. Had to make the Liberty box twice since for some dumb reason i didnt cut the reinforce templates apart and applied them as one piece lol...kinda wrecked that lid trying to put that on.

SirWilli's boxes are great, but I too have had my cheapy printer crap out and I fear it was from shoehorning 110 card stock into it. I am thinking of switching to Game Plus, since I have been using it for 40K and have been overall pretty happy there. Does anyone have any images of their Armada stuff in the Game Plus trays? What thickness trays are best?

i use the 110 cardstock and i dont have any issues, but im also feeding it one at a time lol. I only got a cheapo Canon MG2920 (was it MG? think it was MG yeah) and it LOVES to cut the bottom of the page off so i usually gotta measure out half the box myself, but it works nontheless.

I just pulled the trigger on a big box of the Game Plus pluck foam and a bag when the foam was on sale for like 45% off. I'm in the process of putting my X-wing into it and haven't gotten into the Armada yet.

It looks like I'll be using the 1" for the Nebs and Cr-90s, and MC30s, and raider, the 1.5" for the MC80s and I think the Gladiators and Inderdictor and flotillas (on their stems.) I think the 2.5" for the ISD and Victories. Haven't figured out the situation for the ship bases and squadrons and misc. I want to do the squadrons assembled and that will be at least the 1.5".

I went with the pluck foam as I could organize my own way for what I have without wasted space. I haven't decided if I'll keep using the little plano containers I have for tokens. I probably "spent too much" but if you don't get what you want you didn't get a deal.

That's kind of what I was thinking. But I also wondered if higher thickness would be better so that ships can be put in 'sideways' so to speak. How wide is an ISD? If it's 4" of less, then a tray of the thinker foam, which costs the exact same on Miniature Market, can hold a lot more. A side on ISD would have a smaller footprint then a flat down one. Heck, a CR90 would likely only need 1 square of foam and go in 'pointing down' so to speak. Nebs would likely only require 2 squares. You could get a decent amount into 1 tray this way. Has anyone tried that?

Edited by Xindell

From what I have witnessed with CNinja's games plus foam, the 2.5" fits the ISD's and the AFMKii laying flat (as flat as that **** AFMKii can sit with that stupid phallus) and the 1" fits the cr90, the neb B (Laying sideways) and the mc30's. The squads go laying down in the 1.5" at about 10-12 per tray. I'll take some pics when I get mine figured out.

I also bought at the 45% off sale, so I got what I needed for about $70, with the bag.
