Alliance Tactical Carrier "Razorback" LAAT/C

By Refugeanoth, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

With the recent clarification I figure I'd post the modification and corresponding mechanics I've been working on for my HOTAC campaign.

Sister ship to the Alliance Assault Craft. The Alliance Tactical Carrier was a heavily modified LAAT/c outfitted for space travel and rapid deployment of tactical emplacements, such as alliance appropriated AT-TE's, ion storm generators, and wild weasel shuttles. As a result of the substantial retrofit of the craft, after deploying its payload, the ATC transitions into an incredibly nimble fighter for its size and can contribute greatly to combat operations in the field.

LOTS of hacksaw work went into this spacepig and I pale to think how much I spent on the models to mod it, but the mechanics work great in-game and the ship is tremendously entertaining to fly. I'd love to hear some recommendations on different emplacements that would make sense for the rebellion to use with this!

Crikey,

How many models have you cut up to make that !

Looks great.......I think I can see four different types ?

And what is the base model Clone wars Gunship ?

Is that the small Revell Snap kit they bought out a good few years ago.

Be great to hear a break down of how you made your models.

great job on the custom work. :D

All the best,

Barry.

It was 4 models if you include the OTHER gunship doors that I used to make the front shovel sides for the cockpit, good eye!

The base ship is the hotwheels republic gunship.

I'd love to get my hands on something of similar size that was made out of plastic instead of diecast.... Because my arm is still sore from sawing through that stuff with a hacksaw. An experience I'm not eager to repeat.

This one was relatively straightforward if not grueling. The model literally holds together with a single screw that connects the diecast wings and body with a plastic base that acts as the bottom of the craft. The engines and rocket tubes are held in place with a single plastic peg that lodges them in place when everything is screwed in. The most difficult part was just sawing through the remarkably thick diecast sides of the main body to create the opening where the walker will be held (when I get around to making one) For right now, it's represented with a top-down template that you just put on top of an asteroid when it's deployed.

After cutting the side doors out and cutting forward so the space terminated right behind the the cockpit area, I used the lower portion of an ARC-170 turned backwards and sanded the edges to mesh into the slot in the undercarriage. Fits in there like it was made for it and required little to no effort to fit it. The big primary engines are off a G-1A starfighter that I took off and flipped upside down, then drilled down through the previous retaining pin and used a long screw and the existing screw holes for the model to mount it flush. I also used the lower portion of the G-1A flipped upside down and reversed for the upper part of the spine of the ship, and then used the nosecone from an ARC-170 to draw up the whole hunched back look of the craft. I used the rocket tubes in their stock location, just reversed in their sockets and modified to represent engine nacelles that supplement the main ones and they perfectly lined up beneath the mist hunter engines. At this point, I flipped the door panels upside down and reversed them and gorilla glued them directly to the sides of the front area of the ship. I mounted the wing engines from a HWK beneath the wings and mounted the top engines to the top of the wings and mounted the gun to the top to cover the screw area that I had used to hold everything together. Supplemented everything with gorilla glue and painted it up and that was all she wrote!

That's so wackadoodle! In other words, it's so crazy. I like it. I like it a lot.

Was it fairly planned out, or more of an improvisation with a general sense of where you wanted it to end up? Either way, you have a remarkable ship.

Thanks! I like to think that most of the rebels ships would be held together with hope and duct tape and I think I got that part down pat with this haha!

I've been wanting to do an LAAT/c refit since I finished my Alliance Assault Craft LAAT refit and made the card and dial and everything else and tested the ship and emplacements to see how they would mesh with the campaign. Worked out well and was really fun to fly and I already had a mission in the works for rescuing clone wars era mothballed relics from an old republic ARC trooper testing ground, so it was an easy fit into the mix. Had ARC-170 parts, a spare HWK and a spare G-1A and figured I'd see what I could make out of it all that would be something the Alliance would hodgepodge together to make use out of. The color was the only thing I really pre-planned. I have a 70's era millennium falcon that I inherited as a kid and played with endlessly out in the florida sun all through my childhood. As a result, it has a very particular yellowish goldish color to the plastic from age and the sun that is so unique and reminds me so much of my childhood that I wanted something to fly that would represent that.

Bloody Hell your cutting up metal models !

Well the plastic versions are actually small scale Revell snap kits.

The Plastic version will save your wrists !

I bought a few when they came out, and i'm still using the parts on my models now.........

When i Had seen what you had done with your Model, It made me smile as I had used similar parts in my GI-A Conversion.

The Republic Gunship has always been a very cool design.

Nice to see someone utilising it !

I dig that bigtime. Very cool design and could easily be translated into xwing I reckon :P And yeah, the gunship is by far one of my favorite designs, which makes sense since it's modeled after my favorite helicopter of all time, the Mil-Mi24 Hind.

I like to think that cutting through the metal model builds character lol certainly felt easier sawing through plastic after cutting up that thing.

The yellow one looks completely overdone...even Warhammer-y.
