Heff the blocker plus....?

By gennataos, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I like the idea of Heff gumming up the works with that large base. With Hera crew and title, being able to basically sit in place and turn around at will could be a lot of fun. The thought is Heff and Rey hurtle headlong toward a primary target. Heff blocks, probably having focused, then getting the needed target lock as his bump free action to fire off the APT. Between a typical Rey/Finn attack followed by Heff's APT, I'm hopefully blowing up most aces, seriously damaging beefier ships. After that alpha strike, Heff's days are probably numbered, but that's kind of okay because Rey can usually handle herself. Depending on positioning, Rey could possibly sloop from side to side of Heff while he just sits there, being a pain.

I'm not 100% on who to pair with Heff, I've thought about a Ghost or Miranda.

Corran: PTL, FCS, R2-D2, Engine (48)

Biggs: R4-D6, Integrated (26)

Heff: Pivot Wing, Zeb, Chopper, Tactical Jammer (or enhanced scopes depending on meta/preference) (26)

It it competitive? Maybe, but certainly not at the same level as the top-tier squads.

I find this list REALLY depends on getting Corran into the endgame to be successful. It's really not a squad you can just pick up and win with, but flown properly it's got some decent potential. Also, I'm not convinced by any U-Wing build that is more that 30ish points at the moment because their "0-k turn is unreliable when trying to keep guns on target and without Biggs they die a bit faster than I'd like.

This is my Rogue One list that I put together after seeing the movie. Heff here doesn't have nearly as much stuff on it as yours but the trimming was necessary to get the full titled Ghost. I wish I could put Zeb on Heff but he's the cheapest shuttle!

VCX-100: · Kanan Jarrus (38)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Sensor Jammer (4)

Ion Projector (2)

Have you flown that yet? I like the idea of a cheap Heff blocker, but he doesn't pose much of a threat. Seems like folks would dance around him and focus down on Kanan. Kanan has a ton of defensive tools available, but I wonder if he'd be able to keep many enemy ships at range 1-2 for his ability if big ol' Heff is out in front of him.

I've not flown mine yet, but I plan to tonight. I'm excited about the possibilities. I can't imagine even a kitted-out Fenn Rau would want to go head-to-head with an APT plus Rey backing it up. There's also the possibility, if I don't like the head-to-head matchup, I could have Heff bank-boost past a bumping ship. That could even lead to Heff blocking multiple ships, denying more actions.

I've paired Heff with Chopper and Jyn a few times as a way to buff other ships. It works really well when followed directly by a large damage dealer like a ghost.

I really like that idea with a Kanan Ghost. Did you use Kanan? If so, how often did you get his ability to fire with Heff blocking?

Heff was kind of an abject failure in this build. Played two games with this list today. The first game, I got the alpha strike off just as planned. Unfortunately, it was on Dengar, and while he was heavily damaged, he was alive to do Dengar stuff. Heff died shortly afterwards, I flew Rey like crap and conceded not long after.

Second game, Heff never got the APTs off and probably did nothing other than provide a minor nuisance. Rey did great and cleared the board aside from Dengar, then she got critted with no-attack Blinded Pilot when she likely would have won the game on her very next attack. She died the next turn.

The first game, I just flew really poorly after the first encounter. The second game, I flew so much better, but Heff proved a non-factor. The inability to do any sort of K turn is really limiting on the U-wing. I gave it a shot,...I'll wait for much better/dedicated players to come up with an effective U-wing list.
