I have since added two more layers, and haven't quite settled into how everything works. Thinking of moving all the stuff that isn't squadrons to one of the lower boxes, or possibly moving everything that IS squadrons to one of the lower boxes.

Feldherr foam for me, too. I have a full suite of it for my X-wing stuff. When I got into Armada, it was a quick decision to go that route again. Everything is neat and protected, and the trays make it easy to grab what I need for a game in the store, without having to reorganize or take everything. The squadrons trays are especially good, now that there's a whole other wave of fighters to get. I'm ordering more shortly, in advance of the wave actually becoming available here...
I see the Feldherr foam, it looks nice. But what if someone (like me) doesn't want two of every large/medium ship? You're kinda stuck wasting space and/or money with doubling up correct?
Battlefoam or on Amazon Feldherr is the place for Cut foam for Armada I think.
I use Battlefoam for X-Wing and it has probably save lots and lots of damage to ships; easy to transport. But it is a good $$$ input to be sure; I want to insure there is not another option.
I have Feldherr foam in a Rigid tool box. I have a little room for a few more small trays. I can attach another tool box in the future if I need to. I will try and add pictures when I get home.
I have a mixed setup, Feldherr foam and bags, Plano tackle boxes and oddly enough an old Charon Studios Skirmish Pack which fits four stacks of Feldherr foam. I also have several of Willi's microhangers for ships I don't have room for.
See Feldherr comment above, maybe you know something I don't. How do Plano or Stanley boxes work with these ships? They look to large and oddly shaped to work well.....educate me.
Thanks guys!!
It all depends on how many ships you want to store/lug around with you. For the record I've got three Feldherr bags (one for X-wing, two for Armada) and enough Plano tackle boxes to equip a professional fisherman)
Feldherr:
-Great for big ships, ISD's, AF MKII's and MC-80's
-Limited use when it comes to small ships, unless you only have two CR-90's/Neb-b's or four MC-30's/Raiders (this is with shoving two extra bases in the tray)
-Fighter trays are great for taking a prebuild fleet to play, but only fit so many fighters per tray
-More expensive when compared to Plano boxes, limited number of suppliers (Feldherr, Amazon and Ebay) (When I've ordered direct from Feldherr I paid nearly double with shipping per tray)
-Can buy sets with a really well made bag.
Plano:
-Great for multiple small ships as well as tokens and dials
-Inexpensive when compared to foam (Feldherr/Battlefoam) and found almost everywhere
-Store multiple squadron packs in one box
-Limited use with larger ships (ISD, VSD and AF MKII) unless you can find a deep divider-less box.
-Fixed spaces only fit certain size ships, see above
-Unless you buy a tackle box with trays, you need to find something to carry these in.
Ultimately, get what you like and what's in your budget. I'm going to be mixing and matching, small ships in Plano 3650 and medium ships in Feldherr.
Evidently my printer is retarded. Its idea of an 8by11 standard paper is actually slightly smaller. Made boxes for a VSD, Gladiator, 2 Raiders, Interdictor, Assault Frigate, Liberty, Home One, 2 MC30s, 2 Nebs, 2 CR90s, and 2 Reb Flotillas....only the Assault Frigate and the Reb Flotillas fit in their box lol. Literally every other box was off by about 1/8th an inch to fit.
Printed using "different paper" and while a lot of the edges are clipped off slightly, i made another VSD box and it fits perfectly. FML lol thats a sunday wasted....wonder why the Assault Frigate fits though...
I might invest in a new printer this month. This little thing has ticked me off on more than one occasion, i actually had to reformat my Resume because it kept cutting half the bottom line off lol. Buy 30USD printer, get 30USD mechanical poodoo...

Did you print the PDF at actual size or fit to page? Fit to page would have the image slightly smaller on each sheet. When I did the Assault Frigate box it was rather loose and rattled around inside the box a bit.

I would bet this is the problem as well as I've done it two or three times by mistake. It makes enough of a difference to stop the ships fitting. Shame you've made so many before discovering the problem!

