Transporting Your Fleet

By Vineheart01, in Star Wars: Armada

So what are some good ways to move your fleets around?

Usually for any miniature game i have found good ways to move my models around without resorting to the uber expensive and usually not ideally arranged foam trays. Armada though gives me a unique problem: squadrons.

Currently i have all my squadrons off their posts and sitting in a tray, imps/rebels/large squads separated out. Great and compact but takes forever to get my squads out as a result lol. Im afraid i will break'm if i use a bag like i do with the Ships, and when stored with their stands they take up an immense amount of space.

Anybody got any good ideas to transport squads around?

I build my fleet before leaving for the game shop and keep all my ships, squads, bag of cards, bag of dials, maneuver and range tools, and small tackle box for tokens in a cardboard box. Makes it very easy to just bring one box into the shop

the games plus pluck foams are what I'm changing to since I have seen CNinja's setup:

You just missed a massive sale at X-mas on these though...but if that's too pricey, the sir Willibalds boxes are my backup....

Still need a box to carry them in, but he has a pretty decent carrier box you can build for free too. just costs you the card stock....

I have Feldherr foam in a Rigid tool box. I have a little room for a few more small trays. I can attach another tool box in the future if I need to. I will try and add pictures when I get home.

Thought about going the pluck route, i had to do that with my Tau since battlesuits are an odd size/shape (especially with custom poses) and it works great.

i might just have to say eff it and go with foam. I was trying to avoid it because it adds so much bulk its ridiculous. My Tau army foam trays stack up to be 5ft tall lol (excluding the GIANT SUIT which has no box he's too big for one).

Currently i just use a tote i got from Staples lol. Its ...i wanna say 10"w by 16"l by 20"t? something like that. Its primarily the squadrons that bug me as they take me a good while to find the right models in the pile and put them on their pegs that make me wanna reconsider this transport idea. Xwing is in a tacklebox but armada wouldnt contour to that very well lol.

I have two core set box's I transport my main fleet selection in, and a large amazon box if I need to transport everything at once. I don't think its really necessary to get fancy foam to transport the ships as they really aren't that fragile, except the fighters. Just be careful not to let them get tossed around.

I don't transport my fleet anymore.

I have decided that the game is too pretty to be packed away in a storage case. Everything is full-time assembled and on display. I only pack what I'm going to fly, and use a very small transport container for that.

Feldherr foam for me, too. I have a full suite of it for my X-wing stuff. When I got into Armada, it was a quick decision to go that route again. Everything is neat and protected, and the trays make it easy to grab what I need for a game in the store, without having to reorganise or take everything. The squadrons trays are especially good, now that there's a whole other wave of fighters to get. I'm ordering more shortly, in advance of the wave actually becoming available here...

The plano storage cases or any similar tackle case I've found to be very helpful. I splurged and bought a whole bunch of Feldherr foam (not cheap, but good quality and waaaaaay less expensive than Battlefoam). Maybe a little over two hundred bucks got me storage and transport for:

2 x ISDs

4 x VSDs

4 x GSDs

4 x Raiders (with two more just tucked in)

2 x Gozantis

2 x Interdictors

10 x TIE Fighters

8 x TIE Interceptors/Bombers/Advanceds

4 x Every Imp R&V

2 x Home Ones

2 x Libertys

4 x AFs

2 x MC30s

6 x CR90s

6 x Neb-Bs

2 x Medium Transports

8 x Every Reb Fighter (minus Pack II)

4 x Every Reb R&V (6 YT-2400s)

I have my tokens, dice, etc. in Plano cases, and carry the whole shebang in the giant duffelbag that Feldherr sells. I don't necessarily carry this everywhere, but $200 for a way to move a very large collection of ships? I'll take it.

I use the games plus pluck foam plus with 4ish bags for all the ships.

I dont do that because

1) We are still trying to get people into Armada, so its quite common my imperial stuff gets borrowed or rebel stuff im not using.

2) I goto the game store after work and its out of the way if i go home first. My xwing/armada stuff just sits in my car.

I only transport what I need for tournaments now. I do have a toolbox from Harbor Freight to carry everything however for local demos. With the 1" pluck built into the toolbox for ships, and a 2nd toolbox loaded with the tuck boxes for fighters.

Battlefoam or on Amazon Feldherr is the place for Cut foam for Armada I think.

I have Feldherr foam in a Rigid tool box. I have a little room for a few more small trays. I can attach another tool box in the future if I need to. I will try and add pictures when I get home.

I'm curious, which Rigid tool box are you using? I've been through the local Home Despot several times and none really worked for me.

I have a mixed setup, Feldherr foam and bags, Plano tackle boxes and oddly enough an old Charon Studios Skirmish Pack which fits four stacks of Feldherr foam. I also have several of Willi's microhangers for ships I don't have room for.

I have this one. http://m.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-22-in-Pro-Tool-Box-Black-222570/205440481?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7CG%7C0%7CG-BASE-PLA-AllProducts%7C&gclid=CjwKEAiA-rfDBRDeyOybg8jd2U4SJAAoE5XqTn8qIOjz_c4o5GjjI2KtE9hk3ryhl37Zd1hKgOHMBhoCdoPw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I got it on sale for $30. I trimmed some of the rails that hold the tray and it fits 3 Feldherr wide perfectly. I did find a company that makes foam to fit all the Rigid boxes, but you have to cut it out yourself. http://kaizeninserts.com/t/ridgid

I superglue 1mm magnetic sheeting to the bottom of the squadrons and then store them in a metal biscuit tin.

Got the tip from a tyranid player who used to store his 'gaunts in a similar manner, attached to the bottom of the tin and upside-down to the lid.

If you are doing heavy travel like moving house or flying, simply fill the box with packing chips and it's almost indestructible.

Interesting, I'll have to check it out. Thank you for the links and the information.

Step one: tear off VSD antennas. This will alleviate any false hope of preserving them

Step two: cram everything in a plastic bag...

Step three: order more replacements as stuff is lost/broken...

Step four: add one leaking bottle of superglue and shake

Step five: field your own DIY Death Star

Upholstery foam in the plastic doodad box of your choice. You can get large rolls of the 1" stuff at Joann's for like $20 (make sure you use their ubiquitous coupons), then use an exacto to cut it to exactly the shape and arrangement you want, trim it to fit inside your box, done. Way cheaper than any other custom foam option I've seen, and because it's totally custom, you can have exactly what you want.

For squadrons, I store them on the tree but off the post/stand. Cut some straight lines and some y shapes in the foam so you can just push the tree straight down into the foam, and they hold great. Stores them very compactly, and they don't roll around chipping paint or getting lost.

SirWilli's hanger boxes will save those antenna's. Neither of my VSDs have broken yet!

I use Feldherr. They are simply the best for foam storage or carry. I'm still surprised by how much I can put into one of the foam trays and bags. Most of the trays also have space for two of each ship and even if you don't have two of those ships you can always put another ship in the same spot.

If I wasn't invested into Battlefoam from a previous game, I'd swap to Feldherr. 2 day fullfillment from Amazon, and people tell me the quality is basically the same as Battlefoam.

My VSD antenna broke before i even had anything other than the starter box lol
