Who names their ship that? Silly ship names.

By Mark Caliber, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The ship from our Star Wars campaign was THE SUNRISE CRUSADER. The ship from our current Firefly campaign is THE WANDERING SPIRITS (which works on multiple levels, given the nature of the crew and the fact that they make and sell their own liquor).

Possibly one of my favorite NPC ship names was KLARKE'S LAST MISTAKE. It was previously owned by a small group of mercs led by a guy named Klarke, who betrayed his bounty hunter ally. She wiped out the crew, then took ownership of the ship and renamed it.

My group named their GHTROC 720 "Idiot's Array". They quickly worked out it would be a super common name and kept having to clarify what BOSS reg their ship is to avoid confusion with the dozen other Idiot's Arrays parked in the same shipyard.

Our main ship is named for the pilot PCs mother, reasonable enough. Our backup ship, which our bounty hunter duo uses for bounty hunting business, is the Plan B.

So they're both maternity-related ...

Our first ship was The Black Nebula - YT1300,,,, only because The Black Pearl was taken

Our current ship is The Comet - HWK-1000 - which we were given in payment by people we now know to be part of the rebellion... so sooner or later it'll either bite us in the ass with the Empire, or the Rebellion will ask for 'a favour'

My players just pulled off a heist wherein they took control of a slave transport called the Free Spirit . The captain's humour runs a little dark.

One of the name's the group was throwing around before just keeping the ship's previous name ( Lost Legac y) was...

Sheevz Nuts .

Our group has a Kom'rk-class fighter/transport named Broken Vows in one campaign and a VT-49 Decimator named Tyberos in another.

The Transient Plough , a YT-1300.

A short-lived campaign saw our characters - mine being the pilot/captain - owning the Farseeker , a YG-4210 Light Freighter.

Or, at least, that was its official name. His copilot/gunner drove him up a wall by constantly calling it The Space Tongue instead. :P

Our party includes a Chiss gadgeteer stranded in Imperial space with no means of getting back in touch with her people. Since no one around her has been to Chiss space or speaks the language, every name she comes up with sounds exotic. Only problem is, she's the only one who can pronounce them. It's a running gag that people always mispronounce her name.

She stole a ship and renamed it after a minor planet in Chiss space. She loves this name. To her, it's the coolest name in the world: the Thearterra Howling. Only problem is, no one else will even attempt to pronounce that. If anything, they just call it the Howling , which drives her nuts.

Those lousy uncultured aliens in Imperial space just don't know how to appreciate a good name.

My AoR group captured a Gozanti Cruiser, which the wookiee proudly named the Wookiee Star. It's growing on us.

When I ran EotE for the first name, I misheard a player suggest the "Silver Arrow" as a name for their YT-1300. I misheard it as "Sombrero" and the other player immediately said, "Yup! We're the Sombrero now"

Seeing as I was usimg the bright orange Krayt Fang picture, I had to agree that it kinda looked like a sombrero

The Empire-evading Force sensitives in my F&D campaign opted for a Holocron as a starting resource, so they're currently hitching a ride with a group of smugglers who have named their ship "Cresting Scum". Because they like to ride the waves of fortune and always come out on top...

Running a short adventure as the opening to a campaign. They are getting a pretty heavily modified g9-rigger, prenamed the idioit's array

Our EotE group is currently tooling around in a YT-1300 called the "Reckless Abandon"

My Players:

Jedi Light Defender - Emerald Sword

Theire asteroidbase - Prime One

theire shuttle - Hopper Prime

In a rare game when I was a player

Groupship - YT-2400 - Bright Eagle

My own Modified X-Wing - Zephire Star

on a Halloween Empireal Oneshot

an YT-1300 the Broken Falcon - We adducted it from a jawa yunkyard... the name fitteted...

Not Star Wars, but I once had some players who named their 2300 AD ship the FS* Poopnut. True story. I recall trying to convince them otherwise, but failed. It was a beer & dice group.

*FS for French Ship. It flew under a French flag on the French Arm of space.

My group keeps naming their ship in Earth Languages. And ridculously long. Russian, latin, and others have been the names. Their current ship was called Blood Money, and was pretty cool, but no, they HAD to change it to Kosnicheskiy Korabl.

*sigh*

We sail across the stars in the "SS Nancy" :(

Our YZ-755 with hanger was called the Honey Badger. No matter how big it was, we were going to bite them!

Well, that was the theory. People in our squad had an aversion to using ANY fighters aside from my PC despite everyone having respectable or good agility scores. So it never worked like that.

My players named their Cidatel "THE CHOPP'AR!" Spelled out just like that. Just so they could all pretend to be Dutch when things go bad.

Does it at least have a very slow hyperdrive? Or its Speed 1?

Remind them that SS means "Single Screw" for one propeller. I supposed it could be argued that SS means "Surface Ship", but then again they have a problem. If they want an in-universe designator perhaps something like FR or TR for Freighter or Transport, etc.

I’m going to Google that no matter what, but I do have to wonder what is their translation of “Kosnicheskiy Korabl”?

Did they mean this book: https://www.amazon.com/Kosmicheskiy-korabl/dp/5402008256 ?