As posted before, I use Plano boxes to carry everything. I've recently reorganized my stuff and have more space. I'm also waiting for a Feldherr AF2 tray to try in the top of the 1374 to clean that up.

SirWilli's boxes are great, but I too have had my cheapy printer crap out and I fear it was from shoehorning 110 card stock into it. I am thinking of switching to Game Plus, since I have been using it for 40K and have been overall pretty happy there. Does anyone have any images of their Armada stuff in the Game Plus trays? What thickness trays are best?
I just pulled the trigger on a big box of the Game Plus pluck foam and a bag when the foam was on sale for like 45% off. I'm in the process of putting my X-wing into it and haven't gotten into the Armada yet.
It looks like I'll be using the 1" for the Nebs and Cr-90s, and MC30s, and raider, the 1.5" for the MC80s and I think the Gladiators and Inderdictor and flotillas (on their stems.) I think the 2.5" for the ISD and Victories. Haven't figured out the situation for the ship bases and squadrons and misc. I want to do the squadrons assembled and that will be at least the 1.5".
I went with the pluck foam as I could organize my own way for what I have without wasted space. I haven't decided if I'll keep using the little plano containers I have for tokens. I probably "spent too much" but if you don't get what you want you didn't get a deal.
That's kind of what I was thinking. But I also wondered if higher thickness would be better so that ships can be put in 'sideways' so to speak. How wide is an ISD? If it's 4" of less, then a tray of the thinker foam, which costs the exact same on Miniature Market, can hold a lot more. A side on ISD would have a smaller footprint then a flat down one. Heck, a CR90 would likely only need 1 square of foam and go in 'pointing down' so to speak. Nebs would likely only require 2 squares. You could get a decent amount into 1 tray this way. Has anyone tried that?
The ISD on its side is 4.5" on its then tallest dimension. The pluck foam only comes up to 4" deep so it will have to go on its keel meaning the 2.5".
Yes, you could use less area if you put the bows in first on Nebs and CR90s and so on but the Nebs are about an inch longer than the CR90s. The Gaming Plus bag is also limited by height so you'll have to compromise based on how you want to organize things and how many things you have.
Two 1" blocks use 2.5" of your height. The Neb is like 3" (I measured quickly last night without my reading glasses it might be longer) so that needs 3.25" of your height. The base of each block adds 1/4" to the depth of the foam i.e. 1"+1.25" of space in the bag. So you can get more ships in a single block but still use more of your space. I want to keep posts attached to the small based ships so flat seems a better option to me. You could put the ships in bow first but not perpendicular to the base I guess getting less height use at more length but you can't really pull out just half the height of a pluck section in the block.
I was essentially buying at two for one so just figured how much budget overall I had and ordered a variety till I hit the number. I'm still planning the whole thing out and should be adding ships to my collection this week.

I like the idea of keeping the posts attached to the small ships, as those pegs seems very easy to break. I haven't had one go on me yet but I fear it's only a matter of time. So yeah, the initial idea of laying them on their sides (and the ISD on it's belly) is likely better, even if it means buying a few more trays than otherwise planned. I guess I just need to make up a spreadsheet and start planning. That's how I planned out my 40K and it seemed to work.

Nice pictures and descriptions of your storage conquests!
I guess I'm either over-cautious or more violent. I take my games to the far reaches of the universe; and when transporting them, I would destroy them. I cannot see having ships free to move in open plastic areas, even with a bit of foam on the end of a ship; nor would my ships survive traveling loose with matching ships...you must be a careful bloke, I'm obviously not. I need a more secure setup, or the fleet will be lost before the battle begins.

Yup. Printer wasnt saving my settings, thats why the Assault Frigate fit because thats the first one i printed and i unchecked that, ignored it for the rest.
Fortunately both from practice and learning a glue stick > glue bottle for this i managed to remake most of the boxes in about 3 hours. Granted, i work lazily and i also ate during that time lol.
Tossed what i have made (all except the Interdictor and a box for the Pelta made up) in the core box and i think im going to have to make some dividers to keep them snug lol. Meh thats not that hard.

