Any gear owned by the character has an appropriately sized hidden compartment capable of holding gear up to the encumbrance in Ranks of Hidden Storage. Droids could have a compartment capable holding a one-handed weapon, a Silhouette 4 starship could conceal humanoids within it's compartments.
But using listed gear encumbrance the PC would never get a high enough rank (not only would such an ability be way overcosted it's not currently even possible to buy that many ranks) to store a blaster rilfe (enc 6) much less a humanoid being.
So, am I missing something?
The Smugger: Scoundrel has 2 instances of Hidden Storage in it's Spec tree - presumably to replicate Han having hidden storage compartments in the Falcon - but using the RAW the talents - if Han had both of them - would be able to store a single heavy blaster pistol and not a farm boy, a crazy man from the desert, his loyal co-pilot and himself.

Did you apply the “multiply by ten” rule when working with vehicles?

Instead of multiply by 10, I would multiply by the square of the Sil.
Thus 1 rank of Hidden storage =
Incidental enc. for a Sil 0 droid
1 enc. for a Sil 1 droid
4 enc. for a Sil 2 droid or vehicle (speeder bike)
9 enc. for a Sil 3 vehicle (fighters, small freighters)
16 enc. for a Sil 4 vehicle (most freighters)
25 enc. for a Sil 5 vehicle (big freighters)
etc.

I was thinking of something like that for a house rule.
The talent specifically notes that the storage space is proportional to the size of what you're hiding things in. It doesn't give a RAW rate of conversion, but it does allow for a light freighter to hide people.
That said, two ranks of Hidden Storage is enough to hide a couple of grenades, or a set of slicer gear, or a long range comlink, or a disguise kit, or even a jetpack. Two encumbrance can give you one heck of an ace in the hole if you use it properly.
It's worth pointing out that one of the vehicle mods available is Smuggling Compartments. I think Hidden Storage is for small personal items hidden within the characters quarters on the ship, each occupant of the ship can have their own Hidden Storage, it's nothing to do with the actual size of the ship.

This was my thought as well.
I don't think the statement about proportional size was meant to indicate that you could store bigger things with a given number of ranks just because you apply those ranks to a larger object. I think they just meant that more ranks can be applied towards larger objects (for example; if you have enough ranks to hide a person, you could apply that to your ship but not to your astromech droid).
As for emulating the smuggling compartments seen in ANH, I agree that that's the sort of thing which Smuggling Compartments were intended for.
