Painted Descent is best Descent

That said I still probably spent more time on them than necessary but I am off to a good start with my first few groups of baddies. Especially proud of my brown spiders.

Nice work on the spiders...I totally want to squish the crap out of them. Good job. :)

I've said a few times that it's just Descent, I'm not going crazy with the paint jobs. Higher levels of highlight and OSL aren't really noticeable on the table for Descent over what I've done. That said, these would look significantly different without highlighting, far more washed (lol) out. There is at least one level of highlighting everywhere, with another on metal areas and extra on certain figures that I felt like doing a little more on.

The nice thing is that if I ever decide to turn these from game pieces into art pieces I can just pick up any piece and continue adding more layers of highlighting and object source lighting to get them there. I doubt I'll ever bother though.

Different strokes for different folks.

I personally don't care if it's "Just" descent or if it's "OMGWTFBBQ" warhammer figures, I strive to paint them all to the same level. There's also something to be said for the simpler, more old school D&D style of the Descent minis compared to the cluster@#$@ of obscene detail on Warhammer minis these days.

My comment wasn't meant to be condescending, just that on some of the larger surfaces, the models look a bit flat since there aren't as strong exaggerations of shadow and highlights. Might also be partically due to the lighting in the photo as well.

No worries, I didn't take it as condescending :)

The lighting on these shots is indeed bad and I'm just grabbing quick shots with my phone. Once I finish everything I'll set my photography area back up and light things properly, good backdrops, and use a real camera to make a nice finished album with. I have the gear for full high quality macro work, but don't want to do it piecemeal.

These models in general don't thrill me. I just like the game and like painted figures better than plain plastic in games that are all about the figures like Descent. If I don't really like the model I don't have the motivation to spend excess time on it. My custom 40K marines and terminators got almost 2 weeks of work, each. Custom moulding and hand crafted 3d flamework, etc. Descent models just don't interest me enough to put that much time into is all. Each to their own though!

Crusade of the Forgotten. Have not painted in forever, definitely a bit rusty, but still better than nothing!

Love those!

Ooh those naga, excellent and just right as a match to the box art, seems to give them a kind of magical glow- what paints and method did you use to get the colours just right?

May do mine different colours (with one based on the mistress of serpents) but would love at least one in the box colours (I have the first edition naga too, prefer the new design but these may suit a variation- they look a bit like there's a human trapped inside!)

Then there's the detail on Seer Kel's peacock feathers- wow. Impressed.

Thanks! I use Vallejo Game Color, but it’s easy to find a conversion chart for equivalent color in all the popular ranges.

For the Naga, it’s only 3 colors. Squid pink for the under scales, Warlord Purple for the mid scales (all the dots), and Hexed Lichen for the fins. Then I washed with GW Drakenof Nightshade. After washing I dry brushed pink back on the under scales, and hand dotted Warlord Purple on each and every bloody one of those tiny main scales. Be sparing when you do that, you just want a dot in the center of each scale so you keep some of the blue wash as a transition. Then brushed the Hexed Lichen around on the fins. Mainly along the edges. Since the wash darkens everything, you can get away with highlighting with the same base color.

I’m glad you like them and Kel. Because I hate them both 😂 . My wife chose all the colors (she always does, I’m colorblind), but on those 2 in particular (and the ice wyrms, and the shades) they look like crap to my eyes. The Nagas are just boring blue all over, and Kel is this really ugly green. I just painted them by theory since I can’t see hardly any of the colors properly that went into those. On Kel I rebelled and painted the back lower feathers the color green I thought they should be. I was informed that what I chose was fluorescent green and it looked terrible so I gave in and redid it. That’s part of why some of model detail is obscured, to many layers of paint.

Thanks. You should paint a few things in colours that work for you- maybe where the colours whatever entities could be are flexible enough. Or that works for both you and your wife.

I find tiredness is the main enemy of my eyes- they seem to tire faster these days so I sometimes get blurry eyes merely as they tire faster than they used to (think a lot of it's that they dry out faster- keeping them from getting too dry helps), so that will be my main challenge when it comes to painting mine eventually. If/when I get the time 🙂

Oh for sure, I have plenty of figures that don't have source art I want them matched to, I just choose whatever I like for those.

One suggestion to combat eye fatigue with painting is LIGHT! I bought two wall mounted lamps for my painting corner desk that could take 100w LED equivalent bulbs. Made a huge difference. Also, a lighted magnifier really does make a world of difference. A magnifier isn't only for poor vision, it's also about the amount of strain it takes on eyes and mind to process all the tiny detail in some of these figures. I found it reduced fatigue quite a bit, and that's with 20/20 vision. Having the additional movable light is nice as well.

I've had a couple, happiest with this one so far: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016LTTS8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My tip's to keep your eyes moist too - eye drops or I just use water myself making sure my hands are clean first- dry eyes are often a cause of tiredness/ vision going a bit blurry.

And, finally, the last of 2nd edition stuff!

The Kobolds are the part that impresses me the most. I'm slowly chugging away through them and will paint a hero or other monster between each Kobold.

I didn’t find it too bad doing them assembly line style. I did take a week break from painting after finishing them though before doing the heroes 😄

I paint while we're playing because my GF likes to super strategize against me. I just pick a figure and start painting.

Looking good. Which proxies did you use for the familiars? Did you make the summoned stones as they seem too close a match to be proxied, I have some things like that planned just because I like making myself more work hehe.

Super excited for my projects still- got my mammoth finally and also just ordered the other bits for sessions I run of 'The Bleakest Winter' (one of my key RPG scenario writes in progress so as it's a key part I got some kit for when I bring it to the gaming table as D2e doesn't have much natural icy stuff) finally (and that doesn't need painting which is a relief). As I'd delayed this bit of it to get the kit I can pick it up again now.

As mentioned I even managed to get Gata from 1e, who does need painting, probably after some practice on other models as he wasn't cheap and is tiny detailed metal - looks quite a challenge to paint.

So Isheim bound am I.

Well done! 👍 I should really post up some of the work that we've done. Hate to start a new thread. I could post some on here... do you think that would be stepping on toes? Or should I start a whole new thread? Honestly, I don't think that our painting skills deserve a thread of their own. 😂