I'd really prefer to keep as much assembled as possible for ease of set-up and tear down but that is just not practical for the medium and large based ships. You also have to make room for the posts in one way or another.
Squadrons specifically i want to keep on the posts. The small ships i dont really have a problem with but the squadrons take FOREVER to assemble. Base is quick n easy but putting the 3 ships on the post is horrid.

They're actually very secure, and don't really move around at all. I took the foam out of the bins to show how stuff was laid out. The ISD's now have an Interdictor in with them, and don't move at all, and the small ships stacked up don't really have any parts that can break off (plus they're covered with foam also and it prevents them from moving).

Ahhhh, that makes sense. Gotta keep them buggars from moving.
I figure, if you spend the jack that these collections cost, then skimp on the storage/travel component so your investment gets damaged, you're dumb and just not logical. I'm leaning towards pre-cut, and I only have experience with Battlefoam. I did get with my Core Set a gift that included the BattleFoam insert for the Core Set box.
It's neat, holds the entire Core easily with enough room for the Imperial Squadron Expansion Pack and extra die. I'm not sure it'll hold much else. Although, I emailed them and for $2.00 they'll send me a foam insert shape of the Victory that allows you to put 2 in the super deep Victory shape.
Still pondering.....for the new crack that I'll eventually have. But I don't see having two of every medium/large ship; so Feldherr doesn't seem like a great idea.
Edited by clanofwolvesSee thats the kind of storage i want to avoid.
1) Costs about 40% of your hobby
2) Adds a tremendous amount of bulk.
I HAD to do that for my 40k because my Tau suits are too dang fragile to not have that much padding everywhere. Transporting that army is annoying because i doubled my storage size to accommodate the extra foam.
Xwing, with the exception of Bwings, all the models are very sturdy and have few things poking out that can break. Armada ships are even better, i literally had them in a gallon ziplock back with no issues lol. Armada squadrons is the issue
My friend bought that stuff for his Armada collection. He has 2 ISDs, but otherwise has a similar sized collection. His foam storage is nearly double my file cabinet box in size and cost way more. Though i admit i think the box i have is a bad storage vessel for the microhanger boxes lol its slanted edges kinda mess with things. Meant for papers, not models.
For SirWillibald's microhangers try 4L Really Useful Boxes - meant for A4 paper. Just the right height to store them, stackable and I can even (just about) fit one in the shoulder bag I use for work. Normally I just use a smaller plastic tub for my fleet unless I'm taking ISD's.
I know it's an investment, but my ArmyTransport has served be faithfully for at least a decade, for any kind of game you can think of, from pewter 40k models to Star Wars Armada.
On amazon they have those $70 cases for transporting Armada. Does anyone know if they are worth it?
If your just hauling to the store, I think a box/plano case is fine.
But I do travel to cons, and for that, having a real bag with hard sides, cut foam to immobilize my models. Additionally in general bought bags are the correct size to allow as carry on as checking your fragile mini’s seem unwise.
This is a cheap hobby. If you feel it is expensive get a real hobby, like classic cars, or a boat. Gaming is so cheap, why would you short yourself?

Feldherr? I bought one of each, if you look back a page I posted a break down on them versus Plano trays.

Or photography, what I spent on a telephoto lens last year would set you up with custom foam and a nice size collection.
/dislike due to the implication that Gaming is not a "real hobby"...

Feldherr does look cool, and the case would distinguish it from my X-Wing (in Battlefoam C4s), but the issue is having trays with two of everything. I plan to have 1 Imperial Class SD, 1 Gladiator Class, etc.... I wonder why they didn't set up their Wave I tray to have 1 of everything and allow people to but two trays of each to have the doubles; that seems more logical to me.....

Exactly!
My current tournament list is being transported in a Really Useful 4L box full of SirWillibald micro hangars
1 flotilla, 6 squadrons, 3 small ships and 1 medium ship
damage deck and all accessories
